Definitions
- the invention relates to a Process for carrying out electrochemical reactions, wherein one or more chemical reactants in fluid form into one Microreactor for electrochemical reactions, which at least two plane-parallel arranged Having electrodes, characterized in that at least one electrode with a defined designed, firmly connected to the electrode surface Insulation layer is provided.
- Electrochemical reactors or cells in which the electrolyte between the Surfaces of two opposing electrodes flows are for use with organic syntheses in solutions with low electrolytic conductivity known.
- This capillary gap cell has the following disadvantages: Due to the radial fluid guidance, the flow rate inside is different to outside. This results in transverse diffusion, a less favorable residence time distribution and thus deteriorated selectivity. In addition, large-area spacers cause a loss of effective electrode surface, resulting in a less favorable ratio of effective electrode surface area to cell volume. Furthermore, the large electrode spacing has the consequence that either a lot of conductive salt must be added or a high ohmic resistance must be overcome. This results in high ohmic energy loss and low current efficiency. In addition, no direct heat transfer in the electrochemical cell is possible, ie where a heat supply and removal is needed.
- German patent application DE 25 02 840 and the International Patent application WO 00/15872 suggest electrochemical cells in which between plane-parallel electrodes by non-conductive spacers, in particular films, columns or channels are formed, in which the electrochemical conversion should take place:
- the invention is based on the object, a method for to create electrochemical reactions in a microreactor system.
- microreactor used in the process according to the invention should have high selectivity and at the same time high achieve more effective electrode surface, with a higher metabolic rate maintained at constant current density. This can be higher in operation Yields, less unwanted by-products and thus less effort for their separation and disposal can be achieved.
- the reactor should only be used because of its use to produce less elements and easier processing simply and inexpensively be and as small as possible, but exactly defined and constant Have electrode spacing.
- a microreactor For carrying out electrochemical reactions with the aid of A microreactor according to the invention is used defined composite of electrode surface and coating at the same time as a spacer between the electrodes, for the exact Definition of a reaction space and as an insulator between the electrodes.
- reaction spaces for electrochemical reactions are formed, with regard to the electrochemical process to be performed can be put together properly and connected to each other.
- functional units With few different functional units can be microreactors be assembled, which meet a variety of requirements. Should for example, the output amount to be increased, so can several identical functional units are stacked so that a plurality of parallel Reaction spaces with only one supply or discharge arises. Should, however, a prolonged reaction time can be achieved, so can identical functional units be combined as well; that a series of: identical reaction spaces arises.
- the modular design allows a very flexible structure and thus the simple adaptation to the conditions occurring also changing nature in that individual elements of the microreactor are interchangeable, to meet the requirements of the chosen reaction or if the Do not stop the expected results or if defects occur.
- microreactor The dimensions and shape of the microreactor according to the invention are on not critical. By definition, in the case of an electrochemical microreactor the distance between anode and cathode is less than 1 mm.
- the heat exchanger structures may optionally be in the backs of the plates be incorporated on the front of which structures for the leadership of the Reaction medium are incorporated. In this case can be on a structuring the adjoining plate can be dispensed with. Due to the small electrode distances and the correspondingly high surface area to volume ratio a fast heat transfer and thus avoiding the occurrence of strong Temperature differences in the reaction solution allows.
- the use of Sensors for temperature measurement for exact control of the reaction temperature is planned.
- the temperature of the reaction cell is in the range of -80 up to +300 ° C possible.
- cathode materials lead, lead alloys, cadmium, cadmium alloys, mercury alloys, graphite, glassy carbon, stainless steel, platinum can be used.
- Suitable anode materials are platinum, graphite, glassy carbon, nickel hydroperoxide, lead dioxide, ruthenium oxide / titanium.
- On the electrodes can be deposited by electrodeposition very controlled thin layers of metals and metal alloys. By this deposition, the surface of the anode and cathode, independently of each other, can be modified very controlled with different materials. Since only the electrode surface which directly contacts the fluid phase is determinate for the conditions of an electrochemical reaction, the entire reactor can be adapted to different reaction requirements. The layer thickness of the deposited metal film is directly proportional to the current density per unit time. One can also regulate the electrode spacing in this way. The layers can be removed as needed.
- the installation of sensors, regulators and utilities in provided the microreactor in particular for detection and control of Temperature, the pressure, optionally the flow velocity, the Cell voltage, charge transfer and volume flow.
- the housing faces corresponding bushings for these sensors. If possible, be these sensors are arranged outside the microreactor system. Partially but sensors in the function modules unavoidable.
- the sensors are with Connected control circuits to control the operation and regulate.
- the appropriate logic can be attached to the housing or outside the Housing are located.

- the insulating coating also acts as an insulator between the anode and cathode, thus preventing short circuits. It also provides the sealing of the reaction space.
- the insulating coating on the electrode surface can be positioned in the reaction space supports of any shape. Due to the shape of these supports, e.g. circular, streamline, diamond, cuboid, box, rod-shaped, angular or oval, can additionally the flow distribution in Reaction space can be favorably influenced. This creates laminar Flows that ensure a narrow residence time distribution.
- the supply duct (4) and the Collection channel (4 ') provided with the insulating coating (8) This will prevents in the supply area (supply and discharge openings and distribution or collecting device) a reaction takes place. Unwanted phenomena such as an energy loss or an inhomogeneous current density distribution and Accordingly, the emergence of unwanted by-products thereby avoided.

- the supports (6) on the electrode consist of a coating material which is generally different from the electrode material.
- the heat exchanger (12) can supplement the structure described in Fig.
- 1a in two ways: it can be mounted below the working electrode or on the unstructured counter electrode, then with the structured side down. Also, on both sides of the electrodes, so above and below, heat exchangers are attached.
- the decision as to which structure is more favorable may be a function of the thermal conductivity of the respective electrode materials used and / or the heat of reaction of the electrochemical reaction to be carried out. In any case, the entire area of the reaction zone is covered by the heat exchanger.
- Fig. 2b is a side view of the reactor (21), consisting of a provided with an insulating coating (8) Working electrode (2), a counter electrode (3) and a heat exchanger (12), shows.
