Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a carpet-integrated foot cushion as a passive restraint component in a vehicle as a device for reducing the risk of injury to the foot and leg area of a person sitting on a seat arranged in the interior of a vehicle in the event of an accident-related deformation of the footwell according to German Patent 196 39 467 .
  • a gas bag of an associated airbag module is arranged in the footwell, into which gas is suddenly introduced by a gas generator upon a trigger signal, whereupon the gas bag briefly fills the footwell in question to a predetermined extent, so as to provide a cushioning cushion for to form the foot area before the bulkhead intrudes into the vehicle interior.
  • vehicles of a newer type have a floor covering in the footwell that is at least expanded by acoustic damping measures compared to previous floor coverings.
  • modern Floor coverings on an acoustic damping layer which is covered with the actual carpet layer.
  • the footwell is lined with a floor covering which consists of an acoustically damping layer and a carpet lying thereon.
  • the foot cushion is formed in the footwell between the acoustically damping layer and the carpet of the floor covering, the gas from the gas generator being conducted into the space between the acoustically damping layer and the carpet and the carpet in the area of the foot cushion which is being formed is only partially attached to the acoustic damping layer.
  • a discreet gas bag is no longer used, but the multilayered structure of modern floor coverings is used to briefly form a foot cushion between the floor covering layers.
  • the multiple layers of modern floor coverings therefore make it possible to dispense with the integration of a conventional gas bag.
  • the solution according to the invention enables the inflatable foot cushion to be integrated into the production process from the outset, even if the production process is modified. This could reduce the cost of the foot pad be kept extremely low, which can lead to widespread market acceptance.
  • venting permeability of the foot cushion which allows the gas to escape from the foot cushion after inflation, is given by the gas permeability of the acoustically damping layer and the carpet, that is to say of the entire floor covering.
  • the carpet in the area of the foot cushion to be trained as a result of the accident is only fixed at predetermined tears or breaks on the acoustically damping layer of the floor covering. If the gas generator is not activated, fixing the carpet to the said tear or break points ensures that the carpet does not wrinkle.
  • these tears or breaks after activation of the gas generator allow the foot cushion to be suddenly inflated to full size within a few milliseconds, in which case the carpet is no longer attached to the acoustic-damping layer in that the underside of the carpet is removed from the fixing points tears off. A predictable design of the foot pad is guaranteed.

  • the gas generator is a two-stage gas generator.
  • Two separate pressure lines could be connected to this, one of which conducts gas into the foot cushion according to the invention.
  • the other pressure line could advantageously be connected, for example, to a frontal airbag.
  • both the foot cushion and a frontal airbag would be inflated. This reduces the amount of material required, such as that of several generators, to a minimum.
  • the chronological order for example It can also be used to control how many milliseconds the foot cushion should be inflated earlier than a frontal airbag.
  • the gas generator is a single-stage gas generator, to which, however, several pressure lines are connected, the ratio of their flow-related diameters having a significant influence on the temporal inflation behavior of the connected gas bag and the foot cushion.

  • Figure 3 shows the device directly after ignition of the gas generator.
  • FIG 1 clearly shows the schematic structure of the device.
  • the floor covering 19 in the footwell of the vehicle nowadays consists of an acoustically insulating layer 22 to which a carpet layer 23 is applied.
  • the hatched areas of the acoustically insulating layer 22, which are in a fixing connection with the carpet 23, are shown hatched. Those places of the layer 22 where the carpet 23 is not are brightly colored. It can be seen that in the light spots there are some tears or breaks 21 at which the carpet 23 is fixed when the system is at rest. This allows the carpet 23 not to wrinkle when the system is at rest.
  • a gas pressure line 25 is guided through the layer 22 and is connected to a gas generator 20.
  • FIG. 2 shows the system in the idle state, in which the floor covering 19 is assembled from the acoustically damping layer 22 and the carpet 23 thereon, preferably fixed as explained with reference to FIG. 1.
  • the gas generator 20 is in the idle state.
  • the gas generator 20 is ignited, as indicated in FIG. 3. Then gas is suddenly passed through the pressure line 25 into the prepared foot pad 24, which leads to bulging of the carpet 23 on the layer 22.
  • the foot cushion is not realized by a separate, discrete gas bag, but rather by introducing the gas from the gas generator 20 between the layers 22 and 23 of the floor covering 19, which is generally present anyway, in the vehicle. After the foot cushion 24 has been inflated, the gas escapes through the gas-permeable floor covering 19, so that the foot cushion 24 can perform its damping function.
