De façon connue, le récipient à volume variable peut être un récipient rigide contenant un piston suiveur qui remonte vers la pompe au fur et à mesure de la distribution, comme décrit dans le document EP 0 380 183, ou un récipient à paroi déformable en matière plastique souple, ou pliée en forme d'accordéon. La pompe est généralement fixée par sertissage du corps de pompe sur une coupelle de sertissage ou un plateau ; la pompe comporte une tige émergente creuse, qui permet à la fois d'actionner la pompe et de faire sortir le produit. On actionne la pompe à l'aide d'une tête de distribution en enfonçant la tige émergente, la tête de distribution contenant des canaux de distribution s'ouvrant vers l'extérieur.
