  1. Method for prevention of tampering with an odometer or a tachograph of a motor vehicle, having the following steps:
    - on shutting down the engine of the motor vehicle, detection of the current odometer reading and storage of this odometer reading in a vehicle-internal control unit, in particular an engine control unit,
    - on restarting the engine, detection of the current odometer reading of the odometer,
    - comparison of the odometer reading detected at the restarting of the engine with the stored odometer reading,
    - initiating suitable measures for the event of the odometer reading which is detected at the restarting of the engine and the stored odometer reading not corresponding, and
    - prevention of the engine function of the motor vehicle when the odometer readings do not correspond.
  2. Method according to Claim 1, characterized in that when the odometer readings do not correspond an alarm signal is output.
  3. Device for prevention of tampering with an odometer or a tachograph of a motor vehicle, in particular for carrying out the method according to one of Claims 1 to 2, characterized by
    - means for detecting the current odometer reading when the engine is shut down and for storing the odometer reading in a memory unit of a control unit, in particular of an engine control unit,
    - means for detecting the current odometer reading of the odometer at restarting of the engine,
    - means for comparing the odometer reading at restarting of the engine with the stored odometer reading, and
    - means for preventing the engine function of the motor vehicle in the event of the odometer reading which is detected at restarting of the engine and the stored odometer reading not corresponding.
  4. Device according to Claim 3, characterized in that the means for detecting the current odometer reading and/or means for comparing the odometer reading at restarting of the engine with the stored odometer reading are implemented in the form of a combination instrument 1, and/or the means for preventing the engine function are implemented in the form of a gearbox control unit or engine control unit.
