Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for printing a sign on a predetermined location on a face of a flat object having a thickness within a given range.
- the invention aims to provide such a device having good performance in terms of print quality.
- a device for printing a sign on a predetermined location on one side of a flat object having a thickness within a given range comprising a stop element for the print side of the flat object, drive means for moving the object along the stop element with its printing face which is flush with this element, and printing means comprising means for depositing said sign on said predetermined location while the object is moved by the drive means along the stop element
- said means drive comprising a non-suspended support means for the printing face of said object and comprising a belt having a strand facing said support means and extending between an upstream roller and a downstream roller suspended so that said object can be sandwiched between said unsprung support means and said strand of the belt; characterized in that said belt is wound around at least two other rollers, at least one of which is not suspended.
- At least one of the rollers around which said belt is wound is rotated.
- the belt is thus set in motion by one of the rollers around which it is wound, which is favorable to the constancy of its speed and therefore to the regularity of the impression of the sign.
- the regularity of the speed is better than in the device described by the abovementioned patent application, in which the belt is driven by external counter-rollers on which the upstream roller and the downstream roller are supported respectively, the conditions contact between the belt and these rollers being modified during the movements of suspension of the upstream and downstream rollers.
- the device according to the invention comprises an arm carrying the journal of one of said upstream rollers and downstream roller while said arm is mounted to oscillate on the journal of said other unsprung roller.
- said arm extends, from said journal on which it is mounted to oscillate, downstream.
- each of said two other rollers is unsprung and each of said upstream roller and downstream roller is carried by a respective arm mounted to oscillate on the trunnion of a respective one of said two other pebbles
- said belt is wound around three said other rollers, respectively a first unsprung roller, a second unsprung roller and a third suspended roller.
- This third other roller makes it possible to obtain a particularly regularity. good belt speed
- said third suspended roller is suspended depending on one of said upstream rollers and downstream roller, so that if the latter has a suspension movement such as to relax said belt, the suspension movement of the third roller is such as to tighten said belt
- said third roller is suspended depending on said downstream roller
- the device according to the invention comprises an arm mounted to oscillate in its center on the trunnion of said other non-suspended roller, said arm carrying at one end the trunnion of one of said upstream roller and downstream roller, while at the other end it carries the trunnion of a second said other roller
- said unsprung support means is formed by the strand of a second belt extending between two unsprung rollers, positioned in a predetermined manner with respect to said stop element. Thanks to these characteristics, excellent printing results can be obtained, in particular if the two belts are driven at the same speed synchronously.
- - Said stop element is disposed between said support means and a lateral stop means for said object to be franked; and / or - said printing means comprise at least one ink jet cartridge provided with a head for sending, from a hollow of the stop element, ink onto said predetermined location of the object.
- the invention also relates, in a second aspect, to a franking machine comprising a device as set out above, for printing a franking mark.
- FIG. 1 is a very schematic perspective view of a device according to the invention, part of a franking machine, a letter being shown during passage in this machine;
- - Figure 2 is a top view of this device where, for clarity of the drawing, only certain elements of it have been shown, a letter to be franked being shown during introduction into the machine;
- FIG. 3 is an elevational section taken as indicated by III-III in Figure 2, the letter to be franked being passed through the machine with a portion at the printing means;
- FIGS 4 and 5 are elevational views of the device, respectively with a letter being introduced and a letter being passed, as in Figures 2 and 1; and - Figure 6 is a view similar to Figures 5, but showing the letter being passed through the machine just behind a postage label.
- the franking machine 1 illustrated in the drawing includes a device for printing a franking mark on a flat object such as the letter 2, at the standardized location 3 (FIG. 2) located on the side where one can read the address of the recipient, here the upper side 4 of the envelope that contains the letter 2.
- the letter 2 must be passed through a corridor 5 that comprises the machine 1, this corridor being delimited by elements integral with the frame, respectively a support 6 which forms the ceiling of the corridor 5, a table 7 which forms the floor thereof and a ledge 8 which forms a lateral limit thereof, the corridor being open opposite the ledge 8.
- the letter is placed on the part of the table 7 which projects from the side provided for the introduction (side which we see on the left in the drawings), until whatever it is driven by the means provided for this purpose in the machine 1, the printing of the franking mark takes place automatically while the letter 2 is driven in the corridor 5, the franked letter being expelled from the machine the other end of lane 5 (end which can be seen on the right in the drawings).
- the machine 1 has an upper belt 9 and a lower belt 10 for sandwiching them, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 5.
- the upper belt 9 rotates around six rollers 11 to 16 rotatably mounted on the frame of the machine, without being suspended with respect thereto, the rollers 11 and 16 delimiting the ends, respectively upstream and downstream, of the loop that forms the belt 9, the lower portion of this loop being located in the corridor 5 and resting on the rollers 13 and 14, which are small, the upper portion of this loop being located above the support 6 and meeting the rollers 12 and 15 which deflect the belt 9 to make it circulate near the support 6, the position of the roller 15 being adjustable by means of a pressure screw (not shown) in order to give the belt 9 the tension required to avoid its sliding relative to the roller 16, which is used to drive it in rotation, the roller 16 itself being driven by the motor 17, as will be explained below.
- the lower belt 10 rotates around five rollers 18 to 22 among which the rollers 18 and 21 are rotatably mounted on the frame of the machine 1 without being suspended relative thereto, while the rollers 19, 20 and 22 are suspended, the rollers 18 and 22 delimiting the ends, respectively upstream and downstream, of the loop formed by the belt 10, the upper portion of this loop being located in the corridor 5 where it rests on the rollers 18, 19 and 22 while the lower portion of this loop is located below the table 7 where it meets, between the rollers 22 and 18, the rollers 21 and 20, the roller 21 serving to drive the belt 10 in rotation, and being itself driven, as will be explained below, thanks to the motor 17.
- roller 19 To allow the roller 19 to have a suspension movement, its central journal is carried by an arm 23 mounted to oscillate on the journal of the roller 18, so that the journal of the roller 19 can describe a trajectory in an arc of a circle relative in the journal of the roller 18, a spring 24 being provided for urging the arm 23 upwards, that is to say in the direction which urges the roller 19 towards the strand of the upper belt 9 located in the corridor 5.
- a spring 24 being provided for urging the arm 23 upwards, that is to say in the direction which urges the roller 19 towards the strand of the upper belt 9 located in the corridor 5.
- the roller 18 is arranged just below the roller 11, away from the latter, and that the relative arrangement of the rollers 13 and 19 is such that the roller 13 serves as a counter-roller to the roller 19, in providing it with a support taking up the forces exerted by the spring 24.
- the journal of each of these rollers is mounted at a respective end of an arm 25 whose center is mounted to oscillate on the pin of the roller 21, the path followed by the pin of the rollers 20 and 22 during a suspension movement thus being an arc of a circle centered on the pin of the roller 21, the movements of the rollers 20 and 22 being in opposition, that is to say that when the roller 22 lowers, the roller 20 rises and vice versa.
- a spring 26 is provided for urging the arm 25 in the direction in which the roller 22 rises, that is to say in the direction in which it meets the strand of the upper belt 9 located in the passage 5 It will be observed that the roller 16 serves as a counter-roller to the roller 22, that is to say that it allows it to take up the forces exerted by the spring 26.
- the motor 17 serves to drive the rollers 16 and 21 in rotation, which is achieved by means of a belt 27 (not shown in FIG. 4) engaged on the pulley 28 of the motor 17, on the pulley 29 secured to the roller pin 16 and on the pulley 30 secured to the roller pin 21.
- the letter 2 when introduced into the machine 1 as shown in Figures 2 and 4, ends up meeting the belts 9 and 10 between which it can be inserted by lowering the roller 19 against the spring 24, the letter 2 eventually being sandwiched between the belts 9 and 10, as shown in Figure 5, the lowering of the roller 22 allowing the continuation of the progression of the letter 2 and its exit out of the machine 1.
- the upper and lower faces of the letter 2 are thus driven at exactly the same speed, which avoids giving rise to folds or undulations on these surfaces which are detrimental to the quality of the impression of the franking mark produced, of the as explained below, during the passage of the letter 2 in the machine 1.
- the difference in thickness existing between two objects which follow one another for example the franking label 31 and the letter 2 shown in FIG. 6, makes it possible to be sure that each of the objects present in the corridor 5 is firmly sandwiched between the belts 9 and 10, and therefore driven correctly (if there was some dependence between the suspension of the rollers 19 and 22, the thinnest object would have risked not being pinched strongly enough between the belts, and would undergo a different driving force on its lower and upper sides, likely to cause folds and ripples on the surface to be printed).
- the corridor 5 and the drive means of the machine 1 are capable of admitting objects whose maximum thickness corresponds to the spacing between the rollers 11 and 18, and that whatever the thickness of the entrained object, or the disparity in thickness which it may have, its face to be printed will be very precisely pressed against the external surface of the belt 9 at least between the rollers 13 and 14.
- the machine 1 To print the franking mark on location 3, the machine 1 includes printing means 32 mounted directly on the frame of the machine, located transversely between the flange 8 and the belts 9 and 10 and located in the direction longitudinal, between the rollers 13 and 14.
- the printing means 32 comprise an ink jet cartridge 33 provided with a printing head 34 (FIG. 3) passing through an opening of a plate 35 which has a recess 36 from from which the head 34 can send ink onto the object 2, without coming into contact with the latter.
- the hollow 36 is open downstream of the head 21, as seen in FIG. 1.
- the drive means of the object 2 move the latter so that its face to be printed 4 is flush with the plate 35 and that the latter serves as an element stop preventing the face 4 from coming to meet the head 34, the positioning of the face 4 relative to the plate 35 being more precisely provided by the portion of the belt 9 located between the rollers 13 and 14.
- the means of printing 32 are controlled in synchronism with the advancement of the object 2 in the machine 1, there is provided a first presence detector which controls the starting of the motor 17 when an object begins to be introduced into the machine 1 , and a second presence detector which starts the printing process when the object has reached a predetermined location.
- a first presence detector which controls the starting of the motor 17 when an object begins to be introduced into the machine 1
- a second presence detector which starts the printing process when the object has reached a predetermined location.
