Definitions
- Multi-channel drop generators or also dispensing devices serve in particular to fill cavities in microtitration plates with liquid. They usually consist of a pump and a distributor connected to it via a line.
- the solutions known from the prior art pursue the goal of filling cavities with the smallest possible volume differences, that is to say that the same volume is dispensed at all outlets of the distributor at all times.
- different constructive solutions for the distributor were developed.
- the distributor is often constructed as a tube distributor. However, due to its functional principle, this prohibits an exactly even distribution. Outputs whose distance to the inlet of the distributor is shorter than more distant outputs are preferably flowed through. A variant of such a distributor is described in US Pat. No.
- a dispensing device with a further variant of a distributor is known from EP 0 180 591 B1. This basically consists of a horizontal distributor pipe, from which at least two filling pipes first lead upwards and then after a deflection area into a drainage area downwards.
- the filling pipes are connected to each other via a compensating pipe.
- the line between the pump and the distributor pipe should be made of elastic material in order to somewhat compensate for the relatively hard pump shocks and to pull the liquid in the filler pipes back by about 1-2 mm after the completion of each pumping process, which should reliably prevent dripping.
- this dispensing device is not suitable, since a slightly different liquid column height in the drainage areas of the filling pipes after the liquid has been withdrawn to different dispensing volumes at the individual outlets at the next one Dosing can lead.
- the multi-channel drop generator is basically built and operated so that the levy on the one hand without contact and on the other hand via outlets that are crucial for the accuracy of volume delivery completely drained after each delivery become.
- the dosing device 1 consists of a storage vessel 5 and a dosing device 6, which conveys the liquid from the storage vessel 5 via the connection 2 into a distributor 3 at the outlets of which there are outlets 4 which enable the droplets to be dispensed.
- the amount of liquid must be precisely adjustable and conveyed with a high level of repeatability. Solenoid valves in connection with a pressure vessel or wobble piston pumps can be used advantageously.
- the strong pulsation of the metering devices 1 generates a pressure pulse which is transmitted via the connection 2 to the distributor 3 and to the outlets 4 and which enables small drops to be dispensed there.
- the connection is a preferably hose-like component of defined elasticity in order to reduce the steepness of the edges of the pressure pulses.
- the distributor 3 is a planar channel system made of cascaded T-pieces with an inlet 12 and a plurality of outlets 13, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, which can be incorporated, for example, in plate material. Such a structure ensures an exactly uniform distribution of the liquid flowing through the outlets, with minimal dead volume, regardless of their fluidic properties. Furthermore, the distributor 3 effects an even distribution of the pressure pulses from the input to the outputs. Due to the large cross-section of the channels of the channel system compared to the outlets 4, the distributor 3 has only a negligible part in the dynamic properties of the multi-channel drop generator.
- FIG. 3 This essentially represents a series resonant circuit with current excitation, which can be described with the differential equations from electrical engineering.
- the metering device 1 is reproduced by the power source 7 with switch 8, the elastic connection by the capacitance 9. The distributor is neglected.
- the outlets are shown as resistors 10 and inertias 11.
- In a quasi-static view of the multi-channel drop generator if drops were slowly added by the metering device 1, 4 drops would form at the outlets, which tear off when the weight of the drop exceeds its surface tension. Thereafter, a so-called meniscus remains at the outlets 4, which leads to inaccuracies. Drops produced in this way have a volume of approx.
- the metering device 1 conveys the volume to be dispensed at a high conveying speed via the connection 2 and the distributor 3 to the outlets 4.
- liquid jets with the diameter of the outlets 4 form.
- the inertia prevents droplets from forming. If the liquid flow is interrupted abruptly, the jet breaks off due to the high kinetic energy before a drop occurs. However, an indefinite amount of liquid remains at the outlets 4 and forms a meniscus. In order not to falsify the result of the following dispensing cycle, this liquid residue must be removed.
- connection 2 which is designed as an elastic element and is capable of performing this function.
- connection 2 At the beginning of a delivery cycle, the connection 2, as its cross section expands, absorbs part of the volume conveyed and in part releases it again in the further course. If the volume flow is interrupted, the inertia of the liquid columns in the outlets 4 causes the volume flow to continue for a short time. The flowing volume is supplied by the elasticity of the connection 2, whereby a negative pressure is created.

Abstract
