Definitions
- the invention relates to a side impact protection device for vehicle occupants, with a curtain-like gas bag which at least partially covers a side window of a vehicle in the inflated state, and at least one fastening device by means of which the gas bag is locked on the vehicle frame.
- curtain-like gas bags extend laterally between the vehicle occupant and the side window of the vehicle as far as below the side window.
- Gas bags of this type are attached to the vehicle frame, more specifically to the A, B or C pillar and to the roof frame, at several points by means of fastening devices, and are tensioned between the fastening devices in the inflated state.
- the invention provides a side impact protection device in which the inflated gas bag, before the vehicle occupant dips into it, is less loaded than is the case with curtain-type gas bags as part of known side impact protection devices. This is achieved in a gas bag of the type mentioned in that the cutting of the gas bag and the location and type of
- Fastening device are matched to one another so that the inflated gas bag introduces essentially no forces into the vehicle frame via the fastening device before the occupant hits it.
- the cut and the arrangement of fastening devices are selected such that the folded gas bag is arranged under the cladding almost without tension along the roof frame. After inflation, the airbag tightens between the fastening devices, as I said. This is recognizable
- the cutting of the gas bag and the arrangement of the fastening device are not designed for the folded state, but for the inflated one. This prevents the gas bag from becoming tense between the fastening devices before the occupant hits it.
- the fastening devices hold the gas bag before the vehicle occupants meet, without any significant force being introduced into the vehicle frame, in the predetermined position. Only when the occupant hits the
- Airbag essential forces are introduced into the vehicle frame via the fastening device.
- the fastening device Depending on the construction of the gas bag and the position and type of the fastening device, it may even be necessary to place the gas bag in the vehicle in a tensioned state so that it does not stretch between the fastening devices in the inflated state.
- the gas bag preferably has gas-carrying areas via which the compressed gas is conducted into the interior of the gas bag. So that the gas flow is not impaired by the attachment of the fastening devices, these are outside of the gas-carrying areas
- Wrinkles should always be avoided on the gas bag, as this affects the gas flow within the gas bag and increases the filling time.
- Seams which connect opposite wall regions of the gas bag to one another preferably run in such a way that at most they lead to little wrinkling. This can be achieved, for example, in that a seam extends up to an outer edge of the gas bag, seen transversely to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, ends there in an arc and delimits an inflatable section which, when the gas bag is inflated, has a rounded edge.
- the gas bag extends from approximately the A to approximately the C pillar of the vehicle.
- FIG. 1 is a side view of the side impact protection device according to the invention with the gas bag attached, spread out but not inflated,
- FIG. 2 shows the protective device according to FIG. 1 with the gas bag fully inflated
- FIG. 3 is a view corresponding to FIG. 1 of a side impact.
- FIG. 4 shows the known side impact protection device shown in FIG. 3 with the gas bag fully inflated.
- FIGS. 3 to 4 For a simple understanding of the invention, the prior art according to FIGS. 3 to 4 is first explained.
- a side impact protection device is shown, which comprises a curtain-like gas bag 1 and fastening devices 3, via which the gas bag 1 is locked on the roof frame 5.
- FIG. 3 are in an inflated state of the gas bag (FIG. 4) or expanded state (FIG. 3), which only serves to illustrate the cut of the gas bag relative to the side wall of the vehicle, approximately upper edge 7 of the gas bag 1 running parallel to the roof frame 5 intended.
- the airbag 1 extends like a curtain from the A-pillar 9 to the C-pillar 11 and completely covers the front and rear side windows and the B-pillar of the vehicle.
- a gas generator which inflates the airbag 1 accommodated below the roof cladding before the restraint is not shown.
- Sections 19, 21 and 23 are separated by seams 13, 15 and 17, which connect opposite wall regions of the gas bag 1 to one another. This, at the front end, in the area of the B-pillar and Sections 19, 21 and 23 provided at the rear end cannot be inflated.
- the four fastening devices 3 would be substantially unloaded in the state shown in FIG. 3, but not occurring in practice, whereas they are loaded after the gas bag 1 has been inflated, since the gas bag 1 changes its shape and one transversely to it
- Fastening devices 3 are very heavily loaded on train, whereas the gas bag 1 presses against the roof frame 5 in the area of the two inner fastening devices 3.
- the tissue stress increases due to this asymmetrical application of force.
- Airbag fabrics that indicate voltage peaks Airbag fabrics that indicate voltage peaks.
- the gas bag 31 is larger than the side wall of the vehicle in the expanded state and would protrude from it.
- the airbag 31 In the assembled state, the airbag 31 extends underneath a covering from the A-pillar 9 along the roof frame 5 to the C-pillar 11.
- the airbag 31 In the expanded but not inflated state, the airbag 31 has an overall end, seen transversely to the direction of travel curved shape with a concave upper and convex lower outer edge.
- the gas bag cut is selected such that the gas bag 31 is optimally adapted to the side wall of the vehicle in the inflated state, as a result of which there are only small distances between the outer edge 33 of the gas bag 31 and the adjacent roof frame 35 and the A and C pillars 37 and
- Side impact protection device is connected to the interior of the gas bag 31 via gas-carrying areas 47.
- the fastening devices 41 are arranged outside the gas-carrying areas 47 in order to Not to influence the gas flow when inflating the gas bag 31 in the case of retention.
- the position and type (e.g. the length of a band serving as a fastening device) of the fastening devices 41 are correspondingly coordinated with one another.
- the fastening devices 41 are thereby only loaded by the weight of the gas bag 31, i.e. in front
- the cut of the gas bag 31 is selected so that its upper edge runs parallel to the roof frame and its lower edge runs horizontally, so that the side windows of the
- the gas bag 31 Similar to the gas bag 1 shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the gas bag 31 also has stitched areas 49, 51 and 53, namely at its front and rear ends and in the area of the B-pillar. In contrast to the seams 13, 15 and 17, however, the corresponding seams 55, 57 and 59 run out in an arc on the outer edge 33 of the gas bag 31.
- the two inflatable sections 61 and 63 of the U which are connected to one another above the U-shaped seam 57 and are thereby formed
- Gas bags 31 thus have rounded edges, on which at most few folds are formed.
- the seams 55, 57, 59 and the airbag fabric are loaded more uniformly and less in the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 than is the case in the airbag 1 shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, as a result of which
- the side impact protection device shown is also to offer protection in the event of a vehicle rollover, it is advantageous if the airbag 1 is also fastened to the A and C pillars. This happens Via straps sewn onto the gas bag in areas 49 and 53 and fastened to the A and C pillars.
