Die Schienenfahrzeughersteller sind daher im Hinblick auf eine gewollte weitere Verringerung des Gewichts bestrebt, für bestimmte Baugruppen Faserverbundwerkstoffe einzusetzen, beispielsweise zur Außenverkleidung von Seitenwänden. Eine Vollnutzung von Faserverbundwerkstoffen wird durch den Preis der Rohstoffe und durch den technischen Aufwand für die Krafteinleitung erschwert.
