  • the body layer protects the sheeting from the environment, and can provide mechanical integrity to the sheeting. It also gives the sheeting the ability to bend, to curl, or to flex.
  • Preferred polymeric materials used in the body layer are flexible and resistant to degradation by ultraviolet (UV) light radiation so that the retroreflective sheeting can be used for long-term outdoor applications.
  • Examples of polymers that may be used to make the body layer include fluorinated polymers; ionomeric ethylene copolymers; low density polyethylenes; plasticized vinyl halide polymers; polyethylene copolymers; and aliphatic and aromatic polyurethanes. Commercially available polyurethanes include: PNO3-214 (from Morton International Inc., Seabrook, New Hampshire) or X-4107 (from B.F. Goodrich Company, Cleveland, Ohio).
  • the microstructured member and sealing member are bonded along bond lines that form a regular array of polygons.
  • a suitable polygon allows the microstructured member to grow in curvature or to flatten as a response to a dimensional change of the traffic control devices.
  • Preferred polygons include parallelograms, such as rectangles or squares.
  • the length of the rectangles can range between approximately 5 and 150 mm (0.2 to 6 in); the width of the rectangles can range from between approximately 5 and 25 mm (0.2 to 1 in).

Claims (6)

  1. Verfahren zum Herstellen eines kissenartigen retroreflektierenden Artikels mit den Schritten:
    (a) Bereitstellen eines mikrostrukturierten retroreflektierenden Teils (11) mit einem Körperabschnitt (14) und mehreren Würfeleckenelementen (12), die von einer ersten Seite (20) des Körperabschnitts (14) vorstehen;
    (b) Bereitstellen eines Dichtungsteils (24);
    (c) Transportieren des mikrostrukturierten Teils (11) und des Dichtungsteils (24) mit im wesentlichen gleicher Geschwindigkeit so, daß das Dichtungsteil (24) relativ zum mikrostrukturierten Teil (11) im wesentlichen spannungslos ist, und so, daß die Würfeleckenelemente (12) zum Dichtungsteil (24) weisen; und
    (d) gegenseitiges Verbinden der ersten Seite (20) des Körperabschnitts (14) und des Dichtungsteils (24) in einem regelmäßigen Muster, um abgedichtete Zellen (17) zu bilden, die jeweils ein gewölbtes mikrostrukturiertes Teil (11) haben.
  2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, wobei der Schritt (d) Wärmeverbinden aufweist.
  3. Retroreflektierende Lage (10) mit:
    (a) einem mikrostrukturierten retroreflektierenden Teil (11) mit einem Körperabschnitt (14) und mehreren Würfeleckenelementen (12), die von einer ersten Seite (20) des Körperabschnitts (14) vorstehen;
    (b) einem Dichtungsteil (24); und
    (c) einem Netz aus sich schneidenden Linien (30), die die erste Seite (20) des Körperabschnitts (14) und das Dichtungsteil (24) in einem regelmäßigen Zellenmuster miteinander verbinden, wobei die retroreflektierende Lage (10) so angepaßt ist, daß es sich um bis zu 3 % mit minimaler Verzerrung der Würfeleckenelemente (12) verlängern kann und daß es zwischen folgendem veränderbar ist:
    (i) einem Normalzustand, in dem das mikrostrukturierte Teil (11) gewölbt und im wesentlichen parallel zum Dichtungsteil (24) ist; und
    (ii) einem komprimierten Zustand, in dem das mikrostrukturierte Teil (11) Bogen bildet und das Dichtungsteil (24) im wesentlichen flach ist.
  4. Lage nach Anspruch 3, wobei die Würfeleckenelemente (12) Polymere aufweisen, die aus der Gruppe ausgewählt sind, die aus Acryl, Polycarbonat, Polyester, Polyurethan und vernetzten Acrylaten besteht.
  5. Retroreflektierende Verkehrsleitvorrichtung (50) mit:
    (a) einer polymeren Vorrichtung; und
    (b) der retroreflektierenden Lage (10) nach Anspruch 3, das mit einer Außenfläche der Vorrichtung so verbunden ist, daß bei Zusammenziehen der polymeren Vorrichtung als Reaktion auf sinkende Umgebungstemperatur das mikrostrukturierte Teil (11) Bogen bildet und daß sich bei Dehnung der polymeren Vorrichtung als Reaktion auf steigende Umgebungstemperatur das mikrostrukturierte Teil (11) abflacht.
  6. Vorrichtung nach Anspruch 5, wobei die polymere Vorrichtung Polymere aufweist, die aus einer Gruppe ausgewählt sind, die aus Polyethylen niedriger Dichte, Polyethylen hoher Dichte, Polypropylen, weichmacherhaltigem Polyvinylchlorid und deren Copolymeren besteht.
