D'une manière classique, une installation de piscine comprend essentiellement un local technique situé à l'extérieur du bassin de la piscine et relié à ce dernier par des canalisations enterrées pour assurer la circulation de l'eau en phase d'aspiration et de refoulement. Ce local technique présente des moyens de pompage et de filtration assujettis à tous moyens de commande connus et appropriés. Les différentes tuyauteries reliées au moyen de pompage et de filtration débouchent au niveau du bassin de la piscine. Certaines de ces tuyauteries sont reliées à des ouvertures équipées de volets articulés et conformées pour permettre la prise de l'eau au niveau de la surface du bassin. Ces ouvertures équipées de volets articulés sont connues sous le nom de skimmer et sont incorporées à la maçonnerie de la piscine.
