Claims (5)

  1. A device for digging vertical trenches in very hard ground and intended to be suspended from hoist means, said device comprising:
    a frame (1) with two pairs of cutting drums (2) mounted at the bottom portion thereof being rotated to break up the ground, and
    a block (7) via which said frame is suspended from said hoist means,
    said device being characterised in that said frame includes a first portion (1b) which is rigid and non-deformable and which presents a substantially vertical longitudinal axis when said device is being used and which portion is connected to said block and a second tool-carrier portion (1a) which is distinct from and mobile relative to said first portion, on which are mounted said pairs of drums, with said second portion projecting beneath said first portion being used and said first portion including a housing opening out downwardly in which said second portion can engage to slide axially therein, said first portion of the frame (1b) is an anchor portion provided with anchor means for anchoring said anchor portion in the trench; and the device further comprises telescopic means (10) suitable for bearing against said anchor means and for exerting thrust on the cutting drums (2) in the direction of said longitudinal axis.
  2. A device according to claim 1, characterised by the fact that it also includes positioning means enabling it to be oriented relative to the trench, with said means being constituted by pads (11) that are mobile relative to the anchor portion (1a) of the frame.
  3. A device according to claim 1 or 2, characterised by the fact that the frame (1) comprises a tool-carrier portion (1a) which supports the cutting drums (2) and their drive motor, and an anchor portion (1b) which supports the anchor means (12) and optionally positioning means (11), with the telescopic means (10) interconnecting the tool-carrier portion (1a) and the anchor portion (1b) of the frame.
  4. A device according to claim 3, characterised by the fact that the tool-carrier portion (1a) is received in a housing (9) of the anchor portion (1b) and can slide axially therein.
  5. A device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, characterised in that said anchor means are mobile pads (12) mounted in the main faces of the anchor portion (1a) of the frame.
