Claims (8)

  1. Process for making a pile in the ground, especially in the seabed, wherein:
    a) the lower end of a tube (15) of predetermined inside diameter and outside diameter and containing, inside it, a drilling machine (1) equipped with cutters (6, 7) movable from a first position, in which their transverse dimension is less than the inside diameter of the tube, into a second position, in which their transverse dimension is greater than the outside diameter of the tube, is brought substantially in contact with the ground,
    b) drilling from top to bottom is carried out to a predetermined depth by means of the cutters in their said first position,
    c) the cutters are placed in their said second position,
    d) further drilling from bottom to top is carried out by means of the cutters in their second position, up to the vicinity of the said lower end of the tube,
    e) the cutters are returned to their said first postion and the machine is retracted into the tube,
    f) the tube is lowered into the hole thus made to the said predetermined depth and, if appropriate, operations b) to e) are recommenced a certain number of times, and
    g) the drilling machine is withdrawn from the tube thus buried in the ground, and the annular space (54) located between the wall of the hole and the outer surface of the tube is cemented.
  2. Process according to Claim 1, characterised in that, before the pile is made, a device (17) capable of retaining the tube and ensuring that it is lowered step by step in the said hole is installed.
  3. Process according to either of Claims 1 and 2, characterised in that a drilling machine of the type comprising a head (3) and a body (2), on which the cutters are mounted, the head and the body being connected by means of a jack (4), is used, in that the said head is suspended on the upper end of the tube at a fixed distance from this end, and in that the above-mentioned operations of drilling and further drilling are carried out at a result of the reaspective extension and retraction of the said jack.
  4. Drilling device for carrying out the process according to any one of Claims 1 to 3, comprising
    a drilling machine (1) contained in a tube (15) comprising at least one pair of cutters driven in rotation in opposite directions, characterised in that, each of the said cutters being mounted on an oscillating support (33), means (33, 34) being provided for moving the said supports between two positions in, which the cutters are respectively in a first position in which their transverse dimension it less than the inside diameter of the tube (15), and in a second position in which their transverse dimension it greater than tile outside diameter of the tube (15), and
    means (23, 24, 25) for retaining and stepwise lowering of the said tube. (sic)
  5. Drilling device according to Claim 4, characterised in that the drilling machine comprises two pairs of superposed cutters ( 6 , 7), the four cutters as a whole having a substantially circular horizontal projection.
  6. Drilling device according to either of Claims 4 and 5 , characterised in that the said cutters are mounted on a support (5) mounted rotatably on the body of the machine about a substantially vertical axis, meant (36) being provided for causing the said support to rotate about the said axis.
  7. Drilling device according to Claim 6, characterised in that the drilling machine possesses especially inflatable pads (38) mounted in longitudinal grooves (39) and capable of bearing on the inner surface of the tube.
  8. Drilling device according to any one of Claims 4 to 7, characterised in that the said means for retaining and stepwise lowering comprise a first clamping collar (23) mounted fixedly relative to the ground and a second clamping collar (24) coaxial relative to the first collar, means (25) being provided for moving the second collar away from and towards the first collar.
