Definitions
- the present invention relates to a method of protecting internal combustion engines.
- Another cause of degradation of the surfaces of the engine is due to the oxidation, sometimes selective, of the constituent metals of the alloys used, this is why another object of the present invention is to provide an additive which makes it possible to reduce the phenomena of oxidation on the surface of parts brought into contact with the combustion gases of a hydrocarbon fuel.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide an additive of the above type which makes it possible to lighten the specifications weighing on the alloys constituting the moving parts of the engines.
- an additive containing at least one Cerium compound for the protection of engines against wear and oxidation which compound is chosen to so that it is soluble or pseudo-soluble in liquid hydrocarbons and introduced into the fuel supplying the internal combustion engine at a concentration so as to form a solution, a sol, a suspension or an emulsion of a compound of Cerium and this at a concentration such that cerium is present in the said fuel at a concentration at least equal to 5, preferably 10 PPM (by mass).
- pseudo-soiuble refers to suspensions or emulsions which, although not constituting solutions in the strict sense of the term, have sufficient stability in hydrocarbons that during the use of a full tank under conditions normal, no significant change in sensation or suspension takes place.
- the concentration of Cerium in the fuel is between 10 and 500, preferably from 50 to 200 parts per million (by mass).
- cerium III salts it is conceivable to obtain good protections from solutions of cerium III salts provided that the latter are stable in conventional fuels and in particular conventional gas oils. If one does not master the form in which they are shortly after their introduction into the fuel generally diesel, it is preferable to add the cerium compound at the last moment or in an extemporaneous manner.
- cerium compound When said cerium compound is chosen from cerium IV compounds, it also has the advantage of being accessible at high concentration levels which reduces the size of the reservoir, which is necessary in the event of extemporaneous introduction. Thus it is possible to obtain a concentration of up to 15% in cerium frequently 20%, even 30%.
- Another advantage of tetravalent compounds is greater stability than that of trivalents.
- the good preferred protections are those obtained by combustion of a fuel, or fuel, (containing or not additives, such as diesel) containing at least one cerium IV compound (in the form of a sol or solution) such as for example those described in the European patent application filed in the name of the applicant under N * 83401 152.0.
- the soils obtained by dilution preferably extemporaneous, in a fuel, or fuel of a concentrated soil (at least 15 to 20% of cerium oxide (CeO2)) in a fraction petroleum such as that sold under the brand Solvesso® 150 and stabilized by fatty acids from C15 to C25, preferably linear, such as oleic, linoiic and linolenic or stearic acids, the hydrodynamic size of the particles forming the soil being advantageously between 1 and 20 miilimicron.
- a fuel or fuel of a concentrated soil (at least 15 to 20% of cerium oxide (CeO2)) in a fraction petroleum such as that sold under the brand Solvesso® 150 and stabilized by fatty acids from C15 to C25, preferably linear, such as oleic, linoiic and linolenic or stearic acids, the hydrodynamic size of the particles forming the soil being advantageously between 1 and 20 miilimicron.
- the concentration of cerium in the fuel, and in particular diesel, is advantageously between 10 and 200 ppm, preferably between 50 and 150 ppm.
- This technique of bringing Cerium into contact with the surface to be protected of an alloy can be transposed to other applications than that of engines, it makes it possible in particular to protect any surface brought into contact with a flame formed by a liquid hydrocarbon containing Cerium compounds, which are soluble or pseudo-soluble.
- this protection can be acquired once and for all or renewed from time to time.
- This protection is particularly sensitive and effective when applied to alloys containing a trivatent metal either of the chromium family or of the aluminum family, preferably chromium and aluminum.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a method of protecting motors.
- Cerium is at least equal to 10 P.P.M.
- the duration of the preconditioning of the engine must be such that the quantity of Cerium deemed to have passed through the engine is at least equal to 1, advantageously to 10 grams, preferably to 20 g per liter. displacement.
- the duration of said conditioning can be modulated by varying the concentration of cerium in the fuel of the internal combustion engine.
- concentration of cerium does not exceed 10 grams per liter, preferably 1 g per liter of fuel. If you want to condition the engine using conventional fuel, you must reach at least fifty hours, preferably one hundred hours, but preconditioning is in fact only normal operation during which the protection of the engine by cerium is little or not assured.
- the wear performances were measured by the analysis of metallic traces in the oil used (here iron).
- This test uses an Oldsmobile (1983) 4.3 V6 diesel engine under cyclic conditions for 130 hours.
