  • the present invention relates to a container wherein the volume of the container can be varied so as to reduce the amount of air in the container.
  • Containers are generally of fixed volume. It is usually necessary to have a number of containers of different sizes as it is well known that food will last longer if its contact with air is reduced. Also having containers larger than is necessary sometimes presents a problem, especially when space is at a premium.
  • US Patent No. 4,456,134 discloses various embodiments of containers.

  • the bottom sleeve 3 and upper sleeve 14 have the same diameters, and both have an internal thread.
  • the height of the bottom sleeve 3 and upper sleeve 14 is substantially one sixth of the height of the container when fully extended.
  • Section 4 is threaded on both sides, so as to interlock with bottom sleeve 3 and centre section 5.
  • a similar section 4' to section 4 fits between centre section 5 and upper sleeve 14. Sections 4 and 4' are substantially one sixth of the container height when fully extended, and centre section 5 is substantially one third of the height of the container when fully extended.
  • the uppermost internal thread 6 in each section of sleeve 3 and 4 and the lower most internal thread 6' of each section 4' and 14 has a different smaller thread contour to the remaining thread.
  • the lower most external thread 7 in each section 4 and 5 and the uppermost external thread 7' in each section 4' and 5 has greater thread contours. The combination of these contours prevents the threaded sections 3, 4, 4', 5 and 14 from separating because of frictional engagement therebetween.
  • the threaded sections and sleeves 3, 4, 4', 5 and 14 can be screwed downwards to one third of the container's full height.
  • the threaded sections 3, 4, 4', 5 and 14 are screwed upwards, the full container height is achieved and the sizes of threads 6 and 7 prevent the sections and sleeves 3, 4, 4', 5 and 14 coming apart.
  • cap 9 At the top of upper sleeve 14, there is an external threaded opening 15, onto which a cap 9 fits.
  • the cap 9 includes a threaded skirt 8, skirt 13 and float 11.
  • the threaded skirt 8 interlocks with threaded opening 15.

  • the sections and sleeves 3, 4, 4', 5 and 14 are screwed down to reduce the volume of the container 10, air can escape from the container 10 by way of passage 12 between threaded skirt 8 and skirt 13.
  • the lowering of cap 9 causes float 11 to come into contact with and float on any liquids or other flowable material in the member 1.
  • This gradual rising of float 11, and consequentially skirt 13, causes passage 12 to be blocked and the container 10 to be sealed. Any further internal pressure, either from further reducing the internal volume or gases escaping from the liquid, will increase the sealing effect of the cap 9.
  • Figure 3 shows another embodiment of the invention, wherein the volume of the container is varied by means of a ratchet and pawl mechanism.
  • the upper sleeve 14 has two sets of externally projecting teeth 16. It is to be appreciated that more than two sets may be provided.
  • a pawl handle 17 is provided on the lower sleeve 3. To decrease the volume of the container, the upper sleeve is pushed downwards towards the lower sleeve. The pawl inner end of the pawl handle 17 locks in the teeth 16 to maintain a particular volume for the container. Movement of the handle 17 can release the ratchet mechanism, in order for the volume of the containers to be increased. Alternatively, rotation of the upper and lower sleeve 14, 3 may be used to release the ratchet, so as to increase the volume of the container.
  • Figure 4 shows yet another embodiment of the invention, wherein the volume of the container is varied by means of multi-level bayonet type connections.
  • the connection in the example has the lower sleeve 3 with two sets of shaped grooves, each set comprising a plurality of transverse grooves 19 connected by a longitudinal groove 20.
  • Upper sleeve 14 has a pin member 21 which fits into grooves 19, 20. By moving (Twisting and pushing/pulling) the upper sleeve 14 relative to lower sleeve 3, or vice versa, the member 21 can move between transverse grooves 19 by means of the longitudinal groove, and hence vary the volume of the container.

Claims (22)

  1. Behälter (10) mit veränderlichem Volumen mit einem inneren flexiblen Teil (1), welches in einer Anzahl von gegenseitig verriegelten äußeren Hülsen (3, 4, 4', 5, 14) eingeschlossen ist, wobei das Volumen des inneren flexiblen Teils (1) dadurch verändert werden kann, daß mindestens eine äußere Hülse relativ zu einer anderen äußeren Hülse bewegt wird, und wobei benachbarte äußere Hülsen unseparierbar sind oder nur durch das Lösen eines Verriegelungsmechanismus (6, 6', 7, 7'; 16, 17; 20) separierbar sind, wobei der Verriegelungsmechanismus derart ausgebildet ist, daß er das Auseinanderziehen oder Zusammenschieben des Behälters erlaubt, während er mit dem Behälter ein Ganzes bleibt.
  2. Behälter nach Anspruch 1, wobei die Hülsen (3, 4, 4', 5, 14) ineinanderschiebbare Hülsen sind.
  3. Behälter nach Anspruch 1 oder Anspruch 2, mit einer oberen äußeren Hülse (14) und einer unteren äußeren Hülse (3).
  4. Behälter nach Anspruch 3, wobei die obere äußere Hülse (14) eine mit Außengewinde versehene Öffnung (15) hat.
  5. Behälter nach Anspruch 3 oder 4, wobei das innere flexible Teil (1) an der Basis der unteren äußeren Hülse (3) befestigt (2) ist.
  6. Behälter nach einem vorhergehenden Anspruch, wobei das innere flexible Teil (1) an der oberen äußeren Hülse (14) permanent befestigt ist.
  7. Behälter nach Anspruch 4 oder 5, wobei eine Lippe des inneren flexiblen Teils (1) durch die mit Außengewinde versehene Öffnung (15) vorsteht, um zwischen dem inneren flexiblen Teil (1) und einer Kappe (9) eine Dichtung vorzusehen.
  8. Behälter nach einem vorhergehenden Anspruch, wobei die äußeren Hülsen (3, 4, 4', 5, 14) zusammengeschraubt sind.
  9. Behälter nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, wobei die äußeren Hülsen (3, 14) sich mittels einer Ratsche (16, 17) relativ zueinander bewegen.
  10. Behälter nach Anspruch 9, wobei die obere Hülse (14) mindestens zwei Gruppen von nach außen ragenden Zähnen (16) aufweist.
  11. Behälter nach Anspruch 10, wobei ein Klinkenhandgriff (17) für jede Folge von nach außen vorstehenden Zähnen (16) auf der unteren Hülse vorgesehen ist.
  12. Behälter nach Anspruch 11, wobei die Bewegung des Handgriffes (17) zwischen den Zähnen (16) die Ratschenverbindung zu lösen und folglich das Volumen des Behälters zu vergrößern veranlaßt.
  13. Behälter nach einem der Ansprüche 10 bis 12, wobei die Drehung der oberen (14) und unteren Hülsen (3) eine Veränderung des Behältervolumens ermöglicht.
  14. Behälter nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, wobei sich die äußeren Hülsen (3, 14) mittels einer Bajonettverbindung mit Mehrfach-Höhenlage (19, 20, 21) relativ zueinander bewegen.
  15. Behälter nach Anspruch 14, wobei die Bajonettverbindung (19, 20, 21) entweder in der unteren (3) oder der oberen Hülse (14) mit mindestens zwei Gruppen von geformten Nuten gebildet ist, wobei jede Gruppe eine Vielzahl von Quernuten (19) aufweist, welche durch eine Längsnut (20) verbunden sind.
  16. Behälter nach Anspruch 15, wobei mindestens zwei Stiftteile (21) sich entweder von der unteren (3) oder der oberen Hülse (14) erstrecken und jedes Stiftteil (21) in eine Gruppe geformter Nuten (20) in der anderen Hülse paßt.
  17. Behälter nach Anspruch 16, wobei die Drehung der oberen und unteren Hülse (3, 14) die Bewegung des Stiftteils (21) in einer Dreh- oder Stoß-/Zugtätigkeit zwischen den Quernuten (19) mittels der Längsnut (20) und folglich die Veränderung des Behältervolumens (10) veranlaßt.
  18. Behälter nach einem vorhergehenden Anspruch, wobei der Behälter mittels einer Kappe (9) abgedichtet ist.
  19. Behälter nach Anspruch 18, wobei die Kappe (9) einen Verschluß (8) und einen Rand (13) aufweist.
  20. Behälter nach Anspruch 19, wobei der Rand (13) einen Schwimmer (11) und einen Tastenabschnitt (16) hat.
  21. Behälter nach Anspruch 20, wobei bei Verringerung des Volumens des Behälters (10) Luft durch einen Durchgang (12) zwischen einer Außenkante des Randes (13) und einer inneren Oberfläche des Verschlusses (8) entweicht.
  22. Behälter nach Anspruch 21, wobei dann, wenn ein fließfähiges Material den Schwimmer (11) erreicht, der Schwimmer (11) sich hebt und allmählich den Durchgang (12) zwischen der äußeren Kante des Randes (13) und der inneren Oberfläche des Verschlusses (8) verschließt.
