Abstract

The connector has metallic contact rods (1) with right-angle bends which are embedded in electrical insulation (2) which is screened (3) by superimposed metallic blocks (4a,4b) with right-angled channels (5a-5c,6a-6c) in their contiguous plane faces. The channels are shaped so that the screening is broken in regions (7a,7b) where the insulation is contacted, without creating any empty space therein. The screening surrounds the insulation completely in a straight part of each bend formed by the channels. Portions (9a,9b,10a,10b) between two contact rods are separated by a cavity ((12a,12b) extending throughout their length and open at both ends.

Description

The present invention relates to a shielded, miniature connector, with angled contact rods and electrically insulated with respect to the shielding.

The invention also relates to the method for manufacturing the above connector.

This type of connector includes pins projecting from one of its faces, intended to be fixed for example by welding to a printed circuit. On one side located at right angles to the above side, shield sockets protrude coaxially surrounding female contact tips connected to the bent contact rods.

Such connectors must have the smallest possible footprint, their bent contact rods thus being very close to each other, while being perfectly electrically insulated and effectively shielded.

With the exception of DE-B-4 438 872, all the above documents describe connectors in which a perfect continuity of the shielding is achieved between the contact rods.

In the case of DE-B-4 438 872 the shielding is not continuous between the contact rods. However, there are empty spaces between the contact rods which increase the size of the connector.

Furthermore, the connectors illustrated by the above prior art are generally relatively expensive to manufacture.

The object of the present invention is to remedy the drawbacks of known connectors, by creating a compact connector, inexpensive to manufacture and in which the contact rods are perfectly insulated and shielded from one another.

According to the invention this connector is characterized in that the electrically insulating material is overmolded around the contact rods, in that the shielding consists of two superimposed metal blocks comprising on their contacting surfaces bent channels receiving the contact rods surrounded by the electrically insulating material, these channels being shaped so that the shielding is interrupted in a rectilinear part of the elbow formed by the channels, this shielding interruption bringing the insulating material surrounding the contact rods into contact, without creating any empty space in areas where the shielding is interrupted.

Tests have shown that the interruption of shielding between the bent contact rods had no adverse effect on the overall quality of the shielding.

This interruption in shielding and the absence of empty spaces between the contact rods makes it possible to reduce the size of the connector.

In addition, since the shielding is made up of a number of parts reduced to two blocks and the insulating material is overmolded on the contact rods, the manufacture of the connector is both simple and inexpensive.

According to the invention, the method of manufacturing the connector according to the invention comprises the following steps:
  • the contact rods are produced by cutting them out of a metal sheet, this cutting leaving in place connecting spacers between the rods near the ends thereof,
  • an insulating material is molded around the contact rods,
  • the connecting spacer is cut located near one of the ends of the contact rods,
  • the assembly thus obtained is put into place in the channels of one of the shielding blocks,
  • the other shielding block is placed above the shielding block comprising the above assembly, so that its channels cover the insulating material of the contact rods,
  • the shielding sockets are placed in the conduits of one of the blocks and,
  • the other connecting spacer is cut.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear in the description below.

In the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 5, the connector according to the invention comprises a series of metallic contact rods 1, spaced apart and bent, embedded in an electrically insulating material 2 which is itself surrounded by a metallic shield 3.

According to the invention, the electrically insulating material 2 is overmolded around the contact rods 1, the shield 3 consists of two blocks metallic 4a, 4b, superimposed, having on their faces in contact bent channels 5a, 5b, 5c; 6a, 6b, 6c receiving the contact rods 1 surrounded by the electrically insulating material. These channels 5a, 5b, 5c; 6a, 6b, 6c are shaped so that the shielding is interrupted in a rectilinear part 7a, 7b, (see representation in dotted lines in FIG. 1) of the elbow formed by the channels 5a, 5b, 5c; 6a, 6b, 6c.

This interruption of shielding 7a, 7b brings the insulating material 2 surrounding the contact rods 1 into contact without creating any empty space in the area where the shielding is interrupted.

Preferably, the two metal blocks 4a, 4b of the shield 3 are molded.

As shown in Figures 2 to 5, the contacting faces 8a, 8b of the two shielding blocks 4a, 4b are planar.

As shown in Figure 4, each channel 5a, 5b, 5c; 6a, 6b, 6c, formed in one of the blocks 4a, 4b forms with the adjacent channel of the other block, a conduit of circular section which surrounds the insulating material and the contact rods 1.

It can be seen in FIG. 1 that the shield 2 completely surrounds the insulating material 2 in a part of the elbow (that which is horizontal in FIG. 1) formed by the channels 5a, 5b, 5c; 6a, 6b, 6c. Parts 9a, 9b; 10a, 10b of the shielding comprised between two adjacent contact rods surrounded by the insulating material 2, are separated by a recess 12a, 12b.

As shown in Figure 2, the recess 12a, 12b extends over the entire length of the parts 9a, 9b; 10a, 10b of shielding and is open at each of its ends.

Par ailleurs, les creux 12a, 12b comportent chacun un trou 13a, 13b pour le passage d'une vis d'assemblage des deux blocs de blindage 4a, 4b.Furthermore, the recesses 12a, 12b each have a hole 13a, 13b for the passage of a connecting screw of the two shielding blocks 4a, 4b.

In the example shown in Figures 1 to 5, the two shielding blocks 4a, 4b, are substantially parallelepidedic and the channels 5a, 5b, 5c; 6a, 6b, 6c formed therein, open from two adjacent side faces 14, 15 located at right angles to each other.

It can be seen in FIG. 10 that one of the shielding blocks 4a comprises, along one of its lateral faces, a protuberance 16 defining a shoulder 17 perpendicular to the plane P of assembly of the two blocks 4a, 4b. Against this shoulder 17, comes to bear the other block 4b and the channels 5a, 5b, 5c; 6a, 6b, 6c, formed in the blocks 4a, 4b open to the outside of the protuberance 16 by circular conduits 18a, 18b, 18c.

We see, on the other hand, in Figures 2 and 10, that the insulating material 2 molded around the contact rods 1 protrudes out of the circular conduits 18a, 18b, 18c and is surrounded for each contact rod 1 by a socket shield 19 (see also Figures 11 and 12). These sockets 19 are inserted into the circular conduits 18a, 18b, 18c, so as to be in contact with the shield 3 of the blocks 4a, 4b.

We will now describe with reference to Figures 6 to 13, the method of manufacturing a connector according to the invention.

In a first step (see Figure 6), the contact rods 1 bent are produced by cutting them from a metal sheet. This cutting leaves in place spacers 20, 21 connecting between the rods 1 near the ends thereof.

In a subsequent step (see FIG. 8), an insulating material 2 is molded around the contact rods 1.

Dans l'étape suivante, illustrée par la figure 9, on découpe l'entretoise de liaison 20 située près de l'une des extrémités des tiges de contact 1.In the next step, illustrated in FIG. 9, the connecting spacer 20 located near one of the ends of the contact rods 1 is cut.

In the step shown in Figure 10, we put in place the assembly obtained following the previous step, in the channels 5a, 5b, 5c of the shielding block 4a, then we place above the block of shield 4a, comprising the above assembly, the other shield block 4b, so that its channels 6a, 6b, 6c, cover the insulating material 2 of the contact rods 1.

In the next step (see FIG. 11), the shielding sockets 19 are put into place in the conduits 18a, 18b, 18c of the block 4a.

In a subsequent step shown in FIG. 12, pins 23 connected by a connecting spacer 24 are placed on the lateral face of the block 4b, from which the ends of the contact rods 1 project.

The main advantages of the connector just described are as follows:

Since the shielding blocks 4a, 4b are obtained by molding, they can be mass produced at a reduced cost.

The interruption of the shielding in the zones 7a, 7b (see FIG. 1) makes it possible to reduce the size of the connector and to place the contact rods 1 very close to one another.

The cutting of the contact rods in a sheet and the overmolding of these by the insulating material also makes it possible to facilitate the manufacture of the connectors and to reduce their cost.
