Abstract

Several braids (26) to connect a moving contact (10) to a lug (14) for the current lead are attached to the lug by welding under pressure, the ends (32) of the braids (26) being placed in slots (34, 36, 38) made in the face of the lug (14). The welding occurs without any need of hard solder.

Description

The invention relates to a method of fixed electrical connection of flexible conductors such as braids, of large cross section on the end of a current supply area of flattened cross section.

High current cut-off devices, for example of a few thousand Amps, include flexible conductors, in this case shunts or braids, for connecting the mobile part, in particular mobile contact fingers and the current supply range. The end of these flexible conductors is generally secured to the upper surface of the current supply range by welding or by tightening with bolts. These fixing methods are entirely satisfactory for conductors of limited section, but are difficult to apply to shunts or braids of large section necessary for the passage of current in the aforementioned devices.

There is already known, in particular from document GB-A-985 597, a method of fixing a conductor to a block-shaped brush, the cross section of which is notably greater than that of the conductor. The end of the conductor is introduced into a groove made on one of the side faces of the block and it is electrically welded by resistance to the block.

The method according to the present invention aims to allow a fixed connection of flexible conductors, in particular of braids, of large section, on a flattened area.

The method according to the invention is a method of fixed electrical connection of flexible conductors to a part by electrical welding by resistance of at least one conductor placed in a notch of said part, characterized in that the conductors are flexible conductors of high section, such as braids, intended to be fixed on the end of a current supply area of flattened section, several notches, the section of which corresponds to that of the associated conductor or conductors being provided in the edge of the end of the pad and separated laterally by teeth liable to deform, the ends of the conductors being introduced without play in the notches, then electrically welded by resistance to said pad, so that said teeth are deformed during welding and compress the ends of the conductors.

By practicing notches of greater or lesser depth, it is possible to increase the fixing surface of the flexible conductors and to provide housings receiving ends of these flexible conductors, in particular braids. Subsequently, the flexible conductors will be called braids, other types of conductors can of course be used.

The electrical and mechanical connection of the braids to the pad is carried out in a high capacity welding press capable of deforming the teeth defined by the notches in order to compress and grip the ends of the braids in the notches and to perform welding without the addition of solder. The absence of tin or another solder prevents the diffusion of tin in the braid and a stiffening of the latter. The edge of the current supply range can be cut into slots over its entire width to define a series of notches, each of which receives the end or ends of one or more braids juxtaposed or superimposed in the notch. The housing of the braids in the notches facilitates their positioning and allows the connection of all the braids to the current supply range by a single operation requiring no annealing. This crenellated cutting reduces the section of the projecting teeth which allows their deformation under the compression force exerted by the press and a compression of the ends of the braids engaged between the teeth.

The invention also relates to a device for electrical connection of a plurality of braids, in particular for connecting the contact fingers of an electrical switching device to a current supply range. In high intensity devices it is common to use several connection braids whose rigidity is less than that of a single braid of large section. All of these braids, which can be connected to one or more movable contact fingers, is fixed to the current supply range by housing, according to the present invention, the ends of these braids in notches formed in the end of the beach. As an indication, it can be specified that the notch connection according to the invention has made it possible to fix on a thin area 45 mm wide by 8 mm thick five braids each having a section of 40 mm square. The braid section connected to the deck can also be increased by increasing the depth of the notches.

The braids extend at the exit of the notches in the extension of the range, or according to a preferred embodiment perpendicular to the range. When connecting a large number of braids on the same range, it is better to accommodate several braids in the same notch than to increase the number of notches by reducing the width of the teeth which could weaken the whole .

  • la figure 1 est une vue schématique en élévation d'un contact électrique ayant des tresses de liaison raccordées à une plage d'amenée de courant, selon l'invention;
  • la figure 2 est une vue en plan de la fig. 1;
  • la figure 3 illustre schématiquement la presse à souder de la plage selon la fig. 1, avant l'opération de soudage;
  • la figure 4 est une vue analogue à celle de la fig. 3, montrant l'ensemble après l'opération de soudage;
Other advantages and characteristics will emerge more clearly from the description which follows of an embodiment of the invention, given by way of nonlimiting example and represented in the appended drawings, in which:
  • Figure 1 is a schematic elevational view of an electrical contact having connecting braids connected to a current supply range, according to the invention;
  • FIG. 2 is a plan view of FIG. 1;
  • FIG. 3 schematically illustrates the welding press of the range according to FIG. 1, before the welding operation;
  • Figure 4 is a view similar to that of FIG. 3, showing the assembly after the welding operation;
  • Figure 5 is a side view of the contact pad after the welding operation.

In the figures, a movable contact 10 of a high current cut-off device, for example of an electric circuit breaker of the type described in French patent No. 2,484,136, cooperates with a fixed contact 12. These contacts are connected respectively to a current supply range 14 and to starting range 16, the movable contact 10 can be moved to the open position to interrupt the current. The movable contact 10 designed for nominal intensities of several thousand amperes consists of five fingers 18 mounted on the same axis 20 secured to a contact carrier (not shown) actuated by the circuit breaker mechanism. Each finger or contact 18 has lamellae 22, 24, the number of these lamellae obviously being able to be different. The movable contact 10 is connected to the pad 14 by five braids 26, each associated with one of the contact fingers 18. The end 28 of the braid 26 is engaged in a notch 30 formed in the rear part of the contact finger 18, the fixing being carried out by soldering with tin. The opposite end 32 is connected to the current supply range 14 by pressure welding in notches 34, 36, 38. In the example illustrated by the figures, the range 14 of a section of 8 x 45 mm has on the edge 40 three notches 34, 36, 38 in the form of notches crossing the entire height of the area 14. The notches 34, 36, 38 in the form of slots are delimited by teeth 42, the end notches 34 , 38 each receiving two braids 26, while the notch in the middle 36 receives the end 32 of a single braid. The width of the end notches 34, 38 is of course greater than that of the notch 36. The braids are introduced into the notches 34, 36, 38 so as to extend perpendicular to the area 14, a different arrangement, in particular of alignment of the braid 26 with the pad 14, being conceivable.

Referring more particularly to FIGS. 3 and 4, which illustrate the method of welding the braids 26 to the pad 14, it can be seen that the latter is taken between the jaws 44 of a welding press, the notched part being projecting in look of the press's mobile electrode 46. The braids 26 are placed in the notches 34, 36, 38, this positioning being effected by simple insertion of the ends 32 in the notches before the electric 46 is applied to the edge 40 of the track 14. L electrode 46 covers the entire edge 40 and under the high pressure which can reach several thousand kilos and under the effect of electric heating, the intensity of the current being able to be several tens of thousands of amperes, the teeth 42 are crushed in compressing and welding the braids in the notches 34, 36, 38. The welding is carried out by heating and compression without the addition of solder and without annealing. The crushed or flared shape of the teeth 42 under the effect of the pressure is illustrated by FIGS. 4 and 5. The fixing of the set of braids 26 and carried out by a single operation without requiring accessories for holding or positioning the braids 26. The ends 32 housed in the same notch 34, 38 can be juxtaposed as shown in the figures, or superimposed, the depth of the notch 34, 38 then being appropriate to the number of ends 32 superimposed. It is clear that the ends 32 housed in the same notch 34, 38 may belong to braids 26 connected to the same contact finger 18, which makes it possible to reduce the section of these braids 26, or that any other arrangement is conceivable. The section of the notches 34, 36, 38 is adapted to that of the ends 32 so that the latter are accommodated without play in the notches before the welding operation. The welding connection according to the invention does not increase the size of the connection pad 14 and it retains the flexibility of the braids 26 which makes it possible to limit their length. The method according to the invention is particularly suitable for welding copper braids 26 on copper pads 14, but it is applicable to different materials for welding on aluminum pads. This method is particularly advantageous for fixing several braids 26 to the same area 14, but it would not go beyond the scope of the invention to apply it for fixing a single braid.

It is unnecessary to describe in more detail the welding press which is of a conventional type or the process which boils down to the placement of the pad 14 between the jaws 44 of the press, the braids 26 being inserted in the notches 34, 36, 38 and to the application of the movable electrode 46 on the wafer 40 under high pressure for resistance welding in the usual manner.
