Abstract

PCT No. PCT/EP95/01021 Sec. 371 Date Nov. 5, 1996 Sec. 102(e) Date Nov. 5, 1996 PCT Filed Mar. 18, 1995 PCT Pub. No. WO95/25669 PCT Pub. Date Sep. 28, 1995The specification represents and describes a cuboid flat gable package, with the composite having at least one carrier layer made from paper or cardboard, a coupling layer, an oxygen barrier layer and a double-sided plastic coating made from polyethylene (PE). An opening area is provided in the package gable which which is adapted to be severed to form a pour opening pouring element is provided with a reclosable closing lid being hinged thereto in one piece and whose flange encompassing the opening area is rigidly connected to the package surface and whose closing lid is provided with a tubus corresponding to the shape of the opening area. In order to reduce the overall height of the pouring element used and to reliably ensure a perfect pouring it is provided that in the zone of the opening area the carrier layer is omitted and that an opening aid for pulling out the composite portion situated in the zone of the opening area is attached on the package gable in the interior of the opening area which has been sealed over. The specification further describes a process for producing such a flat gable composite package.

Description

The invention relates to a cuboid flat gable composite package, in particular an ear package with a central or corner seam, the composite having at least one carrier layer made of paper or cardboard, an adhesion promoter layer, an oxygen barrier layer, preferably made of aluminum, and a plastic coating on both sides made of polyethylene (PE), with an im Packing gable provided opening area, which forms a pouring hole after severing, with a pouring element having a reclosable, hinged closure lid, the flange surrounding the opening area being firmly connected to the packaging surface and the closure lid having a tube corresponding to the contour of the opening area, in the region of the opening area the carrier layer is left out and a method for producing such a flat gable composite package.

Rectangular flat gable composite packages are known in many copies. They are mainly used in the field of liquid packaging in connection with cold, cold sterile, hot and aseptic filling. As a rule, these packages cannot be closed again after opening them once.

It has therefore already been proposed in flat gable composite packs of the type described above to arrange a pouring element in the pack gable which is equipped with a corresponding closure cover (DE 38 08 303 A1). It is in the area of the cardboard layer and outer PE layer is provided with a circumferential dividing line for weakening the gable material, into which a tube, which is connected in one piece to the closure cover and corresponds to the shape of the circumferential dividing line, is pressed into the packing material to open the pack. To better cut through the weakened dividing line, the lower edge of the tube is provided with suitable mechanical opening means such as cutting or the like.

However, the flat gable composite package described above is in need of improvement in several points. It is clear that for the purposes of storage and transportation it must be ensured that the tube connected to the sealing cap must not penetrate the material prematurely, ie before the pack is used for the first time. For this purpose, in the generic state of the art, a tab is provided which fixes the closure cover and the flange of the pouring element which surrounds the dividing line at a predetermined distance. It is only after removing this tab that it is possible to push the opening tube into the composite packaging material by pressing in the sealing cover. This in turn means that a certain minimum height of the known pouring element is mandatory. However, this is disadvantageous because of the stackability required for flat gable composite packs.

Furthermore, there is the possibility that the package piece separated from the tube is completely detached from the rest of the package assembly and thus gets into the liquid. However, this is not hygienic and can also lead to problems when pouring out if the package composite piece floating freely in the liquid "clogs" the pouring opening in whole or in part or even reaches the drinking vessel through the pouring opening.

Proceeding from this, the present invention is based on the object of a cuboid flat gable composite package of the type described in the introduction and a method for the same To design and refine production so that the overall height of the pouring element used is reduced and a perfect pouring is reliably guaranteed.

With regard to the flat gable composite package, the solution to the problem is that an opening aid for pulling out the carrier layer-free composite piece located in the region of the opening surface is applied to the package gable in the interior of the sealed opening area.

With regard to the manufacturing process of such a flat gable composite package, the task is solved by the following steps:
  • Production of the opening area in the carrier layer in the area of the later pouring opening,
  • Application of the outer PE layers,
  • Laminating an aluminum layer,
  • Application of the inner PE layers,
  • Grooves of the multilayer composite,
  • Pre-folding a package blank,
  • Sealing the longitudinal seams into a tubular packing jacket,
  • Applying the opening aid to the opening area as well as folding and sealing the packaging base,
  • Folding and sealing the pack pediment after filling the pack and
  • Applying the pouring element provided with a closure lid to the opening area of the finished package.

Because the packaging surface is provided with a PE layer, it is particularly expedient that both the flange of the pouring element surrounding the opening surface and the opening aid provided in the interior of the opening surface are sealed. It goes without saying that the pouring element and opening aid consist of a correspondingly sealable material, such as polypropylene.

In a preferred development of the invention, the opening aid consists of tear-resistant, sealable and ultrasonically weldable material and is welded to the layer composite in the interior of the opening area. It is particularly expedient if the ultrasonic weld seam is essentially adapted to the contour of the opening of the pouring element. In this way, after removing such an opening aid, the composite piece located inside the opening is completely removed. It is clear that the opening aid should not protrude over the area of the opening of the pouring element so that the later application of the pouring element on the packaging surface is not impaired.

Both with sealed opening aid and with ultrasonically welded opening aid, it is particularly advantageous that the geometry of the opening aid is selected so that the package is initially torn open at a single point of cracking. This can be done, for example, in that the circumferential sealing or ultrasonic weld seam has a discontinuity shaped as a tip or the like, from which the tearing process begins.

Another teaching of the invention provides that the opening area is produced by means of laser beams. Due to the good controllability of this technology and the absolutely clean cutting edge, laser production is the preferred method. Nevertheless, in an alternative embodiment of the invention it is also possible for the opening area to be produced by stamping.

In a further embodiment of the invention, the opening aid has a base plate and a handle provided on the base plate for lifting the base plate. It is particularly advantageous that the base plate is made of flexible material and that an annular tab is provided as a handle. In this way, the packing composite material present in the area of the opening area below the base plate can be removed by simply pulling it out together with the base plate and ring tab.

It is clear that according to the invention the overall height of the pouring element can be significantly reduced compared to the prior art, since a circumferential and a predetermined distance between the closure lid and the flange of the pouring element is no longer necessary. Furthermore, it is reliably excluded that the problems described above can occur during the pouring process, since the part of the “residual composite” which forms the opening surface never reaches the inside of the package from the pouring opening, but is removed to the outside before the first use. For easier opening, at least the upper PE layer is severed along the circumferential edge of the opening area.

For better illustration, the pouring element 2 used according to the invention is shown in longitudinal section in FIGS. 5 to 7. Fig. 5 shows an embodiment of a pouring element according to the invention in the closed state. The closure cover 4 is articulated on the vertical part of the flange 3 surrounding the dividing line. Furthermore, the closure cover 4 has a tube 9 corresponding to the shape of the opening surface 5, as can also be seen in FIGS. 4, 6 and 7.

Fig. 3b can also be seen that an opening aid, not shown, can also be arranged within the opening surface 5, which consists of tear-resistant, sealable and ultrasonically weldable material and is ultrasonically welded to the outer PE layer of the pack. Such an ultrasonic weld seam is indicated by a dash-dot line. It can be seen that the circumferential ultrasonic weld seam has a discontinuity, namely a tip S serving as a tearing point, which reaches up to the edge of the opening surface 5. In this way, it is reliably ensured that when the opening aid (not shown) is actuated, the opening area 5 is first torn open in the region of the tip S. From there, tearing on both sides takes place along the opening contour, in particular if - as indicated in FIGS. 3b and 2 - the upper PE layer has been separated along the opening contour by means of a laser beam L.

In the variant with an ultrasonic welding seam, the opening aid 6 can consist of a piece of film, the external dimensions of which do not protrude beyond the contour of the opening area, in order not to impair the later application of the pouring element 2.

To open the flat gable composite package according to the invention, the closure cover 4 is raised and thus brought into the position of FIGS. 6 and 7. Subsequently, the opening aid 6 is raised by tearing the lower layers together with the handle 8 fastened to the base plate 7 together with the composite remnant formed by the opening surface 5 until a completely exposed pouring hole 10 is formed, as shown in FIG. 7. The tube 9 can be anchored in the interior of the circumferential flange 3 by closing the closure cap 4 again. For better sealing, a projection 11 is provided at the tip of the closure lid 4, which protrusion forms the pouring spout 12 formed by the pouring element 2 at least on the side opposite to the articulation, as can be seen in particular in FIG. 5.

Finally, according to a further teaching of the invention, the outer PE layer in the region of the edges of the opening area is destroyed, for example by laser radiation. However, it is also possible to destroy the adhesion promoter layer by correspondingly increasing the intensity of the laser radiation L, as is indicated by dash-dotted lines in FIG. 2. In this case, the opening area 5 still has four layers, but the circumferential dividing line only consists of an oxygen barrier layer and an inner PE layer.
