Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for filling a container, which can be closed with a lid, with a protective gas according to the preamble of claim 1.
- a device according to the preamble of claim 1 is already known, apart from the fact that it is only used for evacuating containers and not for filling with protective gas.
- a stopper-shaped metal cap is used as a closure, which is inserted into the hole with a support designed as a ring stamp, which can be actuated via push rods with a hand lever.
- the metal cap is attached to the carrier with a clamp for detachable fastening. So that the metal cap can be inserted into the hole, the evacuation head must be centered relative to the container in the known device.
- two ring grooves are on the one hand on a mounting plate for two containers of different sizes provided, in which the respective container engages with its edge projecting downward, and on the other hand two ring shoulders provided with seals of different sizes, which overlap the upper edge of the container. That is, the known device is only suitable for a few container sizes. Furthermore, the plug can practically no longer be pulled out of the hole when the container is evacuated.
- the object of the invention is to reliably fill a container of almost any size with protective gas and to be able to provide it with an easy-to-open closure without having to center the closure exactly.
- a seal is formed between the cover and this housing front side by the seal on the front side of the filling head housing.
- This space is connected to the inside of the container through the hole in the lid. Furthermore, this room can be evacuated and filled with a protective gas.
- the filling head advantageously has a separate line for evacuation and filling.
- the container is first evacuated via the vacuum line and then filled with the protective gas. If the container is not sufficiently pressure-stable to completely or almost completely evacuate, the protective gas can also be filled in several steps, with the container being only partially evacuated at each step, i.e. as far as the container allows what the protective gas is supplied.
- the closure plate can consist of iron or another ferromagnetic metal or of a ferromagnetic plastic.
- the closure plate can also be constructed in multiple layers, for example from a ferromagnetic metal plate which faces the magnet, and a layer of rubber or similar elastomeric material which adheres to the lid to seal the hole. It is also possible to use a metal plate, which is provided at its edge with a seal made of an elastomeric material.
- a reliable sealing of the hole in the lid is achieved with a closure plate which has a projection which surrounds the hole and which is pressed firmly against a seal which is provided around the hole on the lid.
- any gas that is compatible with the contents of the container can be used as the protective gas.
- these include, in particular, inert gases, for example noble gases such as argon or nitrogen.
- the protective gas can also be carbon dioxide or the like, for example.
- the container which can be closed with the lid and which is to be filled with protective gas according to the invention can be the original container, that is to say for example the paint or paint can which is commercially available. So that the original container can be filled with protective gas with the device according to the invention, the lid must be provided with a hole. With the hole, the lid of the container can either be provided by the consumer, but the container is preferably already marketed with a hole, the hole being closed, for example, by an adhesive tape or small plate.
- the receptacle is preferably adapted to the size and shape of the original container in order not to unnecessarily extend the evacuation and not to waste protective gas.
- a less stable original can can also be evacuated directly in a support form.
- the inner wall of the support form is so adapted to the size and shape of the particularly frequently occurring container that only a narrow gap-shaped space is created between the inner wall and the container. This space is evacuated at the same time as the container.
- the gap is sealed to the outside by a seal which is provided between the upper container edge and the upper edge of the support mold. If, as is often the case with a can, the container has an outwardly flanged edge, the seal can be provided on the edge of the support mold. The gap is then sealed to the outside by resting the flanged edge on this seal.
- the filling head need only be arranged so that the seal on the filling head around Hole is arranged in the lid. An exact centering of the filling head is not necessary. The diameter of the lid and thus the container also does not matter.
- the container After evacuation, the container is filled with filling gas so that a slight negative pressure remains. This negative pressure in the container is only so great that it holds the sealing plate on the lid. The sealing plate can thus be easily removed.
- the space between the filling head and the lid has a small volume. Rapid evacuation is thus achieved and the shielding gas used is essentially restricted to the contents of the container.
- paint and lacquer cans can be filled with protective gas after opening.
- the use of the device according to the invention is not limited to this. Rather, the device according to the invention can be used with all oxygen-sensitive products which are supplied in cans or similar containers with a lid, but which generally do not use the entire contents of the container at once, but in smaller quantities over a longer period of time.
- food containers e.g. be filled with a protective gas in the catering sector.
- the device 1 has a filling head 2 which essentially consists of a solid cylinder which has an O-ring seal 6 on its end face 5 which faces the cover 3 of the container 4.
- the seal 6 is seated in an annular groove 7, the inner flank of which is formed by a ring 9 fastened to the end face 5 with screws 8.
- the filling head 2 can e.g. be made of plastic by injection molding or consist of metal. It has a diameter of, for example, 5 to 20 centimeters.
- an axially extending cylinder space 10 designed as a blind bore, in which a sleeve 11 is seated, which e.g. can consist of metal and serves as a sliding bearing for a piston 12.
- the piston 12 is sealed off from the sleeve 11 by piston rings 13, 14.
- a disk-shaped carrier 15 for a disk-shaped closure plate 16 is attached to the piston 12.
- the carrier 15 is arranged in a cylinder space 10 ′ with a larger diameter than the cylinder space 10.
- the carrier 15 has on its side facing away from the cover 3 an annular shoulder 17, with which it rests in the extended state of the piston 12 shown in the drawing on the ring 9, which is attached to the cover 3 facing end face 5 of the filling head 2 is. Due to its contact with the ring shoulder 17 on the ring 9, the carrier 15 with the piston 12 is prevented from falling out of the housing 2 fixed. So that the carrier 15 arranged on the piston 12 can be moved axially, the filling head 2 has the cylindrical recess 10 ′ on the end face 5. In the extended state, the carrier 15 protrudes with the closure plate 16 over the seal 6 to the outside.
- the piston 12 and the carrier 15 may be integrally formed, e.g. be made of plastic by injection molding or consist of metal.
- the closure plate 16 is releasably attached to the carrier 15.
- the carrier 15 has a permanent magnet 19 in a recess 18.
- the closure plate 16 is made of steel. That is, it is ferromagnetic and thus adheres to the permanent magnet 19 of the carrier 15.
- Three lines 22, 23, 24 are connected to the filling head 2 on the end face 21 facing away from the container 4.
- the lines 22 and 23 lead to electrically actuable valves 25, 26 which are fastened on the end face 21 of the filling head 2.
- the line 24 is connected directly to the filling head 2. From the valves 25, 26, bores (not shown in the drawing) in the filling head 2 lead laterally into the recess 10 ', while from the line 24 a bore (also not shown in the drawing) leads into the part of the cylinder space 10 closed by the piston 12.
- Line 22 leads to a vacuum pump, not shown, line 23 to a pressure bottle, not shown, with protective gas, e.g. Argon, and line 24 also to the vacuum pump.
- the head 1 can be covered at the top by a protective hood 27, as indicated in the drawing.
- the lid 3 has a hole 28 in the middle with a diameter of, for example, 2 to 6 millimeters.
- the hole 28 can but also be much larger, that is to say they take up practically the entire diameter of the cover 3.
- the closure plate 16 is coated with a mass of rubber or another elastomeric material. This forms a seal 20 with which the closure plate 16 is sealed off from the cover 3 when it is arranged on the cover 3 in order to close the hole 28.
- the lid 3 sits, as usual, with a seal 30 firmly on the edge 31 of the container 4th
- the filled container 4 is e.g. delivered so that the hole 28 is closed with an adhesive tape.
- the adhesive tape is removed.
- the filling head 2 is in the state as shown in Fig. 1, e.g. placed by hand on the lid 3, so that the seal 6 on the filling head 2 is arranged around the opening 28 on the lid 3 and is pressed against the lid 3.
- the cylinder chamber 10 is then evacuated via the line 24, as a result of which the piston 12 with the carrier 15 and the closure plate 16 magnetically adhering thereto is retracted.
- valve 25 is now opened so that a vacuum is applied to the space via the line 22, which lies between the end face 5 of the filling head 2 and the cover 3 and is closed by the seal 6. Since this space communicates with the inside of the container 3 via the hole 28 in the lid 3, the container 4 is also evacuated.
- the valve 25 is closed. This predetermined value depends primarily on the stability of the container 4, that is to say on the vacuum which the container 4 can withstand.
- valve 26 is opened so that protective gas is now supplied to the space enclosed by the filling head 2, the lid 3 and the seal 6.
- the shielding gas is supplied until a predetermined negative pressure in relation to the atmosphere (approx. 1000 millibars) of, for example, 800 millibars has been established. This means that a slight vacuum of minus 200 millibars remains in the container 4.
- the valve 26 is then closed.
- the evacuation and protective gas supply can take place automatically by means of corresponding pressure sensors which actuate the pressure valves 25, 26. Then the line 24 is connected to the atmosphere, so that the piston 12 is extended again and takes the position shown in the drawing. The negative pressure in the container 4 sucks the closure plate 16. This suction force is greater than the holding force of the magnet 19. As a result, the closure plate 16 adheres to the cover 3 when the filling head 2 is removed.
- the negative pressure that is required in the container 4 in order to press the closure plate 16 so tightly against the seal 29 that a reliable seal is ensured depends on the diameter of the closure plate 16, that is to say the size of the surface of the closure plate 16 the negative pressure works. With a diameter of the plate 16 of 2 centimeters or more, a negative pressure of minus 100 millibars in relation to the atmospheric pressure is generally sufficient. If a vacuum of this size cannot be set, especially with larger containers, this can Closure plate 16 are either made larger or additionally fixed with an adhesive tape. It is also possible to provide the closure plate 16 with an adhesive coating on the side facing the cover 3.
- the projection 29 of the seal 20 also achieves a very high surface pressure between the seal 20 and the cover 3 in the region of the projection 29 and thus a particularly reliable seal.
- the diameter of the closure plate 16 is at least four times the diameter of the hole 28 in the cover 3.
- the diameter of the annular projection 29 of the seal is also as large as possible, that is to say at least three times the diameter of the hole 28.
- valves 25, 26 on the filling head 2 ensure that no air can get into the container 4 due to leaks in the line 23. This also reduces gas consumption.
- FIG. 3 shows a support mold 32 with which a less stable container 4, for example a tin can, can be evacuated with the device 1 in order to then fill it with protective gas.
- a less stable container 4 for example a tin can
- the support form 32 has an inner wall 33 which is adapted to the shape and size of the container 4 to such an extent that, at most, a narrow, gap-shaped intermediate space 34 between the inner wall 33 and the peripheral wall of the container 4 remains.
- the z. B. existing container 4 is flared at its upper edge 31 towards the outside, as can be seen in particular from FIG. 1.
- the support form 32 has at its upper edge 36 a sealing ring 37 on which the container 4 arranged in the support form 32 rests with its flanged edge 31. As a result, the intermediate space 34 is sealed off from the outside.
- the intermediate space 34 can be evacuated.
- a vacuum connection in the form of a connector 38 is provided on the support mold 32, to which a bore 39 connects, which opens out on the inner wall 33.
- the vacuum in the intermediate space 34 is equal to or slightly greater than the vacuum that exists inside the container 4 when it is evacuated. So that no inward forces are exerted on the wall of the container 4, so that it, even if it is very thin-walled, is not deformed.

Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a device for filling a container, which can be closed with a lid, with a protective gas according to the preamble of claim 1.
If, for example, paint cans are opened to remove a smaller amount of paint and then closed again, air enters the can, which can lead to skin formation and thus to the uselessness of the entire remaining contents of the can. In addition, the disposal of the unusable paint in the can creates problems. Similar difficulties are encountered with other oxygen sensitive products which are supplied in cans or the like with a lid, but which generally do not use the contents all at once but in small quantities. These difficulties could be avoided if the container could be filled with a protective gas each time it was opened.
From US-A-1,362,203 a device according to the preamble of claim 1 is already known, apart from the fact that it is only used for evacuating containers and not for filling with protective gas. In the known device, a stopper-shaped metal cap is used as a closure, which is inserted into the hole with a support designed as a ring stamp, which can be actuated via push rods with a hand lever. The metal cap is attached to the carrier with a clamp for detachable fastening. So that the metal cap can be inserted into the hole, the evacuation head must be centered relative to the container in the known device. For this purpose, two ring grooves are on the one hand on a mounting plate for two containers of different sizes provided, in which the respective container engages with its edge projecting downward, and on the other hand two ring shoulders provided with seals of different sizes, which overlap the upper edge of the container. That is, the known device is only suitable for a few container sizes. Furthermore, the plug can practically no longer be pulled out of the hole when the container is evacuated.
The object of the invention is to reliably fill a container of almost any size with protective gas and to be able to provide it with an easy-to-open closure without having to center the closure exactly.
This is achieved according to the invention by the device characterized in claim 1. Advantageous embodiments of the invention are given in the subclaims.
In the device according to the invention, a seal is formed between the cover and this housing front side by the seal on the front side of the filling head housing. This space is connected to the inside of the container through the hole in the lid. Furthermore, this room can be evacuated and filled with a protective gas. For this purpose, the filling head advantageously has a separate line for evacuation and filling.
According to the invention, the container is first evacuated via the vacuum line and then filled with the protective gas. If the container is not sufficiently pressure-stable to completely or almost completely evacuate, the protective gas can also be filled in several steps, with the container being only partially evacuated at each step, i.e. as far as the container allows what the protective gas is supplied.
The closure plate can consist of iron or another ferromagnetic metal or of a ferromagnetic plastic. The closure plate can also be constructed in multiple layers, for example from a ferromagnetic metal plate which faces the magnet, and a layer of rubber or similar elastomeric material which adheres to the lid to seal the hole. It is also possible to use a metal plate, which is provided at its edge with a seal made of an elastomeric material.
A reliable sealing of the hole in the lid is achieved with a closure plate which has a projection which surrounds the hole and which is pressed firmly against a seal which is provided around the hole on the lid.
Any gas that is compatible with the contents of the container can be used as the protective gas. These include, in particular, inert gases, for example noble gases such as argon or nitrogen. However, the protective gas can also be carbon dioxide or the like, for example.
The container which can be closed with the lid and which is to be filled with protective gas according to the invention can be the original container, that is to say for example the paint or paint can which is commercially available. So that the original container can be filled with protective gas with the device according to the invention, the lid must be provided with a hole. With the hole, the lid of the container can either be provided by the consumer, but the container is preferably already marketed with a hole, the hole being closed, for example, by an adhesive tape or small plate.
However, direct filling with protective gas is only possible with containers that are so stable that they do not contract during evacuation.
In the case of less stable containers, it is possible to use a separate receptacle with a lid, in which the commercially available container is placed after opening. The lid of the receptacle is provided with the hole.
The receptacle is preferably adapted to the size and shape of the original container in order not to unnecessarily extend the evacuation and not to waste protective gas.
Most containers are standardized nowadays. For example, cans for certain products, such as paint cans, are only available in a few sizes, and one of them is often sold particularly often. In this case, a less stable original can can also be evacuated directly in a support form. For this purpose, the inner wall of the support form is so adapted to the size and shape of the particularly frequently occurring container that only a narrow gap-shaped space is created between the inner wall and the container. This space is evacuated at the same time as the container.
The gap is sealed to the outside by a seal which is provided between the upper container edge and the upper edge of the support mold. If, as is often the case with a can, the container has an outwardly flanged edge, the seal can be provided on the edge of the support mold. The gap is then sealed to the outside by resting the flanged edge on this seal.
According to the invention, the filling head need only be arranged so that the seal on the filling head around Hole is arranged in the lid. An exact centering of the filling head is not necessary. The diameter of the lid and thus the container also does not matter.
After evacuation, the container is filled with filling gas so that a slight negative pressure remains. This negative pressure in the container is only so great that it holds the sealing plate on the lid. The sealing plate can thus be easily removed.
Due to the piston in the pneumatic cylinder as an actuating device for the carrier, to which the closure plate can be attached, the space between the filling head and the lid has a small volume. Rapid evacuation is thus achieved and the shielding gas used is essentially restricted to the contents of the container.
With the device according to the invention, in particular paint and lacquer cans can be filled with protective gas after opening. However, the use of the device according to the invention is not limited to this. Rather, the device according to the invention can be used with all oxygen-sensitive products which are supplied in cans or similar containers with a lid, but which generally do not use the entire contents of the container at once, but in smaller quantities over a longer period of time. For example, food containers e.g. be filled with a protective gas in the catering sector.

The device 1 according to the invention has a filling
The filling
Provided in the filling
On its side facing the
The
The
Three
The head 1 can be covered at the top by a
The
The filling
The
The
If the negative pressure measured with a pressure sensor has a predetermined value of e.g. Has reached 200 millibars, the
Then the
The evacuation and protective gas supply can take place automatically by means of corresponding pressure sensors which actuate the
The negative pressure that is required in the
So that the force with which the
The
The
For this purpose, the
The
When the
