Definitions
- the invention relates to the field of coating metallurgical products with a metal alloy, in particular the galvanization of steel products, by dipping these products in a bath containing this alloy in the liquid state.
- the galvanization of metallurgical products is carried out by letting these fixed products stay or by scrolling in a molten metal bath based on zinc and which can also contain variable quantities (up to a few%) aluminum.
- these baths quickly become supersaturated with iron, and intermetallic compounds Fe-Zn or Fe-Al-Zn precipitate.
- These precipitates are called “mattes” and settle either towards the surface of the bath (from which they are periodically removed manually) or towards the bottom of the galvanizing tank, depending on their relative density compared to that of the zinc alloy bath. .
- This density is governed by their composition; the Fe-Al-Zn mattes settle towards the surface, the Fe-Zn mates towards the bottom.
- the bath therefore permanently contains a relatively large quantity of mattes. The consequence is that the mattes are deposited at the same time as the zinc alloy on the product to be coated, and often cause the appearance of serious defects in surface appearance in the coating.
- the object of the invention is to propose a process making it possible to accelerate the elimination of solid impurities within the liquid alloy baths, so as to regularly obtain a satisfactory quality for the dip coatings of metallurgical products.
- the subject of the invention is a process for coating a metallurgical product, in particular steel, according to which the said product is soaked in a bath of metal alloy containing solid impurities, characterized in that, in order to accelerate the settling of said impurities, an insonation of said alloy bath is carried out.
- Another subject of the invention is an installation for coating metallurgical products, in particular steel, of the type comprising a tank containing a bath of metallic alloy and means for dipping said products in said alloy bath, characterized in that it also includes means for insonating said alloy bath.
- said tank comprises at least one partition dividing it into at least two compartments each containing either said means for dipping said metallurgical products in said alloy bath, or said means for insonating said alloy bath, and l 'installation also includes means for communicating said compartments.
- the invention consists in injecting into the tank containing the liquid metallic alloy sound or ultrasonic waves which have the effect of accentuating the settling of impurities. It is particularly advisable to carry out this insonation in a zone of the tank separated by a partition from the zone where the coating takes place and to carry out a continuous exchange of liquid alloy between the two compartments thus defined.
- the inventors have found that the exposure of zinc alloy baths of the type used for galvanizing very significantly accelerates the settling of the mattes. It has been observed, in particular, thanks to the quenching of small crucibles a few cm high containing such alloys and which had or did not undergo an insonation during a determined period. This insonation was carried out for 30 minutes by means of a vibrating blade connected to an ultrasonic transmitter of frequency 25 kHz and immersed in a Zn-Fe-AI liquid alloy at 450 ° C. Once soaked, these crucibles and the alloy they contained were cut in the height direction, and the thickness of the mattes which had accumulated in the upper part of the crucible during the experiment was measured. .
- FIG. 1 schematically represents an installation for galvanizing a moving steel strip, modified according to the invention.
- a tank 1 with a length and a width of the order of a few meters, containing a bath 2 of zinc alloy, about 2 m deep and maintained in the liquid state at a temperature of l '' order of 400-500 ° C.
- the moving steel strip 3 enters the alloy bath 2 while being protected from the ambient air by a bell 4 whose upstream end is connected to the heat treatment installation which precedes the galvanization installation, and whose downstream end plunges into the alloy bath 2.
- the strip 3 comes to be wound against a drum 5 rotating around its axis 6, and immersed in the bath 2.
- the tank 1 is divided into two compartments 7 and 8 by a partition 9.
- the compartment 7 contains the members which have just been described and constitutes the galvanizing compartment proper, while the compartment 8 is the one where the settling of the mattes is preferably carried out by the process which is the subject of the invention.
- a permanent circulation of the liquid zinc alloy 2 is established between these two compartments 7 and 8 by means of one or more openings 10 made in the partition 9, and by means of a pipe 11 provided with a pump. 12 which returns to the settling compartment 8 the alloy taken from the galvanizing compartment 7 (the reverse course is also acceptable).
- accelerated decantation of the mattes is carried out in the decantation compartment 8 by means of a pavilion 13 of circular shape and of diameter on the order of 0.40 to 1 m, connected to a transducer 14, such as an electrodynamic, piezoelectric or magnetostrictive exciter.
- the frequency N is chosen so as to bring the horn 13 into resonance, and the distance "h" separating the horn 13 from the bottom of the tank 1 is chosen equal to an integer number of half-wavelengths ⁇ of the vibrations of the pavilion 13, in order to increase the vibratory efficiency of the installation.
- the electrical power of the transducer 14 can be of the order of 0.3 to 10 kW.
- the mattes of lower density than the bath 2 rise to the surface in the compartment 8 and form there a surface layer 15 enriched with mattes while the mattes of higher density than the bath 2 form a layer 16 in the bottom of the tank 1 .
- the transducer 14 It is also possible to replace the transducer 14 with an ultrasonic transmitter. Under these conditions, it is possible to create cavitation phenomena in the alloy bath 2, provided that its dimensions are reduced (of the order of a few tens of cm), or to multiply the number of transmitters so that the entire bath 2 is affected by cavitation and not only the areas closest to the pavilion 13.
- the ultrasonic emitters can be kept out of the alloy bath 2 and applied to the outside of the walls of the tray 1, which avoids providing means to protect them from attack by the alloy bath 2. In return, there is the risk that, in the general case, the vibratory efficiency of the transmitters is insufficient to obtain cavitation in the bath 2. It can therefore only be envisaged for installations of very small dimensions, which would for example be suitable for coating small insulated parts.
- FIG. 3 represents a possible variation of the installation according to the invention shown in FIG. 1.
- the elements common to the two installations are designated by the same references.
- the pipe 11 and the pump 12 bring the alloy bath from the settling compartment 8 to the galvanizing compartment 7.
- the return of the alloy to the settling compartment is effected by an overflow threshold 18 formed above of the partition 9, the height of which is slightly less than the nominal depth of the bath 2.
- the invention can be applied not only to installations for galvanizing the passing of steel strips, but to all installations for the dip coating of metallurgical products, whether moving or stationary, with a metal alloy initially liquid state and likely to contain solid impurities which one wishes to eliminate.

Abstract
Description
- - la figure 1 qui représente schématiquement une installation de galvanisation de bandes d'acier en défilement équipée d'un dispositif d'insonation du bain d'alliage pour la mise en oeuvre de l'invention ;
- - la figure 2 qui représente une variante du dispositif d'insonation ;
