Abstract

The subject invention is directed to rubber coatings for cleaning cloths comprised of foamed rubber and cellulose microfibers that promote biodegradability and enhance water absorbtivity and other desirable properties.

Description

The invention is concerned with abrasion-resistant, porous, highly absorbent cleaning cloths made of nonwoven, as are described, for example, in DE-B 1 560 783. There, a multi-stage production process is described, which essentially comprises the double impregnation with intermediate drying of a random fiber fleece, preferably made of hydrophilic natural fibers, with a foam-like, aqueous binder dispersion made of vulcanizable rubber, the two-sided, surface coating of the impregnated fiber sheet rubber, with a coagulated, foamable, coagulated the subsequent drying with vulcanization, washing out the pore formers contained in the coating and drying again.

The rubber outer coatings mentioned are very difficult to biodegrade and cannot be composted. Furthermore, the surfaces of such cleaning wipes are very sticky and have a noticeably high wiping resistance. This behavior inherent in the rubber can be alleviated by sprinkling talc. After washing out, which already happens with cleaning wipes when used for the first time, the talc is largely removed and the stickiness is present again. This can be so strong that, when dried, folded sheets are so strongly glued to themselves after drying that the coating is damaged if the bonded surfaces are separated by force.

The water absorption capacity of such a cloth is largely determined by the pores present in the coating, by the protruding into the coating and by the fibers of the cloth material located between the coatings. The same applies to printability, i.e. the absorption capacity for printing inks.

The object of the present invention is to make the surfaces coated with foamed rubber more abrasion-resistant, porous, highly absorbent cleaning cloths of the generic type more pleasant to use when in use, less adhesive when drying, more lubricious and absorbent and easier to print during manufacture. The biodegradability and compostability of such wipes should be made possible.

The solution to this problem is the use of cellulose microfibers in the foamed rubber coatings of cleaning cloths made of nonwoven. These microfibers are present in amounts of 20-100% by weight, based on the solid rubber weight of the coating.

The best results have been achieved with amounts of 20-50% by weight.

Furthermore, a wipe made using cellulose microfibers according to claim 1 is claimed.

The term "cellulose microfibers" used here includes mechanically comminuted cellulose with fiber lengths of 15-200 μm, preferably up to 60 μm. These fibers are made from natural pulp and are commercially available.

In the following, "rubber" is to be understood to mean all elastomers and mixtures which consist or are made from natural rubber, synthetic NBR or SBR latices and from copolymers of butadiene or isoprene. They can be self-crosslinking or vulcanized by conventional methods, but in the sense of this invention, bactericidal auxiliaries are avoided in order not to impair the good biodegradability or compostability and rotability of the cellulose.

Initially, it was not to be expected that the use of cellulose microfibers according to the invention would give rise to a cleaning cloth which, despite the high content of rubber, which is very difficult to access by microorganisms, is biodegradable or compostable.

It was found that with an increasing amount of cellulose microfibers, also referred to in the literature as "cellulose powder" or "powder cellulose", the degradability is facilitated. However, the cellulose content in the rubber coating composition must not be increased beyond the limit according to the invention, since otherwise the good properties of a cleaning cloth would be lost, in particular the strength, the drying ability and the cloth-like feel.

Without the disruptive influence of bactericidal auxiliaries in the rubber coating, the cellulose fibers apparently act as "islands" made of natural material, which represent the breeding ground and the space for the settlement of bacteria and from where the intensified, decomposing attack on the surrounding rubber takes place.

If the quantity limits according to the invention are observed, this advantage is not bought with the disadvantage of reducing the strength of the coating, as is the case, for example, if starch is added to plastic films for the same purpose, this is the case in a negative way.

As a further advantage, the surface of a cleaning cloth equipped according to the invention is far less sticky than without the addition of cellulose microfibers. Depending on the filler content, the usual powdering of the surface with talcum powder, which was previously necessary to improve the sliding properties, is then largely or completely eliminated.

Tests for wet gluing showed that the force required for separating wet cloths and then glued during drying, according to the invention, was only up to 1/4 of the force that had to be applied in order to glue cloths of this type in an analog design, but without the Addition of cellulose microfibers to separate them.

In the same way, the sliding resistance of wipes according to the invention is reduced by more than half when wet.

The effects mentioned increase with increasing cellulose content.

The higher lubricity results in less resistance when wiping, especially when the cloth is wet; so a noticeably less effort is required.

The wicking effect of the cellulose microfibers, in connection with the open pores of the rubber coating, promotes water absorption and the transmission of water into the interior of the cloth.

This property also results in the very good printability of wipes equipped according to the invention, since the dye can penetrate the surface coating more quickly and more deeply. The hindrance to penetration by superficially applied talc does not apply.

The improvement in color fastness is significant, especially in comparison with the coatings provided with talc, in which the printing ink sits partly on the talc instead of on the actual cloth.

With cellulose fiber contents of 20-50% by weight, based on the solid rubber weight of the coating, an optimum use of materials and the advantages mentioned above were achieved. The contents of more than 50-100% by weight of microfibers, likewise encompassed by the invention, are conceivable for cases in which the biodegradability or compostability is to be intensified still further.

The production of the base nonwoven can be carried out according to known methods, whereby in particular the fibers can be appropriately consolidated with one another by needles and / or by binding fibers introduced into the fiber mixture, which are activated by the influence of heat. The known solidification with plastic dispersions or with rubber latices is also possible.

Die Erfindung wird nun anhand der folgenden Beispiele näher erläutert:The invention will now be explained in more detail using the following examples:

Beispiel 1:Example 1:

A random fiber fleece consisting of 30% by weight of cotton, 50% by weight of cellulose and 20% by weight of polyester fibers is mechanically pre-bound in a needle chair, impregnated with an impregnation mixture and then dried. The impregnation mixture contains rubber latex, polymerized from butadiene and acrylonitrile, vulcanization aids, surfactants and stabilizers as well as table salt as a pore former. The salt content corresponds to the solid rubber content.

This mechanically and chemically bonded base material is then coated on both sides with a heat-sensitive and foamed rubber dispersion, which is a copolymer of butadiene, acrylonitrile and methacrylic acid, non-bactericidal vulcanization aids, surfactants and stabilizing agents and 30% by weight, based on the solid rubber weight of the coating, Contains microfibers with a fiber length of about 30 microns. These fibers are commercially available, e.g. under the name Arbocell BE 600/30 from J. Rettenmaier & Söhne GmbH & Co. in Ellwangen-Holzmühle.

After drying and vulcanizing, the water-soluble components are washed out with water and the finished product is finally dried.

After cutting into suitable format sizes for cleaning windows, furniture, sanitary facilities, motor vehicles and other surfaces, the cloth material contains 170 parts by weight of rubber vulcanizate per 100 parts by weight of the above-mentioned basic fiber mixture, 60 parts by weight of which are applied as a coating mixture on each side. This mixture has a content of 30% by weight of cellulose microfibers, based on the rubber it contains.

Gegenüber Tüchern, die in gleicher Weise, jedoch ohne Zusatz von Cellulose-Mikrofasern hergestellt sind, zeichnet sich das so hergestellte Reinigungstuch durch vorteilhafte Eigenschaften aus:Compared to wipes that are produced in the same way, but without the addition of cellulose microfibers, the cleaning wipe thus produced is characterized by advantageous properties:

Figure imgb0001
Lower wet adhesion (damp cloth is placed on top of one another and then dried), expressed as a separating force in N / 50 mm strip width:
Figure imgb0001

Die Wischkraft, ausgedrückt in N/500 cm², sinkt ebenfalls bei Einsatz von Cellulose-Mikrofasern in der Kautschuk-Beschichtung, verglichen mit Wischflächen des Standes der Technik: ohne Cellulose mit Cellulose Fenstertuch (240 g/m²) 18 8 Autotuch (280 g/m²) 22 10 The wiping force, expressed in N / 500 cm², also drops when cellulose microfibers are used in the rubber coating, compared to wiping surfaces of the prior art: without cellulose with cellulose Window cloth (240 g / m²) 18th 8th Car towel (280 g / m²) 22 10th

After four weeks, samples of wipes according to Example 1 buried in moist earth already showed clear signs of decomposition, while a cloth not equipped with cellulose microfibers, which was otherwise constructed analogously, showed no signs of rotting.

Beispiel 2:Example 2:

A non-woven fabric consisting of 80% by weight of cellulose and 20% by weight of polypropylene is mechanically bound in a needle chair and heated in a heating unit to such high temperatures that the polypropylene fibers stick to the neighboring cellulose fibers by softening or melting and a pre-bound base material is produced. The heating unit can be a heat tunnel and / or a calender with heatable rollers.

This base material pre-bound in this way is then coated on both sides with a heat-sensitive and foamed rubber dispersion as in Example 1.

The advantage of this variant is that the base material is completely free of bactericidal chemicals, not just the rubber coating.

Beispiel 3:Example 3:

A base material, produced as in Example 2, is coated on only one side with a heat-sensitive and foamed rubber dispersion as in Example 1.

Dispensing with a second coated side has the further advantage that the weight ratio of cellulose to rubber, which serves as a breeding ground for bacteria, is even more favorable, so that this composition of the system further promotes its vulnerability to microorganisms and thus rot and compostability .
