- the fuel injector works as follows: The fuel delivered by a fuel injection pump, not shown, is pressurized into the valve needle 3 receiving space of the nozzle body 1, the valve needle 3 lifts against a spring force against the sealing seat 2 at sufficient pressure, passes between the closing cone 4 and sealing seat 2 into the blind hole 6 and from there through the spray holes 10 into the combustion chamber. At the edges 11 and grooves 12 forming the peripheral wall of the spray holes 10, which extend transversely or substantially transversely to the flow direction and form tear-off edges, large areas are created in the flow in which the vapor pressure of the fuel falls below and thereby cavitation occurs. These cavities in the fuel jet implode after leaving the spray hole and atomize the fuel with selectively very high energy, so that a very high atomization quality of the fuel jet is achieved.
