Definitions
- the present invention relates to a heat-resistant spheroidal or vermicular graphite cast iron.
- the invention relates to a spheroidal or vermicular graphite cast iron which has a high resistance to oxidation and which has high mechanical qualities for temperatures typically ranging from 900 ° C. to more than 1000 ° C.
- the fonts available in these temperature ranges are austenitic fonts with a high nickel content. Typically, this content ranges from 20 to 35% by weight for temperatures above 900 ° C. For temperatures above 1000 ° C, silicon must also be added.
- the disadvantage of such cast irons is that they require the use of large amounts of nickel. This material has the disadvantage on the one hand of being expensive and on the other hand of being considered as a strategic material, therefore with very large price fluctuations.
- An object of the present invention is to provide a cast iron which has mechanical resistance and oxidation resistance properties at least equal to those of known cast irons at high temperatures typically higher than 900 ° C. but whose production costs are lower than those of known spheroidal graphite cast iron which has a high nickel content.
- cast iron an alloy comprising at least 85% iron.
- heat-resistant spheroidal or vermicular graphite cast iron is characterized in that it comprises from 4.7% to 7.1% by weight of Si equivalent, the Si equivalent being defined.
- Sieq Si + 0.8Al in which the weight content of Si is between 3.9% and 5.3% and the weight content of Al is between 0.5% and 2.5%.
- the cast iron further comprises from 0.5 to 1.5% of molybdenum.
- the GS cast iron further comprises 0.5 to 1.5% of cobalt and / or 0.5 to 1.5 of niobium.
- the graphite will be spheroidal and / or vermicular depending on the massiveness of the parts.
- Such a cast iron has properties of mechanical resistance and resistance to oxidation at least equivalent to those obtained with known spheroidal graphite irons based on nickel. It is understood, however, that insofar as they are produced without nickel from silicon or aluminum, they are significantly lower in cost and their production is not dependent on the supply of basic material considered strategic.
- the invention is based on a control of the equivalent silicon content in the cast iron.
- the numerical coefficient of aluminum (0.8) is chosen by iterative calculation so that the point AC1 is an increasing linear function of the "silicon-equivalent”. This expression, confirmed by the experiments carried out, shows that the contribution of aluminum to what could be called the "refractoriness" of cast iron is equal to about 80% of that of silicon.
- the equivalent silicon content is as follows: 900 to 950 ° C : 4.7 to 6%; 950 to 1000 ° C : 6 to 6.7%; above 1000 ° C : greater than 6.7%.
- the maximum equivalent silicon content cannot be greater than 7.1% if the cast iron is not to be too brittle.
- the total silicon content is between 3.9 and 5.3% and the aluminum content is between 0.5 and 2.5%.
- the tests carried out have shown that the best results are obtained for an aluminum content by weight of between 1.6 and 2.2%.
- cast iron In a particular example of cast iron according to the invention, it has the following composition: silicon 4.9%, aluminum 2.2%, molybdenum 1%, cobalt 1%, niobium 1% and carbon 3.1%.
- Tests, in particular of resistance to oxidation, of the GS fonts according to the invention and in particular of that which has the composition given in the example mentioned above, show that the properties of use are at least equal, if not better than those obtained with grades of austenitic spheroidal graphite cast iron with a high nickel content.
- the oxidizability of the cast iron is considerably reduced and the alloy is kept ferritic up to high temperatures, typically above 1000 ° C.
- the introduction of low molybdenum, cobalt or niobium contents allows an increase in the mechanical properties when hot compared to the usual grades, in particular as regards hot creep.
- the appended table makes it possible to compare the properties of four pig iron compositions in accordance with the invention with a known pig iron composition comprising 35.35% of nickel, 3.05% of chromium and 3.1% of silicon.
- the cast irons according to the invention have mechanical properties greater than or equal to those of the nickel cast iron and that the properties of resistance to oxidation are appreciably improved.
- the oxidisability properties are maintained but the mechanical properties are very significantly improved.
- the oxidisability properties are considerably improved.
- the inoculation of the liquid metal should be sufficiently powerful, mainly in the case of the production of thin parts. For this, we will practice, when necessary, post-inoculation in the foundry mold.

Abstract
