- This invention relates to a machine for dyeing yarns wound into skeins. being specially but not exclusively useful with such delicate yarns as natural silk, wool, viscose silk, mercerized cotton, and the like.
- the invention concerns a machine as above, wherein the skein dyeing process is carried out with the skeins hung on one or more skein holder arms and not immersed into a dyebath.
- a machine for dyeing skein-wound yarns embodying this invention comprises basically a dyeing chamber having at least one bearing wall; a plurality of tubular arms carried on said wall, extending into said dyeing chamber along a horizontal axis, and being communicated to a dyebath circulation pump outside the dyeing chamber, each tubular arm having a respective perforated skein holder portion, wherethrough the dyebath is delivered, which is delimited by oppositely located skein retainer caps; a skein shifter rod lying parallel to each skein holder arm and being journalled for rotation about the axis thereof to shift the rest of skeins on the respective perforated portion; and motor means for rotating said skein shifter rods.
- the skein holder arm is stationary, (it usually overhangs from the bearing wall of the machine) and has its respective skein shifter rod journalled on it through a pair of radially extending rod-like spacers.
- these rod-like spacers are secured with one end on the skein shifter rod, and with the other end on respective bearings mounted rotatively on the tubular skein holder arm coaxially therewith, at outboard locations relatively to the skein retainer caps.
- the drive means provided for the rotation of the skein shifter rods are connected each other in a laborious, complicated and expensive layout; further they are not reliable in respect to the synchronism between the rod rotation and the dyebath delivering.
- the underlying technical problem of this invention is to provide a machine as indicated for dyeing skein-wound yarns, which has such structural and operational features as to overcome the drawbacks of similar prior art machines, while being a more compact construction, easier to service, and most reliable function-wise.
- the solutive idea for such a technical problem is basically one of depending on the skein holder arms for the function of driving their respective skein shifter rods, additionally to their normal functions of holding the skeins and delivering the dyebath thereto.
- a machine as indicated characterized in that said skein shifter rods are fixedly mounted to their respective skein holder arms in mutually spaced relationship, and in that said arms are supported for free rotation on the bearing wall of the dyeing chamber, drive means being arranged to rotate said skein holder arms integral with their respective skein shifter rods.
- a machine for dyeing skein-wound yarns which comprises a dyeing chamber 2, made accessible from the front through an opening 4, wherewith a closing hood 5 is arranged to co-operate and which is delimited on the rear by a wall 6 made preferably of a stainless steel and adapted to define a compartment 7 in combination with a bearing wall 3 of said machine.
- the bottom 2a of said dyeing chamber 2 opens into a dyebath-collecting well 8 which is in liquid communication with the suction line 9 of a dyebath circulation pump 10 having a delivery line at 11.
- the dyeing machine of this invention has a plurality of tubular skein holder arms 12 extending along horizontal axes into the dyeing chamber 2, well above the bottom 2a thereof.
- the skein holder arms 12 are mounted for free rotation and to overhang from the bearing wall 3 of the chamber 2, as explained hereinafter.
- Each skein holder arm 12 has a pair of caps 13, 14 arranged to be rotatively integral therewith and adapted to retain yarn skeins 15 hung thereon.
- a portion of the skein holder arm 12 extending between the caps 13, 14 is perforated for dyebath delivery.
- the machine 1 of this invention includes a plurality of skein shifter rods 16, one for each skein holder arm 12, lying parallel to their respective arms 12 a predetermined distance therefrom.
- Said rods 16 are attached to their respective arms 12 and rotatively integral therewith.
- said skein shifter rods 16 are carried directly on caps 13, 14 of suitable size, and are made rigid in rotation therewith about the axes of the skein holder arms 12.
- Each skein holder arm 12 has an end portion 12a extended into the compartment 7 to become engaged into an opening 17 formed in the bearing wall 3, whereat it is in liquid communication with a dyebath intake conduit 18, in turn connected to the delivery line 11 of the pump 10, as explained hereinafter.
- each skein holder arm 12 is engaged by first and second sleeves 19, 20. respectively, which are aligned coaxially and wherewith it is made rotatively rigid.
- Sleeve 19 is engaged rotatively through an opening 21 formed in the wall 6, whereat a seal 22 is provided, such as a lip seal of the kind known as V-ring.
- the sleeve 19 is supported in a bearing 23 of suitable size, in turn carried on the bearing structure of the machine 1, within the compartment 7.
- Sleeve 20 is also supported in a respective bearing 24 carried on the wall 3 of said machine 1.
- dyebath flow-rate control and regulator devices Externally of the wall 3, at the locations of the openings 17 provided, there are carried respective dyebath flow-rate control and regulator devices, generally indicated at 26. These devices, known per se, and hence not described in detail herein, put the dyebath intake connections 18 in liquid communication with their respective skein holder arms 12 through their portions 12a.
- the machine 1 of this invention has the skein holder arms 12 supported in two rows (specifically, three skein holder arms per row) and substantially quincunx layout.
- said means comprise a horizontal drive shaft 27 which extends transverse to the skein holder arms 12 and is journalled about its axis.
- Screws 28 are respectively mounted on the drive shaft 27 at the location of each said skein holder arm 12 for rotation with said shaft. These screws 28 are in engagement each with a corresponding wheel 29, 29a keyed to a respective one of the skein holder arms 12.
- the drive shaft 27 can be powered in any conventional way.
- its end outside the dyeing chamber 2 may have a pulley 30 keyed to it which is drivingly connected to the motor 31 by a drive belt 32.

- tubular skein holder arms 12 in the bottom row are in liquid communication, through respective flow-rate control devices 26, with a dyebath header 33 supplied directly front the delivery line 11.
- the machine for dyeing skein-wound yarns according to this invention is uniquely compact in size, simplified in the mechanisms designed to perform the functions expected of the machine, highly reliable in providing such functions, and uniquely flexible in use by virtue of the number of beneficial features it affords and the range of technical demands it can fill.
- tubular skein holder arm of said machine also functions to transfer rotary motion to its respective rod; a quincunx layout is provided for the plural skein holder arms employed in the machine; and a common drive source is provided for all these arms.
