Definitions
- the present invention relates to a tile cutter with cutting wheel.
- Tile cutting tables are known which are constituted by a platform above which a longitudinal guide is mounted at a certain distance from said platform; a slider is slidably guided along said guide by means of a plurality of rolling ball bearings: a long lever is articulated above the slider and a pair of arms is articulated below it; a cutting wheel, usually made of a material such as tungsten carbide, is rotatably mounted between said arms; the lever and the arms are mutually connected substantially so as to define a parallelogram which is articulated by means of two lateral levers; a bridge curved in the shape of an inverted U is furthermore mounted on the slider and can be inverted from an inactive configuration to a configuration in which it rests on the tile below the level of the wheel (in this condition, by actuating the lever one presses on the tile to the sides of the cut in order to break it).
- Said known tile cutters have some shortcomings with regard to the fact that the levers connected so as to define an articulated parallelogram are arranged outside the slider, and since they must pass over the longitudinal guide, they are rather bulky and significantly spaced from the line where the cutting and breaking force is applied; in addition to this, the articulated bridge for breaking the tile is also external and has a considerable bulk which is such that sometimes, due to interference with the supports of the guides, it does not allow to work along the entire stroke of the slider and also interferes with the operator's hands.
- known tile cutters are usually provided, at one end, with a ruler along which an L-shaped abutment element can be arranged and allows to position a tile straight in order to perform straight cuts at different distances from the edge of the tiles: the arrangement of said L-shaped elements does not allow to perform incision and breakage of the tile with any inclination.
- the technical aim of the present invention is to obviate the above problems, by providing a tile cutter with cutting wheel whose active components have a minimum bulk in order to provide clear viewing of, and access to, the cutting point on the part of the operator, which are extremely compact with respect to the guiding slider, and which are aligned with the applied forces, said cutter having an extremely effective and functional L-shaped abutment element which allows to perform cuts orientated in any manner.
- an object of the present invention is to provide a simple structure which is relatively easy to execute in practice, is safe in use, effective in operation, relatively modest in cost and, differently from known tools, can also be used comfortably by left-handed operators.
- the tile cutter with cutting wheel according to the invention is generally designated by the reference numeral 1.
- the tile cutter 1 comprises a substantially rectangular platform 2 with rounded corners which has, in a median position, in a known manner, a longitudinal abutment ridge 3 for cutting and breaking the tile: on one side of the ridge, the platform supports, with compression springs interposed, a half-part 4 which is provided, in an upward position, with a pad of a material such as rubber; two rectangular sectors 5 and 6 are supported on the other side of the ridge, with compression springs interposed, and are also provided, in an upward position, with respective pads made of a rubber-like material.
- a transverse seat 7 which is open upwardly and in which a ruler 8 can be inserted snugly;
- the cross-section of said ruler is substantially rectangular, with an upper longitudinal opening 9;
- a lever 10 is articulated at the inlet of the seat 7 and is provided with a tooth 11 which can be inserted snugly in a retention notch 12 defined to the side of the ruler 8: the rotation of the lever allows to couple and uncouple the ruler 8 with respect to the platform.
- a block 13 is slidingly mounted inside the ruler, and a body 14 is slidingly mounted above said ruler; the lower surface of said body 14 has a protruding ridge 15 which is suitable to snugly enter the opening 9; the body 14 is crossed by the threaded stem of a key 17, and said stem is screwed in a threaded hole of the block 13; the screwing action of said stem is suitable to rigidly lock the body 14 to the ruler 8: advantageously, the front 18 of the block 13 is inclined and the bottom of the ruler is provided with a graduated scale 19.
- Two threaded holes are provided above the body 14 for the screwing of an articulation bolt 20 and of a key 21 for locking an L-shaped element 22 which is provided with a hole 23a for the bolt 20 and with a curved slot 23b for the key 21; the edge of the L-shaped element 22, when it is orientated parallel to the ridge 3, is spaced from said ridge by the amount indicated by the reading of the graduated scale 19 performed by the inclined front 18 of the block 13.
- the mounted L-shaped element is locked about its own axis, it is possible to perform cuts inclined in any manner on the tiles: when the tile is orientated at 45 o , the direct indication of the distance between the corner of the tile and the cutting line (ridge 3) is obtained on the graduated scale.
- pairs of holes are provided at each end of the platform 2 for locking, by means of related bolts, a measurement ruler 8a which is mounted at one end of the platform or at the other depending on whether the user is right- or left-handed.
- stems 24 which extend from the underside of the half-part 4 and of the sectors 5 and 6 and on which related compression springs 25 are centered; said stems pass through holes of the platform, and are provided with respective nuts 26 for limiting their ascent stroke which are screwed below them.
- the bases 27a and 28a of two respective supports 27 and 28 are fixed by means of screws to the ends of the ridge 3, on top of the platform 2; in an upward position, said supports define respective forks 27b, 28b in which the ends of a longitudinal guide 29 are inserted; said longitudinal guide has a flattened rectangular cross-section and is fixed to the forks by means of respective bolts and nuts 30.
- a slider 31 is mounted along the guide 29 and is defined by means of two half-shells 32a and 32b which are substantially mirror-symmetrical and are fixed to one another by bolts and nuts designated by 33; respective seats 34a, 35a, 36a, 34b, 35b, 36b are defined in the half-shells 32a, 32b for six related bearings 37 with related central pivots whose axes are vertical; three of said bearings rest on one side of the guide 29 and three rest on another side thereof.
- the bearings in the seats 35b, 36b are mounted at the two ends of a single pivot; in order to adjust the lateral play between the bearings and the guide 29, it has been thought to make the supporting pins of the bearings of one side movable and to push them toward the guide by means of a grub screw 36c, which is central to the pivot of the bearings of the seats 35b, 36b and is screwed in a central threaded hole defined in the half-shell 32a between the two seats, and by means of two grub screws 34c, 34d which are screwed in holes defined at the sides of the seat 34b; said grub screws can be locked to the half-shells by screwing respective lock nuts.
- Two shafts, designated by 38 and 39, for two bearings 40 and 41 which rest against the lower face of the guide 29 are furthermore supported between the half-shells; a shaft 42 is mounted at the top of the slider 31 and supports a rolling bearing 43 which rests on the upper face of the guide 29; in order to adjust the vertical play between the guide and said bearings, it has been thought to mount the bearing 40 on an eccentric element 45 which is rigidly associated with, and central to, the shaft 38 and to thread the two ends of the shaft 38 for the screwing of two nuts 46 for rotationally locking the shaft to the half-shells: two hexagonal recesses 47 are defined in the heads of the shaft 38 and allow to rotate the shaft by means of Allen wrenches in order to rest the bearing against the guide, thereby eliminating play.
- the fork-shaped end 48a of the lever arm 48 is rotatably mounted on the shaft 42 and ends with a spherical knob 49; proximate to the end 48a, the arm 48 has a transverse hole for the articulation, by means of a bolt-and-nut assembly 50, of the upper ends of two respective lateral links (one of which is indicated by 51a) and which have, at their lower ends, respective pivots (one of which is indicated by 52a).
- the half-shells 32a, 32b define guides 53 for the vertical sliding of a frame 54 which is constituted by two sides 55a, 55b and by a cross-member 56 which are arranged substantially so as to define an H: in their upper part, the sides of the frame are crossed by holes 57 for coupling to the pivots 52a, 52b.
- the sides 55a, 55b of the frame are crossed by holes 58a, 58b for the insertion of a pivot 59 of a block 60: the ends of the pivot 59 are guided in two vertical slots 61 of the half-shells 32, 33.
- the block 60 has an upper portion 61 which is crossed by a hole 62 for the pivot 59, which is rigidly coupled to said block by means of a grub screw which is screwed in a threaded hole at right angles to the hole 62: an actuation lever 59a is keyed to one of the ends of the pivot 59 and allows to rotate the block 60 manually in one direction or the other.
- the block 60 defines two parallel arms (one of which is referenced by 64b) which are slightly spaced from one another and which are crossed by respective holes 65 for a shaft 66 which is parallel to the pivot 59 and on which a cutting wheel 67, made of a material such as tungsten carbide, is mounted so as to be able to rotate freely; the block 60 defines, laterally with respect to the arms, two lateral shoes 68a, 68b which are slightly spaced from one another and which have two soles 69 whose base is substantially square.
- the arrangement of the ruler 8 and of the rotating L-shaped element in a median position so that the graduated scale has its zero line at the ridge 3 allows to easily cut the tiles with any inclination and at any distance from the sides or from the corner of the tile, easily measuring the dimensions of the cut to be made.
- the tile cutter according to the invention can be easily reversed for use by left-handed persons: in this regard, it is sufficient to mount the guide 29 in the forks 27b, 28b so that it is rotated through 180 o about a vertical axis, move the actuation lever 59a of the block from one side of the slider to the other and turn the L-shaped element 21 face down.
