Abstract

The subject of the invention is a process intended for modifying or flavouring the primary or secondary smoke of smoking articles such as cigarettes, cigars and similar articles as well as the mixture intended for smoking, for example in a pipe or in the form of a cigarette, by applying to the wrapping of these articles at least one solution of the flavouring or modifying substances which are transferred to the article in the vapour phase in the confined atmosphere of the packaging of these articles. According to the invention, a product which is nonvolatile at room temperature and has a vapour pressure less than that of the flavouring substance to be deposited is used as solvent.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for modifying or flavoring primary or secondary smoke resulting from the combustion of one or more components used in the composition of smoking products based or not on tobacco, such as cigarettes, cigars and the like as well as the mixture of components, intended to be smoked, for example in a pipe or in the form of a cigarette.

It is necessary to understand by envelope, either the envelope of the product like the paper of the tobacco tobacco sausage of the cigarette or the cap or the under-cap of the cigar, or the support constituting the packaging itself of the product to be smoked that is ie the label or cardboard case of the package in direct contact with the smoking mixture or the aluminum combination generally wrapping cigarettes.

Processes of this type are already known but in which the flavoring substance is always molten menthol or an alcoholic or aqueous solution.

The document "Leffingwell" recalls that it is known to incorporate flavors in or on the paper forming the envelope of a cigarette. It provides for the use of aroma precursors of low volatility which block the aromas until the moment of smoking.

In patent CH-A-662042 the flavors are solvated with a non-volatile solvent at room temperature and are applied to the filter where they are blocked until the moment of smoking.

Contrary to the aim sought in these prior documents, the invention aims not to block the aromatic substances until smoking but to be transferred to the product in the gaseous phase in the confined atmosphere of the envelope or packaging of this product.

To this end, the invention provides for applying the flavoring or modifying substances to the envelope of the products in the form of a solution whose solvent is non-volatile at room temperature and has a vapor pressure lower than that of the aromatic substance to be deposited.

The method of the invention is applicable to any desired aromatic or modifying substance, volatile at room temperature, and thus makes it possible to produce products with different taste characteristics from the same smoking mixture.

By way of non-limiting example of such substances, mention may be made of spice extracts such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves; flowers, such as acacia, jasmine rose; fruit extracts such as lime, orange, cherry, apricot and identical or different natural aromatic molecules such as benzaldehyde, menthol, anisol, carvone, anethole.

The invention makes it possible to maintain the aromatic substances in solvated form on the paper until the moment of their transfer from the envelope to the product to be smoked in the confined atmosphere.

De préférence le solvant aura une tension de vapeur inférieure à 10-1 mm de Hg à 20°C ou un point d'ébullition supérieur à 180°C.Preferably the solvent will have a vapor pressure of less than 10 -1 mm Hg at 20 ° C or a boiling point greater than 180 ° C.

  • le propylène glycol ;
  • le triéthylène glycol ;
  • le butylène glycol ;
  • un polyéthylène glycol ;
  • un polypropylène glycol.
Very good results are obtained by using, as solvent, a hydroxylated or polyhydroxylated product, alone or as a mixture, for example:
  • propylene glycol;
  • triethylene glycol;
  • butylene glycol;
  • polyethylene glycol;
  • polypropylene glycol.

In a preferred manner, it will be chosen to deposit the solution by a gravure process. In this case, it has been found that good results are obtained when the viscosity of the solution is greater than 20 centipoise.

In a variant implementation of the process, it is possible to deposit different aromatic or modifying solutions, these solutions being or not compatible with each other. It is therefore possible in particular to use a gravure printing process known as spotted transfer consisting of depositing on limited surfaces, contiguous or not or possibly overlapping completely or partially, successively two or more solutions.

The flavoring according to the invention is simple to implement, economical in raw material, usable for the manufacture of small series of products having different aromatic notes. The flavor is transferred to the material of the smoking product in the gas phase. Smoking reveals significant differences compared to the same product to which the same flavor was added by the methods known from the prior art.

By way of non-limiting example, some examples of implementation of the invention are given below.

Exemple 1Example 1

On prépare 300 g de solution aromatique en solubilisant 40 g de menthol et 30 g de vanilline dans 230 g d'anéthol.300 g of aromatic solution are prepared by dissolving 40 g of menthol and 30 g of vanillin in 230 g of anethole.

The solution obtained has a dynamic viscosity of 5 centipoise. To this solution is added a mixture of 100 g, on an equal weight basis, of two Lutrol brand polyethylene glycols, manufactured by BASF and referenced E 400 and E 1500 respectively.

On obtient 400 g d'une solution de viscosité égale à 20 centipoises.400 g of a solution with a viscosity equal to 20 centipoise are obtained.

This solution is applied to the muslin of an aluminum combination by rotogravure printing at a rate of 3.5 g / m 2 . The coated handset is immediately wound up in the form of ready-to-use reels on a packaging machine. After three months of storage in a package waterproof plastic, we made packages with this handset and cigarettes made with an un-sauced blond mixture.

After a fortnight's wait, the packages were opened and the cigarettes given to a tasting panel. Overall, the aroma of the smoke was found to be distinctive in the anise note with a sweet, fresh and sweet flavor.

Exemple 2Example 2

The solution obtained is deposited by the same means on cigarette paper of 25 g / m 2 basis weight at the rate of 2 g / m 2 . Cigarettes, made with this paper and a mixture of blond tobacco without sauce, are submitted a few days after making to a panel of tasters. The aroma of the smoke is considered to be distinctive in the spicy cinnamon note with a sweet and sweet flavor.

Exemple 3Example 3

The mixture, which has a viscosity of more than 100 centipoise, is added to 100 g of propylene glycol. A solution developing 40 centipoise is obtained which is deposited, at a rate of 8 g / m 2 , by rotogravure printing on a strip of reconstituted tobacco 120 m thick, intended for the manufacture of cigar dolls' undercoats. Although the tripe is not initially flavored, experts judge the smoke of these products typed in the noted coffee with a slight aromatic bitterness.
