Definitions
- Betaines of the aforementioned formula in which R1 is an alkyl radical with 8 to 14 carbon atoms or whose radical R4CO is the acyl radical of a fatty acid with 8 to 12 carbon atoms, have in recent years become increasingly important for the production of personal cleansers. They combine excellent cleaning properties with good skin tolerance.
- the betaines form a stable, dense foam in aqueous solution, which does not collapse even in the presence of soap.
- betaines are described in many patents, of which US Pat. No. 3,225,074 is named as a representative.
- the corresponding tertiary amine of the general formula II is reacted with the alkali salt of an ⁇ -halocarboxylic acid, generally the sodium salt of chloroacetic acid.
- the reaction preferably takes place in an aqueous medium.
- the alkali chloride formed in the reaction remains in the solution and is not removed.
- the betaines of the prior art are usually marketed in the form of their 30% strength by weight aqueous solutions. These are essentially betaines which have been obtained by quaternization of fatty alkyl dialkylamines or fatty acid amidamines whose fatty alkyl or fatty acid residue has on average 12 to 14 carbon atoms.
- the greater the chain length of the alkyl radical or of the fatty acid mixture used to produce the betaine the more the viscosity of the betaine solutions increases with increasing concentration. It was therefore only possible to produce low-concentration aqueous solutions with about 2 to 5% by weight betaine from betaines whose acyl radical R4CO is derived from higher fatty acids, such as stearic acid.
- This relates to a process for the production of a concentrated aqueous surface-active preparation, which as the active ingredient is a mixture of at least two non-homologous ones surface-active substances, each of the two substances being present in an amount of at least 5% by weight, based on the mixture, and the mixture being capable of forming a liquid G phase
- at least one of the surface-active substances being formed by a Reaction can be prepared in aqueous solution from a starting material which is liquid under the reaction conditions and does not cause any significant degradation of the other surface-active substance in the mixture, and the preparation is formed by at least one of the starting materials in the corresponding surface-active substance in In the presence of at least one of the other surfactant component, and this conversion is carried out in the presence of sufficient amounts of water to keep the reaction mixture in a liquid state and to obtain a final preparation which is at least predominantly in the G phase.
- Example 2 of British patent application 2 022 125 A 797 g of a 70% solution of sodium ether lauryl sulfate, which is in the G phase, are combined with 442 g of a C12 / C14-alkyldimethylamine heated with 209 g of chloroacetic acid in 140 g of water, the pH of the mixture being kept at 7.8 ⁇ 0.2 by adding NaOH solution. So here a betaine is produced in the presence of an alkyl ether sulfate.
- the product contains 63% surfactant, the weight ratio of betaine to anionic surfactant is 1: 1.
- the product is liquid and is in the G phase.
- the invention is thus concerned with the technical problem of flowable, pourable and thus meterable aqueous preparations of betaines as well of the general formula I, the radical R1 or the radical R4CO- has 16 or more carbon atoms.
- anionic surfactants are added to the reaction mixture before the quaternization reaction in such amounts that the finished solution contains 1 to 10% by weight of anionic surfactants.
- the finished solution preferably contains 2 to 5% by weight of anionic surfactants.
- an aqueous betaine dispersion is obtained.
- the betaine is thus in the form of small particles as the outer phase in the dispersion.
- Product according to the invention Dispersion with G phase white dispersion transparent to slightly cloudy gel stable in a wide range of concentrations stable G phase only within a very narrow concentration range shows behavior of a Newtonian fluid shows behavior of a thixotropic gel
- Tertiary amines whose R 1 radical is an alkyl radical having 18 to 22 carbon atoms are particularly preferably used in the process according to the invention. The same applies to the rest R4.
- radicals R1 are the radicals C18H36-, C20H22- and C22H25-, the radicals R4CO- the acyl radicals of stearic acid, arachic acid, behenic acid.
- Alkali, ammonium or amine salts of alkyl sulfates, alkyl ether sulfates, alkylarylsulfonates, ⁇ -olefin sulfonates or sulfosuccinic acid semiesters are particularly preferred as anionic surfactants.
- examples include lauryl sulfate, polyoxyethylene-3-lauryl ether sulfate, Na-dodecylbenzyl sulfonate. Their concentration, based on the preparation, is about 1 to a maximum of 5% by weight.
- the product is a white, flowable dispersion with a viscosity of 3000 to 5000 mPas at 25 ° C.
- This mixture is allowed to react for 10 hours at 95 to 98 ° C with stirring and then cool.
- the mixture is allowed to react at 95 to 98 ° C for 10 hours and then cooled.
- 187 g of a flowable, white dispersion of the following composition are obtained: 22.9% by weight of stearic acid betaine 2.0% by weight sodium lauryl ether sulfate 3.5% by weight sodium chloride 71.6% by weight water.
- the viscosity of the dispersion is ⁇ 4000 mPas at room temperature.
- a flowable, white dispersion of a stearic acid betaine having the following composition is also obtained: 22.9% by weight of stearic acid betaine 5.0% by weight sodium lauryl ether sulfate 3.5% by weight sodium chloride 68.6% by weight water.
- the viscosity of the dispersion is ⁇ 2000 mPas at room temperature.
- the table shows that the dispersions obtained according to the invention are flowable. If the anionic surfactants are replaced by nonionic surfactants, products which are no longer flowable or gelled are obtained.

Description
-
- R¹
42,6 g Stearinsäurebetain = 22,8 Gew.-% 6,5 g Natriumlaurylethersulfat = 3,5 Gew.-% 6,5 g Natriumchlorid = 3,5 Gew.-% 130,7 g Wasser = 70,2 Gew.-%
12,8 g Natriummonochloracetat
13,4 g Natriumlaurylethersulfat (28 gew.-%ig in H₂O)
