Description

The invention relates to an inking unit with a printing cylinder and an applicator roller according to the preamble of claim 1.

Inking units are already known in which the ink is applied by means of a slowly rotating application roller, which rotates within a paint application hood in a distribution channel. By arranging the application roller appropriately on the printing cylinder, the jacket of the application roller and the printing cylinder form a wedge groove which ends in a narrow gap, the size of which can be adjusted depending on the desired ink film thickness. It is known to design the jacket of the application roller as a felt cloth, which absorbs some of the paint and has a rough surface. The ink running off from the printing cylinder is collected in a trough located below the printing cylinder, the so-called ink fountain, and fed to a collecting tank. Excess ink is wiped off using an adjustable squeegee before printing on the web. This known prior art has the disadvantage that the ink cannot be applied uniformly to the printing roller by the application roller. Depending on the gap width set, the ink layer is to be distributed evenly over the printing roller, but in reality it is observed that no uniform ink application can be achieved on the printing roller, including the print quality achieved also suffers.

A generic inking unit is known from JP-A-59127764. There, the application roller also has a smooth outer surface and the application roller can be adjusted without a gap to the printing cylinder during the ink application.

From US-A-3,283,712 it is already known from a different in the structure of generic inking unit that the peripheral speed of the application roller is varied compared to that of the printing cylinder and that the contact pressure of the application roller on the printing cylinder is varied accordingly.

When the inking unit is designed in accordance with this prior art, there is a risk that as little ink is applied to the printing cylinder that the doctor blade runs dry. This is particularly to be feared if a comparatively thin layer of ink is applied, which due to the relatively high peripheral speed of the printing cylinder is thrown off into the collecting trough arranged below the printing cylinder. This dry running of the doctor blade leads to undesirable wear.

The object of the invention is to develop a generic inking unit in such a way that the wear which occurs as a result of the doctor blade possibly running dry is largely prevented.

This object is achieved in a further development of the generic state of the art by the characterizing features of claim 1. Accordingly, a shell-like sheet is arranged underneath the pressure roller and can be delivered to it. The bowl-like sheet can be placed tangentially on the printing cylinder in such a way that the removed ink cannot be thrown off. This will make the squeegee dry and thereby conditional wear prevented. The shell-like sheet metal can on the one hand be articulated to a fixed pivot point and can be pivoted about this by means of a handle. This enables simple handling by the operating personnel.

In a preferred embodiment, depending on the material properties of the paint to be applied, the ink application result can be optimized by varying the contact pressure of the application roller or by varying its peripheral speed. In order to achieve a uniform ink application, it has been found to be particularly advantageous that the peripheral speed of the application roller during the ink application is lower than that of the printing cylinder. The contact pressure between the application roller and the pressure cylinder can be variably adjustable.

According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the axis of rotation of the applicator roller is arranged above that of the printing cylinder. As a result, the circulation path of the printing roller is kept as small as possible after the web has been printed until the ink is applied again.

This can advantageously prevent drying of the ink residues within the suction cups of the printing cylinder, since due to the relatively high peripheral speed, the distance shortened by this teaching, which the suction cups have to cover after the ink has been given to the medium to be printed, is quickly covered and on Drying out is not to be feared even with highly volatile paint.

Further details and advantages of the invention are explained with reference to an embodiment shown in the drawing. The figure shows a schematic sectional view through an embodiment of the inking unit according to the invention.

The inking unit 10 has a printing cylinder 14 in a known manner, to which a web 28 to be printed is pressed by means of a counter-pressure roller 26. In the figure, the direction of rotation of the printing cylinder is indicated by arrow a. An application roller 12 is attached to the printing cylinder. This has a coated, smooth outer surface 16, preferably made of rubber or plastic, and can be set against the printing cylinder 14 with variable pressure. The direction of rotation of the application roller 12 is indicated by the arrow b. The axis of rotation 18 of the application roller 12 is arranged above the axis of rotation of the printing cylinder 14 when viewed from the bottom. Of course, the applicator roller 12 is slidably mounted in the machine frame in a manner not shown, so that it can be adjusted to printing cylinders of different diameters.

The ink feed 30 is arranged above the application roller 12 in a manner known per se. The ink runs into the wedge groove formed between the application roller 12 and the printing cylinder 14 and is essentially pressed into the suction cups on the surface of the printing cylinder 14 by means of the application roller 12. Depending on the properties of the ink to be applied, the ink application can be varied by varying the peripheral speed of the application roller 12 compared to that of the printing cylinder and by varying the contact pressure of the application roller on the printing cylinder. Good results are generally achieved if the peripheral speed of the application roller is lower than that of the printing cylinder 14.

A trough-shaped ink fountain 32 with an outlet 34 is arranged in the usual manner below the printing cylinder. The applicator roller 12 is essentially opposite on the other side of the ink fountain a doctor blade 36 in a conventional design to the printing cylinder 14, which serves to excess ink on the Squeegee cylinder off.

Between the printing cylinder 14 and the trough-shaped ink fountain 32, a shell-like sheet 20 that can be pivoted about a pivot point 22 is arranged. This shell-like sheet 20 underpins the pressure cylinder 14, wherein it is connected via a lever mechanism 35 which engages near its free end to a handle 24 in such a way that when the handle 24 is deflected in the double arrow direction c it carries out a corresponding pivoting movement in the double arrow direction d. In a desired position, the shell-like sheet 20 can be fixed by a conventional locking mechanism, for example a locking screw (not shown in the figure). By means of the adjustable cup-like sheet metal, it can now be prevented that the ink located on the printing roller outside of the suction cups is completely thrown off into the ink fountain 32 and thereby the doctor blade 36 runs dry. Thus, the shell-like sheet 20, which in its area near the pivot point 22 is preferably designed as a flat plate, as shown in the figure, can be used in a particularly advantageous manner to prevent any wear caused by the doctor blade 36 running dry.
