Description

The invention relates to a device for connecting a coaxial cable to a printed circuit, without preparing the cable, that is to say without having to strip the central conductor and the shielding braid.

Conventionally, a coaxial cable is connected to a printed circuit by means of a male coaxial plug and a female coaxial socket, the plug being fixed to one end of the coaxial cable, after prior stripping of the central conductor and the braid of shielding, and the base being fixed on the printed circuit by welds. This known connection device is relatively expensive, since it comprises numerous parts, and its assembly is labor-intensive since it requires preparation of the cable.

The object of the invention is to propose a device which remedies these drawbacks and which can be mounted without specific tools.

  • un conducteur dont une extrémité comporte une pointe et dont l'autre extrémité est soudable sur le circuit imprimé;
  • des moyens pour guider le câble selon une trajectoire hélicoïdale dont la direction de translation est dans l'axe du câble, et dans l' axe de la pointe, pour enfoncer la pointe dans le toron du conducteur central;
According to the invention, a device for connecting a coaxial cable to a printed circuit, without preparing the cable; the cable comprising a central conductor consisting of a strand, an insulating layer, a shielding braid, and a peripheral insulating sheath,
is characterized in that it comprises:
  • a conductor, one end of which has a tip and the other end of which is solderable to the printed circuit;
  • means for guiding the cable along a helical path, the direction of translation of which is in the axis of the cable, and in the axis of the tip, for driving the tip into the strand of the central conductor;
  • a shielding cover surrounding the means for guiding and comprising a fork-shaped cutout constituting an insulation displacement contact, to be crimped onto the cable to pass through its sheath and pinch the braid, the cover being connectable to the ground of the printed circuit by weldable pins.

The device thus characterized allows assembly without preparation of the cable. The central conductor does not need to be stripped since it is penetrated by a metal point driven along the axis of the cable. The braid does not need to be stripped since the insulating sheath is crossed by an insulating displacement contact. The assembly is carried out without specific tools, thanks to the means for guiding the cable, which ensure penetration of the tip along the axis of the central conductor, and thanks to the fact that the insulation displacement contact is constituted by the song of a cut in the shielding cover, which allows this contact to be crimped onto the cable by pressure exerted by hand on the shielding cover.

  • un support en matière plastique, comportant un trou cylindrique ayant un diamètre égal au diamètre du câble, et un axe de symétrie de révolution confondu avec l'axe de la pointe;
According to a particular embodiment, the means for guiding the cable comprise:
  • a plastic support, comprising a cylindrical hole having a diameter equal to the diameter of the cable, and an axis of symmetry of revolution coincident with the axis of the tip;
  • a blade nut, inserted into a slot in the support, this slot having a plane orthogonal to the axis of the tip, and having a helical opening whose diameter is slightly less than the diameter of the cable, so that the cable sheath can be screwed in this opening, the latter being arranged opposite the cylindrical hole of the support.

The device thus characterized is easy to assemble, since the assembly of the cable consists in: inserting the blade nut into a slot in the support, then screwing the cable through the blade nut and through the cylindrical hole of the support to drive the point in the core conductor's strand.

According to a particular embodiment, the shielding cover consists of a single weldable sheet, cut to include a central plate and four peripheral plates; and folded to fold the four peripheral plates orthogonally to the central plate, on the same side with respect to the latter.

The device thus characterized is particularly easy and inexpensive to produce.

  • la figure 1 représente une vue d'ensemble d'un exemple de réalisation du dispositif selon l'invention, avec le câble coaxial et le circuit imprimé à raccorder, le capot étant démonté;
  • la figure 2 représente une vue en coupe de cet exemple de réalisation;
The invention will be better understood and other details will appear with the aid of the description below and the accompanying figures:
  • Figure 1 shows an overview of an embodiment of the device according to the invention, with the coaxial cable and the printed circuit to be connected, the cover being removed;
  • Figure 2 shows a sectional view of this exemplary embodiment;
  • Figures 3, 4, 5 show separately: the shielding cover, the blade nut, and the support, of this exemplary embodiment.

The embodiment shown in Figure 1 connects a coaxial cable 4 to a printed circuit board 5. The hidden parts are not shown, for clarity. This exemplary embodiment comprises: a shielding cover 1, consisting of a sheet of nickel silver 0.3 mm thick, cut and folded; a blade nut 2, consisting of a nickel silver blade; and a support 3, molded from polyamide.

The blade nut 2 is inserted into a slot 29 in the support 3. The cover 1 is shown disassembled, to reveal the support 3. When the cover 1 is mounted, it surrounds the support 3 to form an electrical shielding.

Les picots 7 sont soudés sur des pastilles de circuit imprimé, situées sur la face opposée à celle supportant le support 3.To facilitate mounting of the cover 1, it is guided by four faces of the support 3 which are orthogonal to the plate 5, such as the faces 31 and 33. For this, the dimensions of the support 3 are slightly smaller than the dimensions of the interior of the cover 1. One of the faces of the cover 1 has a cutout, 6-8, which constitutes an insulation displacement contact. When the cover 1 is mounted, this cutout is crimped onto the cable 4. The cover 1 has four welding pins, such as the pin 7. When the cover 1 is mounted, the four welding pins are inserted into the holes of the printed circuit board 5, such as holes 30 and 32. The pins 7 are welded to printed circuit pads, located on the face opposite to that supporting the support 3.

In this figure, it appears that the cable 4 comprises: a central conductor 11 consisting of a strand of copper filaments; an insulating layer 12 covering the strand; a shielding braid 13 covering the layer 12; and a peripheral insulating sheath 14. The cable 4 is arranged parallel to the plate 5, through a helical opening of the blade nut 2 and through a cylindrical hole 28 in the support 3. The cable 4 has been screwed into the blade nut 2 to drive a point 27 into the strand of the central conductor 11.

When the cable 4 has been screwed to the bottom of the hole 28, it is completely immobilized by the blade nut 2, which is retained both by the walls of the slot 29 and by the cable 4 itself. The tip 27 is one end of a metal rod 26 partially embedded in the support 3, the point 27 protruding from the bottom of the hole 28. The other end of this metal rod 26 constitutes a weldable pin 22 which passes through a hole 21 of the plate of the printed circuit 5, and which is welded on a patch 20. This metal rod 26 is bent at right angles, so that the axis of the tip 27 is parallel to the plane of the plate 5 while the axis weldable pin 22 is orthogonal to this plate.

In this figure, it appears that the support 3 comprises a positioning pin, cylindrical, 19, fitted into a hole 18 in the plate 5. The pin 19 makes it possible to position the support 3 on the plate 5, during the mounting operations. FIG. 2 also shows two of the welding pins, 7 and 23, of the cover 1. They pass through holes 16 and 25 of the plate 5, and are welded on pads 17 and 24 connected to the ground of the printed circuit, by connections not shown.

It is made of a single sheet of nickel silver, cut to include a central plate 37, and four peripheral plates, such as the plates 38 and 39. The four peripheral plates are folded orthogonally with respect to the plate 37, on the same side with respect to the latter, so that the plate 37 constitutes the top of the cover while the peripheral plates constitute four sides of the cover. The peripheral plate 38 includes the fork-shaped cutout, 6-8, constituting the insulation displacement contact. This cutout includes a mouth 6 having a greater width of the cable 4, then decreasing to a groove 8 having a constant width less than the diameter of the cable 4, and equal to the diameter of the braid 13, so that when the cover 1 is crimped onto the cable 4, the edge of the cutout 6-8 crosses the sheath 14 and clamps the braid shielding 13. The plate 30, as well as the symmetrical plate with respect to the central plate 31, is extended by two tabs constituting welding pins, such as the pin 7.

It is constituted by a piece of nickel silver sheet, pierced with a helical opening 40 having a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the cable 4, and comprising a cut 41 perpendicular to the edge of the opening 40. The two edges of the cut 41 are slightly apart to give a helical shape to the opening 40. The cable 4 is screwed into the opening 40, after the blade nut 2 has been placed in the slot 29 of the support 3. The edge of the opening 40 bites and slightly deforms the sheath 14, because the latter has a certain elasticity.

It consists of a block of molded polyamide, having a generally parallelepidic shape, comprising a slot 29 whose plane is perpendicular to the axis of the hole 28, and comprising a cutout 42 in the form of U. The cutout 42 constitutes a recess having a generally planar shape and parallel to the plane of the slot 29. It is intended to facilitate the molding of the support 3, more particularly for molding the slot 29.

The scope of the invention is not limited to the embodiment described above. Many variant embodiments are within the reach of those skilled in the art. For example, it is possible to produce the support in polytetrafluoroethylene, instead of polyamide, the choice of material being a function of the characteristic impedance of the cable, and a function of tolerable dielectric losses. The dimensions are also chosen according to the characteristic impedance of the cable to be connected.
