Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an iron with a coating on the sliding surface that reduces friction and / or adhesion to textiles.
A number of requirements are imposed on irons (currently exclusively with electric heating), but all of them have not yet been satisfactorily met. Firstly, their weight should be as low as possible to prevent rapid fatigue of the person handling them; For this purpose, a production from light metal offers itself, which is also sufficiently corrosion-resistant to withstand the attack of the steam directed at the ironing material by nozzles attached in the sliding surface. However, light metal has only a low hardness, so that a sliding surface made therefrom is regularly scratched after some time of use. A rough surface, however, tends to adhere to the processed textiles and thus also make handling more difficult. Protective layers made of a harder metal, e.g. B. nickel, also have an undesirable roughness in the original state and must be polished in a complex process. Layers of polytetraethylene fluoride, which are very smooth in themselves and have little tendency to stick, are in turn exposed to the risk of being destroyed by accidental overheating.
The object of the present invention is an iron which is provided with a sliding surface which is both corrosion-resistant and smooth enough to be able to be moved over the surface of the customary textiles without major difficulties; this smoothness should not be due to the intended Wear and damage occurring during use can be impaired.
This object is achieved according to the invention in that the coating of the sliding surface consists of a hard material layer of 5 microns thick. Such thin layers increase the weight of the iron barely noticeably, can be produced with the desired low roughness (R z <3 µm) and are scratch-resistant against all loads to be expected even when used improperly. They are also completely corrosion-resistant themselves; since the base material of the sliding surface is also corrosion-resistant, the fact that hard material layers in this thickness still have pores through which an attack on the base material could otherwise occur is of no importance. Hard material layers are also heat-resistant far beyond the temperatures in question here.
In a special embodiment of the invention, the coating is applied in an arc plasma process. Such methods, as have been described in their bases in US-A-3 625 848, offer an inexpensive way of providing metallic objects of almost any size and shape with a coating which results from the reaction of one or more metallic substances Arc discharge in the plasma state of substances with certain components of a gas mixture present in the coating chamber occurs.
In a special embodiment of the invention, the coating consists of titanium nitride TiN. This coating material has been used in a variety of ways to coat (cutting) tools and other objects that are subject to abrasive wear. However, ironing textiles is not a burden of this type. As a further, achieved with the subject of the invention, if there is also an advantage not in the technical field that the titanium nitride also gives the iron a decorative effect due to its coloration, which is hardly distinguishable from gold.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing. It shows an iron, which consists of a body 1, a handle 2 and a
