Bügeleisen mit hartstoffbeschichteter GleitflächeIron with hard-coated sliding surface
The present invention relates to an iron with a coating on the sliding surface that reduces friction and/or adhesion to tiles.
Irons (currently only those with electric heating) have to meet a number of requirements, all of which are still satisfactorily met. Firstly, their heat should be as low as possible in order to prevent rapid fatigue of the iron. To prevent injuries to the person, it is best to use a light metal that is sufficiently corrosion - resistant to withstand the attack of the steam directed at the ironing material through nozzles fitted in the sliding surface. However, light metal has only a low hardness, so that a sliding surface made from it is usually worn out after a certain period of use. A rough surface, however, tends to stick to the textiles being treated, thus making handling more difficult. Protective layers made of a harder metal, e.g. nickel, applied to the sliding surface also have an undesirable roughness in their original state and must be polished in a complex process. Layers made of polytetraethylene fluoride, which are very smooth and have little tendency to stick, are at risk of being destroyed by accidental overheating.
The object of the present invention is an iron that is provided with a sliding surface that is both corrosion-resistant and smooth enough to be moved over the surface of common textiles without great difficulty; this smoothness should not be impaired by

This problem is solved according to the invention in that the coating of the sliding surface consists of a hard material layer 5 μm thick. Such thin layers hardly increase the weight of the iron, can be produced with the desired low roughness (R < 3 μm) and are scratch-resistant even under all stresses that can be expected even with improper use. They are also completely corrosion-resistant; since the base material of the sliding surface is also corrosion-resistant, the fact that hard material layers of this thickness still have pores through which the base material could otherwise be attacked is of no importance. Hard material layers are also heat-resistant far beyond the temperatures in question here.
Such processes, as described in their basic principles in US-A-3 625 848, offer a cost-effective way of providing metallic objects of almost any size and shape with a coating that is formed from the reaction of one or more metallic elements generated by the arc discharge.

Als weiterer, mit dem Frfindungsgegenstand erzielter, wennIn a special embodiment of the invention, the coating consists of titanium nitride TiN. This coating material has already been used in many different ways to coat (cutting) tools and other objects that are subject to abrasive wear. Ironing textiles, however, does not involve stress of this kind. Another advantage achieved with the invention, if

5Another advantage that is not purely technical is that titanium nitride, due to its color that is almost indistinguishable from gold, also gives the iron a decorative effect.

An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing. It shows an iron which consists of a body 1, a handle 2 and a sliding surface 3. In the interior of the body 1 there are electrical heating elements (not visible here) which can be supplied with electricity via an electrical line h ; this supply can be regulated via an adjusting device 5, e.g. in order to set the temperature suitable for processing textiles of different compositions. The body 1 also contains a water reservoir (also not shown), the contents of which emerge in the form of steam through nozzles 6 which are arranged in the sliding surface. This itself is coated with a layer 7 of titanium nitride up to 5 pm thick, which was deposited using an arc plasma process. When applying such a thin layer, the nozzles 6 cannot become clogged by the applied coating material, as is to be expected when using thicker layers.
