Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for cold forming unalloyed titanium.
- Titanium and titanium alloys have found increasing use in technology in the recent past. The reason for this is the excellent technological properties of the titanium materials, in particular their high corrosion resistance and low specific weight, which results in a weight saving of almost 40% compared to steel with the relatively high strength of the titanium alloys. Titan and its alloys have therefore proven themselves particularly in the aerospace industry, in chemical apparatus engineering, in energy generation, in marine technology and - because of their good physical tolerance - in medical technology.
- unalloyed titanium is a ductile material with high elongation and constriction, its strength increases considerably at the expense of ductility and ductility with increasing content of alloying elements; this applies in particular to the oxygen which brings about solid-solution strengthening, which is why the practice with unalloyed titanium has four qualities with oxygen contents from 0.05 to 0.35% and strengths of 240 to 740 N / mm2. However, the strength is strongly temperature-dependent and is lost to about 50% at a temperature of only 300 ° C without a significant change in ductility.
- titanium has a hexagonal crystal structure with a reduced number of sliding planes compared to the face-centered or body-centered cubic lattice, the deformation resistance is so great that commercially available alpha + beta titanium alloys can hardly be cold worked.
- Unalloyed titanium is more or less cold-formable depending on the oxygen content. With increasing oxygen content and degree of deformation, however, there is such a strong strain hardening that intermediate annealing is essential. For example, the tensile strength doubles after 40% cold forming, while the elongation at break drops to a third. The elongation at break is often only 5 to 10%. This is a major disadvantage in that high surface qualities and strengths can only be achieved by cold working, albeit at the expense of ductility.
- the unalloyed titanium with the lowest interstitial impurity content of ,10 0.10% oxygen (material no. 3.7025 according to DIN 17850) is still very cold formable.
- the cold formability is greatly reduced, which is why a stronger forming is only possible with multiple intermediate annealing after a forming cycle.
- the intermediate annealing usually takes place either above the recrystallization temperature (soft annealing at 600 to 800 ° C) in order to restore the cold formability by a new formation of the grain or by stress relieving in the temperature range from 500 to 600 ° C, whereby an at least partial recrystallization is not excluded .
- the temperature at which the recrystallization begins during intermediate annealing depends on the composition of the titanium, the degree of cold working and the duration of the annealing. For this purpose it follows from U. Zwicker "Titan and Titanium Alloys", 1974, pages 226 to 232, that the recrystallization takes place with an annealing time of one hour regardless of the degree of deformation in the temperature range from 600 to 700 ° C and begins above 400 ° C.
- the cold forming is followed by a final annealing.
- the type and degree of the previous cold forming play a decisive role. In this respect, it is possible to selectively adjust the grain size in the soft annealing via the degree of deformation, the annealing temperature and time.
- the final or soft annealing usually takes place according to DIN 65 084 - depending on the respective content of interstitially dissolved elements - above the recrystallization temperature in the range of 600 to 800 ° C with a cold duration of 10 to 120 minutes.
- stress relief annealing is alternatively carried out as a final heat treatment in the temperature range 500 to 600 ° C with a cold duration of 30 to 60 minutes in accordance with DIN 65 084.
- Titanium and titanium alloys have already proven themselves in medical technology, for example as a material for endoprostheses, jaw implants, bone plates, bone screws, bone nails, pacemaker housings and surgical instruments.
- the standard alloy Ti A1 6 V is used because of its good strength properties 4 in the foreground.
- vanadium content seems problematic, since elemental vanadium reacts toxicly in the human body.
- Alloys containing nickel should not be used either, as there is a risk of nickel allergy when used in individual cases. The trend is therefore in the direction of vanadium-free titanium alloys, for example the specially developed implant alloy Ti A1 5 Fe 2.5.
- the invention is based on the object of providing a method for cold forming which makes it possible to set a combination of high strength and ductility in the case of unalloyed titanium, in particular titanium grade 4, and in particular to improve the bendability.
- the annealing temperature is preferably below 500 ° C.
- the annealing time is preferably 30 minutes to a few hours and is inversely related to the annealing temperature within this time frame.
- the degree of deformation can be 10 to 90%, preferably 20 to 50%; It also determines the annealing temperature in individual cases, since there is a connection between the degree of deformation and the annealing temperature insofar as low degrees of deformation allow higher annealing temperatures and higher degrees of deformation allow lower annealing temperatures, since the lower the degree of deformation, the higher the recrystallization temperature.
- the intermediate annealing takes place below the recrystallization temperature, preferably below the temperature for stress relieving according to DIN 65 084; however, due to a very uniform reduction in the dislocation density, as could be demonstrated by means of electron microscopic images, it leads to a reduction in voltage.
- the absence of so-called cell structures, which are an indication of a pronounced recovery, is typical of the glow according to the invention.
- the cold forming can be done by drawing, rolling, hammering, forging or rolling, for example with 1 to 20, preferably 3 to 5, stitches.
- the cold deformation or intermediate annealing cycles can be followed by a final annealing, for example a one to three hour tempering below the recrystallization temperature, preferably below 450 ° C., in order to finally adjust the strength and elongation and to improve the susceptibility to cracking.
- unalloyed titanium grade 4 according to material number 3.7065 according to DIN draft 17 850 was also used 0.050% iron, 0.32% oxygen, 0.005% nitrogen, 0.03% carbon, 0.0070% hydrogen, Rest titanium and melting-related Impurities first hot-rolled into a wire with a diameter of 21 mm.
- the starting material was then subjected to a four-time intermediate annealing with a duration of 3 hours 475 ° C to a cross section of 17.5 x 5.2 mm cold worked and then finally annealed at 425 ° C for two hours.
- the diagram shows how the tensile strength is reduced to the lower boundary line and the stretch to the upper boundary line between the two boundary lines for the tensile strength on the one hand and the elongation on the other hand in accordance with the dashed lines during intermediate annealing (vertical partial lines) increases, and during the following deformation step (inclined partial lines) the tensile strength increases again up to the upper limit line and the elongation decreases again to the lower limit line.
- the diagram in FIG. 3 illustrates particularly clearly the advantages which can be achieved with the method according to the invention.
- the first cold forming cycle with a 28% reduction in cross-section until the first intermediate annealing increases the strength by 180 N / mm2.
- the subsequent cold forming with a respective reduction in cross section of about 30% and intermediate annealing leads to a further increase in strength by 150 N / mm2 to 1000 N / mm2, ie approximately 40 N / mm2 per deformation cycle. With higher degrees of deformation or more frequent deformation and annealing cycles, the strength can be increased to values above 1000 N / mm2.
- the elongation is reduced by the first cold deformation cycle from initially 33% to 18% and with further deformations to 12%.
- the intermediate annealing increases the stretch again to 28 to 22%.
- any combination of strength and elongation between the two boundary lines can be controlled during school heating (last vertical sub-line). Higher annealing temperatures and / or longer annealing times further reduce the strength and increase the elongation accordingly.
- Fig. 4 shows the influence of the temperature of the final annealing on the mechanical properties of cold-formed titanium, grade 2. According to the requirements, lower annealing temperatures are also possible in order to achieve the desired relationship between yield strength, strength and elongation.
- the method according to the invention thus leads to a significant improvement in the bendability.
- the cold-rolled unalloyed titanium in the form of plates, sheet metal, tape, wire and profiles is particularly suitable for medical technology, for example for bone splints, bone screws, bone nails, tooth pins and tooth body anchors, dentures, pacemaker housings, heart valves, prostheses and for medical instruments , Hearing aid parts, blood centrifuges and other medical devices.
- the use of the titanium treated by the process according to the invention is also suitable for all other fields of application which require such a favorable combination of properties.
