Definitions
- the present invention relates to an integral casement structure for glazed walls or windows, particularly suitable for civil and industrial use.
- Structures of this kind generally comprise an outer framework, formed by profiled elements made of metallic material, such as aluminum or other light alloys, or made of synthetic material, such as nylon, mounted peripherally to a planar transparent panel, formed by one or more plates of glass or any other technically equivalent material; the framework and the panel are rigidly coupled, generally by glueing.
- Such casements have a partly structural function, since they co-operate with substructures defining, for example, outer walls of buildings, show windows of shopping centers and the like commercial rooms.
- a further function of such casement structures is to ensure an effective protection against atmospheric agents, e.g. infiltrations of wind, water and snow, thermal shocks and prolonged solar irradiation while permitting adequate light transmission.
- said casements also perform an essential aesthetical function, which assumes an increasingly relevant importance in modern architectural structures.
- the peripheral edges of the framework have a transverse cross section with surfaces which are generally perpendicular or parallel to the plane of arrangement of the panel and are adapted to anchor the glazed panel, this latter being simply peripherally smoothed in order to be safely inserted in the frame with minimum play.
- the frame structures obtained by such known method are not free from disadvantages, among which there is, first of all, the limited resistance of silicone adhesives to atmospheric agents, this involving frequent highly expensive repairs or restorations or the sealing beads.
- the main object of the present invention is to eliminate the afore mentioned disadvantages by providing a low cost, highly durable and reliable integral casement structure.
- a particular object of the present invention is to provide an integral casement structure which has a semplified structure, requiring no sealant or adhesive, thus strongly reducing the related repair and maintenance costs.
- a further object of the present invention is to provide an integral casement structure which can be assembled in a workshop with a fully automated cycle and without using highly specialized personnel, so as to reduce the manufacturing costs.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide a highly aesthetic casement structure.
- Not least object of the present invention is to provide an integral casement structure which can be obtained starting from components and materials which are commonly available in the trade.
- the integral casement for windows and glazed walls according to the invention comprises a poligonal framework 2, which is mounted peripherally to a transparent panel 3.
- the peripheral framework may be obtained with conventional manufacturing methods, for example by placing around the periphery of the central panel 3 a plurality of longitudinal elements 4 consisting of predetermined lengths of extruded profile, then connecting their ends by welding or any other equivalent connecting means.
- the material forming the profiled elements 4 may be any customarily used rigid material, such as aluminum alloys, synthetic resins or fibers, composite materials or wood.
- the central panel 3 may consist of one or more mutually facing planar plates, preferably of the glass-box type with an interposed vacuum chamber, made of glass, plexiglass, methacrylate, perspex or other transparent material, optionally provided with filtering, polarizing or partially reflecting layers.
- peripheral framework 2 and the central panel 3 are mutually attached along the coupling edges thereof as will be described in greater detail hereinafter.
- the outer edge of the panel 3 has a transverse cross section with at least one surface inclined with respect to the main plane of the panel, that is the plane of arrangement of the whole casement structure.
- the inner edges of the profiles 4 forming the framework 2 have a complementary shaped cross section, i.e. provided with at least one inclined surface, approximately parallel to the inclined opposite surface of the panel 3. This shape has the advantage of providing, with minimum cost, optimum coupling and mechanical locking of the panel relative to the framework in at least one direction perpendicular to the main plane of the structure.
- the central panel 3a has a peripheral edge with, an inwardly inclined surface 6a, which defines a wedge-like shaped cross section.
- the inner edges of the profiled elements 4a of the frame have complementary shaped surface 7a with the same inclination angle as the opposite surface 6a of the panel and with a small gap with respect thereto.
- the inclination angle ⁇ may advantageously be comprised between 30° and 60° and is preferably approximately 45°.
- a gasket 8 made of an extruded profile of elastomer material is expediently clamped between the facing edges of the framework and of the panel.
- the gasket has a predetermined shape conforming the periphery of the panel, and a cross section adapted to forcingly fill the gap between the surfaces 6a and 7a upon mounting the framework on the panel.
- the gasket 8 has a substantially linear cross section with a mean thickness ranging between 2 and 10 mm according to the dimensions of the finished casement.
- the edge of the gasket directed towards the inner side of the casement slightly overlaps the inner surface of the panel, thus providing optimum mechanical, thermal and acoustic seal, while the opposite edge is flush with the outer surface of the panel.
- the outer edge of the transparent panel 3b has a convex, approximately V-shaped cross section, with two walls 6b inclined in opposite directions, that is one inclined towards the inner side, the other inclined towards the outer side of the casement.
- the inclination angles ⁇ and ⁇ ′ formed respectively by the inner wall and by the outer wall of the panel 3b with the main plane of the panel may have the same value or different values, for instance comprised between 30° and 60°.
- the thicknesses of the panel in correspondence of each inclined surface may furthermore be the same or different, in accordance with specific requirements.
- the cross edge of the V-shaped cross section is obviously smoothed, flattened or rounded.
- the two inclined surfaces 6b form opposite inclination angles of the same value of approximately 45°, so that the apex angle i is approximately 90°.
- the profiled element 4a has, in the region of coupling with the framework, a transverse cross section which is complementarily shaped to the profiled element 4b, with oppositely inclined surfaces 7b, which are substantially parallel to the facing inclined surfaces 6b of the central panel 3b. Further, an elastomeric gasket 8b is fitted between the facing surfaces 6a and 7a and is shaped to seal the gap existing between these surfaces.
- Figure 2c illustrates a third embodiment, which differs from the preceding one essentially in that the edge of the panel 3c has a concave profile, whereas the co-operating edge of the framework has a convex profile.
- Such profiles have a V-shaped cross section similar to that of the preceding embodiment, but directed in an opposite direction.
- Concerning the inclination angles ⁇ and ⁇ ′ similar considerations apply to what set forth above for the second embodiment shown in Figure 2b.
- a peripheral gasket 8c is provided in the interspace between the inclined opposite surfaces 6c and 7c, which gasket being pre-formed to have a V-shaped cross section mating the interstice between such opposite surfaces.
- the edges of the gaskets directed towards the outer side of the casement structure are substantially flush with the outer surface of the panel and of the framework, so that the outer surface of the casement is perfectly planar, thus conferring to the whole structure a notable aesthetic value.
- the above described casement structure may be entirely constructed in a workshop, starting from previously prepared semi-finished elements automatically assembled by robotized assembling centers according to highly accelerated production cycles.
- the so obtained final structures may be mounted directly onto the substructures at the building site, thus eliminating any manual sealing operation.
- the gaskets may be obtained by inject molding or extruding and shaping special elastomers which are resistant to the atmospheric agents and have high durability so as to drastically reduce the need for periodical maintenance.
- the cross sections of the edges of the panels and of the frameworks may have a slightly different shape from those described above in detail, which are not illustrated in the drawings.
- they may have approximately the shape of a W, or a shape including inclined surfaces followed by perpendicular surfaces to the main plane of the panel.
- the profiled elements forming the framework may also have a more complex shape incorporating other accessories or structural elements of the buildings.
- the employed materials and dimensions may be any according to the specific requirements and to the state of the art.
