Definitions

  • This invention relates to doors and particularly provides a security door.
  • FR-A-2 109 017 discloses a security door of the type having a major metal tray defining an opening and a minor metal tray closing the opening.
  • the trays are connected together by location of a resilient member carried on the minor tray under a lip of the major tray.
  • a security door comprising a major sheet metal tray which itself comprises a panel, side and end walls standing from the panel, marginal portions inturned from the walls and overlying the panel and spaced therefrom, and terminal re-entrant portions turned from the marginal portions toward the panel, elongate frame members disposed within the tray alongside the respective walls, the members having slots receiving the respective terminal re-entrant portions, and a minor sheet metal tray which itself comprises a panel and side and end walls standing from the panel, the minor tray being so dimensioned that the panel thereof closes an opening bounded by the terminal re-entrant portions of the major tray; characterised in that the frame members have ribs on one side engaging the walls to provide a recess between the frame members and the walls and bevelled edges permitting the members to be applied laterally into the tray so as to interengage with the walls and terminal re-entrant portions thereof, and the walls of the minor tray are received in the slots of the frame members alongside the terminal re-entrant portions of the major tray;
  • a security door comprising a major sheet metal tray which itself comprises a panel, side and end walls standing from the panel, marginal portions inturned from the walls and overlying the panel and spaced therefrom, and terminal re-entrant portions turned from the marginal portions toward the panel, elongate frame members disposed within the tray alongside the respective walls, the members having slots receiving the respective terminal re-entrant portions, and a minor sheet metal tray which itself comprises a panel and side and end walls standing from the panel, the minor tray being so dimensioned that the panel thereof closes an opening bounded by the terminal re-entrant portions of the major tray; characterised in that the panel of the minor tray lies flush with the marginal portions of the major tray, the frame members have bevelled edges permitting the members to be applied laterally into the tray so as to interengage with the walls and terminal re-entrant portions thereof, and the walls of the minor tray are received in the slots of the frame members alongside the terminal re-entrant portions of the major tray.
  • a security door comprises a rectangular major sheet steel tray 1 which itself comprises a panel 2, side walls 3 and end walls 4 standing from the panel 2 (only one side wall and one end wall being shown).
  • a marginal portion 5 is inturned from each side wall 3 and a marginal portion 6 is inturned from each end wall 4.
  • the marginal portions 5 and 6 overlie the panel 2 and are spaced therefrom.
  • a terminal re-entrant portion 7 is turned from each marginal portion 5 and a terminal re-entrant portion 8 is turned from each marginal portion 6, the portions 7 and 8 being turned towards the panel 2.
  • the portions 5 and 7 are cut back at their ends so as to accommodate the portions 6 and 8 at the corners of the tray 1.
  • Tabs 9 are provided at the ends of the walls 3 and bent over for securement to the ends of the walls 4 by pop-rivets (not shown).
  • the door also comprises four elongate hollow frame members extruded from aluminium.
  • the frame member at the hinged side and at each end has profile as shown at 10 in Fig. 1 whereas the frame member at the fly side has a wider profile as shown at 11, in order to accommodate a lock and latch mechanism (not shown).
  • the profile is generally rectangular with two elongate parallel ribs 12 on one side and bevels 13 and 14 outboard of the respective ribs.
  • An elongate slot 15 is provided alongside one bevel 13 and in one adjacent side of the profile. On the side of the slot 15 remote from the bevel 13 there is a ledge 16 from which the said one adjacent side of the profile is relieved until a further elongate rib 17 is provided.
  • the bevels 13 and 14 enable the frame members 10 and 11 to be inserted into the tray 1 laterally.
  • the nose between the bevel 13 and the slot 15 can be introduced under the portion 7 in Fig. 2, whereupon the profile can then be disposed in its illustrated position with the ribs 12 engaging the wall 3 and the portion 7 received in the slot 15.
  • the members 10 and 11 By suitably dimensioning the lengths of the members 10 and 11 the members, when assembled in the tray 1, have limited space for lengthwise movement.
  • a rectangular minor sheet steel tray 18 comprises a panel 19 and side and end walls 20 standing from the panel 19.
  • the tray 18 is so dimensioned that the panel 19 closes the opening bounded by the portions 7 and 8 of the tray 1 and the walls 20 of the tray 18 are received in the slots 15 alongside the portions 7.
  • a seal 21 is provided between the panel 19 and the ledges 16 to prevent the egress of a high pressure foam 22 injected into the space between the panels 2 and 19 and bounded by the members 10 and 11. Once the foam has set the members 10 and 11 are positively in engagement with the walls 3 and 4 of the tray 1.
  • the rib 17 also locks into the set foam. In most cases this provides the door with sufficient rigidity.
  • the ends of the members 10 and 11 may be secured to each other prior to the fitting of the tray 18 with or without the later injection of a settable foam.
  • spacer blocks may be applied to the corners of the tray 1 prior to the application of the members 10 and 11.
  • the ribs 12 are provided on the members 10 and 11 in order to provide recesses into which the sheet steel of the wall 3 can be distended when screwing a lock faceplate to the member 1.
  • the recess is also used to receive one leg of each hinge, one rib 12 being cut away as required and the leg of the hinge being inserted through a slot cut in the steel and between the member 10 and the wall 3 of the tray 1.
  • hollow members 10 and 11 may each be replaced by a length of timber of rectangular cross-section of suitable dimensions.
  • the cross-section is provided at two adjacent corners with bevels equivalent to the bevels 13 and 14 and for the same purpose and a slot is routed-in equivalent to the slot 15.
  • the strength of the door is derived mainly from the "wrap-around" feature of the side walls 3 and end walls 4, the marginal portions 5 and 6, and the terminal re-entrant portions 7 and 8 of tray 1 with respect to the frame members.
