- the cross-section is provided at two adjacent corners with bevels equivalent to the bevels 13 and 14 and for the same purpose and a slot is routed-in equivalent to the slot 15.

Abstract
Description
- This invention relates to security doors. According to the invention there is provided a security door comprising a major sheet metal tray which itself comprises a panel, side and end walls standing from the panel, marginal portions inturned from the walls and overlying the panel and spaced therefrom, and terminal reentrant portions turned from the marginal portions toward the panel, elongate frame members disposed within the tray and alongside the respective walls, the members having slots receiving the respective terminal re-entrant portions and bevelled edges permitting the members to be applied laterally into the tray so as to interengage with the walls and terminal re-entrant portions thereof, and a minor sheet metal tray which itself comprises a panel and side and end walls standing from the panel, the minor tray being so dimensioned that the panel thereof closes an opening bounded by the terminal re-entrant portions of the major tray and the walls of the minor tray are received in the slots of the frame members alongside the terminal re-entrant portions of the major tray.
- An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:-
- Fig. 1 is an exploded isometric view of a corner of a door; and
- Fig. 2 is a cross-section through one edge of the door in Fig. 1.
- In the drawing, a security door comprises a rectangular major sheet steel tray 1 which itself comprises a
panel 2,side walls 3 andend walls 4 standing from the panel 2 (only one side wall and one end wall being shown). A marginal portion 5 is inturned from eachside wall 3 and amarginal portion 6 is inturned from eachend wall 4. Themarginal portions 5 and 6 overlie thepanel 2 and are spaced therefrom. A terminal re-entrant portion 7 is turned from each marginal portion 5 and a terminal re-entrant portion 8 is turned from eachmarginal portion 6, the portions 7 and 8 being turned towards thepanel 2. The portions 5 and 7 are cut back at their ends so as to accommodate theportions 6 and 8 at the corners of the tray 1. Tabs 9 are provided at the ends of thewalls 3 and bent over for securement to the ends of thewalls 4 by pop-rivets (not shown). - The door also comprises four elongate hollow frame members extruded from aluminium. In the door shown, which is hinged, the frame member at the hinged side and at each end has profile as shown at 10 in Fig. 1 whereas the frame member at the fly side has a wider profile as shown at 11, in order to accommodate a lock and latch mechanism (not shown). The Profile is generally rectangular with two elongate
parallel ribs 12 on one side andbevels elongate slot 15 is provided alongside onebevel 13 and in one adjacent side of the profile. On the side of theslot 15 remote from thebevel 13 there is aledge 16 from which the said one adjacent side of the profile is relieved until a furtherelongate rib 17 is provided. - The
bevels frame members 10 and 11 to be inserted into the tray 1 laterally. Thus, by sliding the profile by itsbevel 14 on thepanel 2 the nose between thebevel 13 and theslot 15 can be introduced under the portion 7 in Fig. 2, whereupon the profile can then be disposed in its illustrated position with theribs 12 engaging thewall 3 and the portion 7 received in theslot 15. By suitably dimensioning the lengths of themembers 10 and 11 the members, when assembled in the tray 1, have limited space for lengthwise movement. - A rectangular minor
sheet steel tray 18 comprises apanel 19 and side andend walls 20 standing from thepanel 19. Thetray 18 is so dimensioned that thepanel 19 closes the opening bounded by the portions 7 and 8 of the tray 1 and thewalls 20 of thetray 18 are received in theslots 15 alongside the portions 7. A seal 21 is provided between thepanel 19 and theledges 16 to prevent the egress of ahigh pressure foam 22 injected into the space between thepanels members 10 and 11. Once the foam has set themembers 10 and 11 are positively in engagement with thewalls rib 17 also locks into the set foam. In most cases this provides the door with sufficient rigidity. However, the ends of themembers 10 and 11 may be secured to each other prior to the fitting of thetray 18 with or without the later injection of a settable foam. In an improvement, spacer blocks may be applied to the corners of the tray 1 prior to the application of themembers 10 and 11. - The
ribs 12 are provided on themembers 10 and 11 in order to provide recesses into which the sheet steel of thewall 3 can be distended when screwing a lock faceplate to the member 1. The recess is also used to receive one leg of each hinge, onerib 12 being cut away as required and the leg of the hinge being inserted through a slot cut in the steel and between themember 10 and thewall 3 of the tray 1. - In a modification the
hollow members 10 and 11 may each be replaced by a length of timber of rectangular cross-section of suitable dimensions. The cross-section is provided at two adjacent corners with bevels equivalent to thebevels slot 15. - The strength of the door is derived mainly from the "wrap-around" feature of the
side walls 3 andend walls 4, themarginal portions 5 and 6, and the terminal re-entrant portions 7 and 8 of tray 1 with respect to the frame members.
