Description

The present invention relates to a watch case comprising a middle part and a plurality of components together defining a housing intended to receive a watch movement and display means, in which the components comprise a crystal and a back and in which the middle part has a recess opening towards the inside of the box, a first bearing surface cooperating with the glass and a second bearing surface cooperating with the bottom, the first and second surfaces being cylindrical and defining openings in which the glass and the bottom are respectively engaged.

Document CH-A-66541 already describes a hollowed-out caseband enclosing a watch movement. This middle part also has a first bearing surface cooperating with a crystal and a second bearing surface cooperating with a bottom. These first and second bearing surfaces are however not cylindrical but conical since the crystal and the bottom are adjusted to the notch on the middle. Furthermore, the movement is held in place in the middle without the help of studs which would take place in the recess of the middle as will appear in the present invention. The construction proposed in the cited document is reserved above all for a pocket watch in which no particular provision is made to reduce the thickness of the watch or to minimize the weight of material constituting the middle part, as is the case in the invention which will be described, where the middle part can be made of precious metal while reducing as much as possible the weight of this metal.

The middle part of the watch case described in document CH-A-664251 also has a recess opening towards the inside of the case. In addition, this middle part is provided with first and second bearing surfaces which are cylindrical and define openings in which the glass and the bottom are respectively engaged. However, there are also not in this construction studs arranged in the recess, which leads to difficulties, in particular with regard to the axial and radial attachments of the movement.

Thus the watch case according to the invention, in addition to having the characteristics given above in the first paragraph, is characterized by the fact that at least three studs integral with the middle part are arranged in the space defined by said recess and are shaped to position axially at least one of said components.

The invention will now be described in the description which follows, given by way of nonlimiting example, with the aid of the drawing showing an embodiment and in which:
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the box according to the invention where only the middle part has been shown with a characteristic pad,
  • FIG. 2 is an enlargement of zone II visible in FIG. 1,
  • Figures 3, 4 and 5 are sections along lines III-III, IV-IV and VV visible respectively in Figure 1 where we assume the watch case fully assembled.

Reference will first be made to FIGS. 1 and 5. In these figures, the watch case comprises a middle part 1 and a plurality of components comprising a crystal 2 and a base 3. This box is intended to receive a watch movement 17 and means for displaying the time of which only the dial 14 appears here. As can be seen in FIG. 1, the middle part 1 has a recess 4 opening towards the inside of the case, a first bearing surface 5 which cooperates with the glass 2 and a second bearing surface 6 which cooperates with the bottom 3. In particular, and according to a first characteristic of the invention, the first and second bearing surface 5 and 6 are cylindrical in this sense that they are directed in the direction of the axis of the box. These bearing surfaces thus define openings in which the glass and the bottom are respectively engaged. According to a second important characteristic of the invention at least three studs 7 are integral with the middle part 1 and are arranged in the space defined by the recess 4. Only one of these studs is visible in FIG. 1, located approximately at 11 o'clock of the timepiece. As will be explained in detail below, each of these studs 7 is shaped to position axially at least one of the components comprising the glass and the bottom.

It recognizes in particular a portion of the middle part 1 and one of the three studs 7 confined inside the recess 4. The stud 7, either can be reported in the recess 4, or can be made in one piece with the middle part 1. In the first case, the stud can be welded into the bottom of the recess, any other means, such as bonding, which can however be envisaged . In the second case, we will start from a full middle without recess and, by means of a cutter having a profile similar to that of the recess, we will machine the middle by moving the cutter away from the three places where the studs must be present.

The watch case presented as an example in FIG. 1 has a round middle and the recess 4 is in the shape of a vault 10 as is clearly seen in FIGS. 2 to 5. This way of doing things is particularly well suited to boxes whose middle is in gold, because it contributes to very significantly decrease the weight of gold and consequently decrease the cost of the watch. The invention could, however, be applied to a form watch with the same advantages indicated above. It will also be noted that the arch-shaped recess contributes to stiffening the middle, more than if it was made without recess.

As can be seen in Figures 3, 4 and 5, the box is sealed by fittings. To this end, there is a first lining 8 between the glass 2 and the first bearing surface 5 and a second lining 9 between the bottom 3 and the second bearing surface 6.

It has already been said that the studs 7 were shaped to position axially at least one of the components comprising the glass and the bottom.

For this purpose, and if one refers to Figures 2, 4 and 5 the stud 7 carries a projection 11 beyond the recess 4 and extending in the direction of movement 17. The axial positioning of the glass 2 is achieved by to an upper batt 12 presented by the projection 11. On this upper batt 12 rests a flange 15 against which the glass 2 rests, the flange serving to ensure a well-defined distance between the dial 14 and the underside of the glass 2 and thus leaving a free space for needles (not shown). To mount the glass, the middle part 1 is provided with its pads 7, which pads are preferably arranged at 11 o'clock, at 3 o'clock and at 7 o'clock. The flange 15 is introduced from the top which will come to rest on the upper flaps 12 of the projections 11 of the studs. The annular lining 8 is then introduced and the ice 2 is expelled inside the lining until said ice press the flange, the latter in turn pressing the projection 11. At the end of this operation, the edge of the ice compresses the gasket 8 against the bearing surface 5 to ensure the watertightness of the watch.

Although this can be done in another way, we will use the same projection 11 to axially position the bottom 3. As can be seen particularly well in FIGS. 2 and 5 the projection 11 of the stud 7 carries a lower battue 13 on which rests a casing circle 16 against which the bottom 3 rests. The casing circle is shaped to hold in place the movement 17, this movement resting in known manner in a housing formed in the casing circle. Also in known manner, the movement is fixed to the casing circle by flanges, just as the dial 14 is fixed to the movement by feet of the dial. Thus to mount the movement in the case, the movement 17 is introduced with its adjoining circle 16 from the underside of the middle part 1, until the circle 16 comes to rest on the bottom battue 13 of the projection 11. Then we introduce the annular lining 9 and the bottom 3 is chased inside the lining until said bottom 3 comes to bear on the casing ring 16, the latter in turn pressing on the projection 11. At the end of this operation the bottom edge compresses the lining 9 against the bearing surface 6 to seal the box.

The embodiment shown shows a bottom 3 which is an assembly formed by a ring 20 and a closure plate 21. Ring and plate can be made in one piece or even be attached one on the other by means of glue for example. If the middle part is gold, the plate will also be gold. However, as shown in FIGS. 3 to 5, in order to reduce the weight of gold as much as possible, the plate can be a second lens attached to the ring. The result is a cheap gold box whose precious metal weight can be less than four grams. In this case the goldsmith's punch will be affixed to the middle.

As shown in Figures 1 and 3, the middle 1 carries attachment means 22 of a bracelet held in place by means of pins passing through holes 23. These horns can be made in one piece with the middle or attached afterwards by welding for example.

As also shown in Figure 4, the box provides an opening 18 continued by a bore 19 passing through both the stud 7 and the casing ring 16, which allows the establishment of a setting rod hour, rod which is very conventionally placed in its housing by means of a tube and a seal.

The studs 7 are at least three in number to ensure a suitable seat for the components to be assembled. We will preferably choose an opening 10 ° for the stud coinciding with the entry of the rod and 5 ° for the other two.

It has been shown that the proposed construction makes it possible to reduce the weight of gold to be used as much as possible while ensuring solid mechanical construction as well as very easy assembly of the box.
