Abstract

In this socket contact for electrical plugs, two cooperating contact elements (2, 3; 4, 5) are arranged one behind the other in the insertion direction of an electrical plug on the box-like sheet metal frame (1), so that there are two different, spaced contact levels for the plug, which result in a particularly secure contact.

Description

The invention relates to a socket contact for electrical connectors, with a box-like sheet metal frame on which four contact elements are formed.

Such box-shaped socket contacts, which are bent together from a correspondingly punched-out piece of sheet metal, are commercially available with two opposing contact elements, usually in the form of a relatively rigid contact tongue and a resilient contact arm. However, it is also known from EP-A1-0123383 such a socket contact which has four contact elements. In this known socket contact, the four contact elements lie in a single contact plane. Compared to socket contacts with two contact elements, this only leads to an unsatisfactory increase in contact reliability. For reasons of contact security, it is hardly possible to move the existing contact level particularly close to the front end of the socket contact, so that contacting extremely short connector pins remains problematic. From contacting the inserting plug through the four contact elements until the end position is reached, there is also a considerable pressure or tensile force for the actuation.

The present invention has for its object to provide a socket contact of the generic type, which is characterized by particularly high contact reliability in connection with a relatively smooth operation.

The solution according to the invention essentially consists in that two interacting contact elements are arranged one behind the other in the insertion direction of the plug. Two contact planes lying one behind the other at a predetermined distance are now formed. This leads to a special contact security and to a good hold of the plug in the socket contact, in particular also taking into account vibratory loads on the plug connection. Furthermore, in this embodiment, it is possible, according to a preferred embodiment, to arrange the pair of front contact elements at a relatively short distance from the socket contact front edge. You can therefore put this socket contact on plugs with extremely short pins, which are then still contacted by two contact elements.

Also to be emphasized in this context is the relatively low pressure or tensile force required for actuation, seen over the entire insertion length of the plug. Because of the offset of the two contact levels, this only increases gradually. In this respect, the force exerted by all four contact elements can only be overcome for the relatively short push-in distance between the rear contact plane and the end of the insertion path. This advantage is all the more significant since there are up to 50 socket contacts and more in multiple connectors, which are contacted simultaneously with a single plug.

According to a further preferred embodiment, the rear contact element pair is arranged with its contact surfaces offset by 90 ° to the contact surfaces of the front contact element pair in this socket contact. This again contributes to increasing contact security. Since impairments of the contact area, for example due to a special inclined insertion on the plug, or vibratory loads, occur only in one direction or their opposite direction, in such a case at least one pair of contact elements remains completely unaffected or unaffected. In addition, this offset by 90 ° enables a structurally simplified configuration of the sheet metal blank and thus its simplified production in view of the fact that a total of four contact elements are now to be formed on the uniform sheet metal blank.

Weitere bevorzugte Ausgestaltungen sind in weiteren Unteransprüchen gekennzeichnet.Further preferred configurations are characterized in further subclaims.

An embodiment of a socket contact according to the invention is described below with reference to the drawing.
Show it
  • FIG. 1 shows a first perspective illustration of a socket contact according to the invention, partially broken for illustration,
  • Figure 2 shows another perspective view of the socket contact of Figure 1, seen from another side.

The socket contact has a box-shaped sheet metal frame 1, the various functional elements to be described below being formed on the corresponding sheet metal blank by punching out. Thus, on this socket contact, seen in the direction of insertion of an electrical plug, a front contact plane is formed by two contact elements lying opposite one another, in the exemplary embodiment shown by a relatively rigid, small, basic contact tongue 2, which is pressed outward from the corresponding side wall of the box-shaped socket contact, and further with a resilient contact arm 3, which extends from a rear region of an opposite side wall of the box-shaped socket contact into the front region.

On the socket contact there is also a second contact plane, which is located behind the first contact plane in the plugging direction of the electrical connector, in the exemplary embodiment shown again formed by a relatively rigid contact tongue 4 and, opposite it, a resilient contact arm 5, which in this case differs from one front area of the corresponding side wall of the socket contact extends to the rear.

In this embodiment, the contact elements 2 and 3 as well as 4 and 5 are each formed from all four side walls of the socket contact in such a way that the rear pair of contact elements with its contact surfaces formed by the contact tongue 4 and the contact arm 5 are offset by 90 ° to the contact surfaces, which form the front contact tongue 2 and the front contact arm 3. This makes it possible to keep the stamping blank relatively simple and, in particular, leads to an arrangement which is nested with respect to the contact elements and is therefore also protected the way, for example, the rear contact plane with the contact tongue 4 and the resilient contact arm 5 is protected between a side wall of the socket contact and the rear region of the resilient contact arm 3 projecting forward of the front contact zone. In the front contact plane, flaps 6 can be provided on corresponding side walls of the socket contact, under which the front effective area of the resilient contact arm 3 is protected.

On the box-like sheet metal frame of the socket contact, a locking tab 7 for locking the socket contact in a housing and a stop wall 8 are also formed in the usual manner, the latter preventing the plug from being inserted too far.

In an expedient embodiment, the contact plane of the front contact elements 2, 3 lies only at a relatively short distance from the socket contact front edge, specifically measured from the front edge of the insulation region (not shown). In this way, extremely short pins can still be contacted with two contact elements. Pin lengths of approximately 2.5 mm and less can occur, with conventional pin lengths of approximately 5.8 mm. Based on this numerical example, the front contact level, for example, can lie 1.7 mm measured from the front edge of the insulation, while the second contact level is then approximately 3.8 mm behind the first contact level.

In its rear area, the socket contact according to the invention, integrally formed from the box-shaped sheet metal frame, has one of the commercially available connections, for example a crimp connection or a cutting connection, for example with two mutually spaced insulation displacement areas, in order to connect an electrical conductor here using one of the common connection techniques can. Deviating from the exemplary embodiment described above, it is also possible to design the four pairs of contact elements such that the two pairs of contact elements are each formed only by resilient contact arms. In a further embodiment, it is also possible to equip only the front or only the rear contact level with two resilient contact arms. Any desired combination of resilient contact arms and relatively rigid contact tongues can be used within the scope of the invention. In one or the other embodiment, the requirement may arise to replace the latching tab 7 described above for latching the socket contact in a housing by another, conventional latch. In connection with other structural configurations, it is also possible to provide a contact tongue which is more resilient in contrast to one or the other relatively rigid contact tongue. If the pair of front contact elements is formed by two resilient contact arms, these expediently start from the rear region of two mutually opposite side walls of the box-like frame, namely overlapping the rear contact plane.
