Description

The invention relates to a device according to the preamble of claim 1. Such a device is known from DE-A-31 25 503. Such devices are used in installations for cleaning bundles of tubes such as those equipping the condensers of large steam turbines, the heat exchangers of nuclear reactors, installations implementing forced circulation in these tubes of balls of elastic material whose diameter is slightly greater than the diameter of the tubes, said circulation being imposed by the liquid brought to circulate in through said tubes, liquid for example constituted by water drawn from a river.

It relates more particularly, among said installations, those which comprise, between the outlet and the inlet of the bundle of tubes, a circuit for recycling balls, essentially comprising a grid extending across the outlet pipe of said bundle so as to recover the balls leaving this bundle, and a recycling tubing suitable for receiving a stream of the above liquid charged with the balls thus recovered and for reinjecting this stream into the inlet pipe of the bundle of tubes, tubing successively passing through a drive pump and a ball collector, said collector being in particular constituted by an isolable and openable receptacle.

In order to evacuate used balls, that is to say the diameter of which has become insufficient to ensure effective cleaning of the tubes, out of such installations, it has been proposed to make these installations understand a separation or sorting chamber delimited by a screen, placed inside the ball collector and connected to a point on the recycling tube, located downstream of this collector, the pipe which connects said chamber to said point passing through a basket of collection and disposal of used balls collected in the room.

Le tamis était alors une tôle perforée par des ouvertures circulaires ayant un diamètre sensiblement égal à celui des boules usées à éliminer et donc inférieur à celui des boules saines (voir FR-A-2 468 868 et DE-A-31 25 503).The sieve was then a sheet perforated by circular openings having a diameter substantially equal to that of the used balls to be eliminated and therefore less than that of healthy balls (see FR-A-2 468 868 and DE-A-31 25 503).

Given the elastic nature of the material of the balls, those having a diameter slightly greater than that of the worn balls to be eliminated tended to penetrate partly into the openings of the sieve and to get caught in these openings, at the risk of rapidly clogging the sieve and thus rendering it inoperative.

We have tried to remedy this serious drawback by creating turbulence in the liquid carrying the balls just upstream of the sieve. In practice, however, the reported drawback has not been fully overcome.

L'invention a pour but, surtout, de remédier à cet inconvénient. The object of the invention is, above all, to remedy this drawback.

To this end, the devices for eliminating used balls according to the invention also comprise a static separator member for used balls mounted on the recycling pipe, a bypass pipe connected to this separator member so as to collect the separated used balls and a basket for collecting these balls connected to the bypass line, and they are essentially characterized in that the separating member forms a section of the recycling pipe, in that the openings for separating the worn balls included in this separating member are delimited by the ridges of parallel rails extending parallel to the flow of liquid in said tube and together forming the bars of a sort of grid, the difference between these ridges being slightly less than the diameter of the worn balls to be eliminated, the ends downstream of said rails being terminated by recesses suitable for automatically detaching from the rails the balls introduced partially between these rails without being able to pass between them and driven by sliding along said rails, and an annular chamber connected to the bypass pipe being provided around the downstream ends of said rails rails.

In preferred embodiments, use is also made of one and / or the other of the following arrangements:
  • the constituent rails of the separating member are rectilinear,
  • the crests of the rails according to the preceding paragraph form the longitudinal bars of a cylindrical box of revolution coaxial with the sections, of the recycling pipe, between which said separating member is connected,
  • the inside diameter of the cage according to the preceding paragraph is slightly less than that of the sections of tubing between which the separating member is connected,
  • the inside diameter of the above cage is equal to that of the sections of tubing between which the separating member is connected,
  • the parallel rails consist of plates of constant thickness extending radially in a ring from a cylindrical housing of revolution, towards the axis of this housing,
  • the connection of the separating member to the recycling tubing is carried out upstream of the ball collector and the basket for collecting used balls is connected to the downstream end of the bypass line and placed inside the ball collector ,
  • a removable diaphragm is mounted on the bypass pipe, in particular at its downstream end.

In what follows, a preferred embodiment of the invention will be described with reference to the attached drawing, of course in a non-limiting manner.

La figure 1, de ce dessin, montre schématiquement un faisceau de tubes et une installation destinée à nettoyer ce faisceau à l'aide de boules en matériau élastique, installation équipée d'un dispositif conforme à l'invention pour l'élimination des boules usées.FIG. 1, of this drawing, schematically shows a bundle of tubes and an installation intended to clean this bundle using balls of elastic material, installation equipped with a device according to the invention for the elimination of used balls .

Figures 2 and 3 show respectively in axial section and in partial cross section along III-III, Figure 2, the separating member included by this elimination device.

In a manner known in itself, the bundle of tubes 1 to be cleaned is intended to be traversed by a liquid such as water from a river and this liquid is brought to said bundle by an intake pipe 2 and discharged out of the beam by an exhaust pipe 3.

The tubes are cleaned using balls 4 of elastic material which are entrained by the liquid and which originally have a diameter slightly greater than the inside diameter of the tubes 1.

The discharge pipe 3 is equipped with a grid 5 intended to collect the balls 4 leaving the tubes 1 and to recycle these balls by reinjecting them into the intake pipe 2 via a recycling pipe 6.

This collector 8 contains a basket 9 permeable to liquid but capable of retaining the balls.

Two respectively upstream 10 and downstream 11 valves mounted on the pipe 6 make it possible to isolate the manifold 8 from the rest of this pipe.

The collector can then be opened by a cover 12 so as to allow the removal of the balls collected in the basket 9.

At the base of this basket 9 is a valve 13 allowing either to retain therein all of the balls which reach the collector 8, or to leave escape these balls towards the downstream end 14 of the tubing 6 so as to reinject them into the intake pipe 2.

As explained above, the invention proposes to automatically separate and evacuate from the installation the balls which have become ineffective due to their wear, resulting in a reduction in diameter.

Indeed, this diameter must remain slightly greater than the inside diameter of the tubes 1 to be cleaned, otherwise the balls pass through these tubes without scraping their internal surfaces.

To this end, there is mounted on the recycling tubing 6, between the upstream valve 10 and the ball collector 8, a member 15 for separating used balls, which member is itself connected by a line 16 to a collection basket and elimination 17 permeable to liquid, but not passable by the balls, and disposed inside the collector 8.

The separator 15 is itself formed of static components which cannot be blocked by the balls, namely by rails 18 parallel to each other and parallel to the current of the liquid circulating in the tube 6.

The separation meshes are delimited by the ridges 19 of these parallel rails 18, ridges which are spaced apart from each other by a distance d (FIG. 3) slightly less than the diameter of the worn balls to be eliminated: this distance d is for example equal to 18 mm if the diameter of the worn balls to be removed is between 22 and 24 mm.

To prevent any clogging of said meshes by the slightly too large balls which partially penetrate between the rails without being able to pass between them, and which then slide along the ridges 19 of these rails under the impulse of the liquid, provision is made at the end downstream of each rail 18, a radial offset visible at 20 in FIG. 2.

The balls partially introduced between the rails, but too large to pass between them, slide along these rails and are automatically detached from the rails arriving at the recesses 20, which are preferably connected to the ridges 19 of the corresponding rails by a sharp angle, preferably straight.

The rails 18 are advantageously constituted by flat fins extending radially in a crown, from a cylindrical housing of revolution 21, towards the axis of this housing.

The crests 19 of these rails then extend along the longitudinal bars of a sort of cylindrical cage coaxial with the section of tubing 6 to which it is connected.

As can be seen in FIG. 2, the internal diameter of this cage can be smaller than that of the two sections of tubing 6 which extend it, said cage then being connected to the upstream section by a frustoconical surface 22 and to the downstream section by the recesses 20 described above.

According to an equally advantageous variant, said inside diameter of the cage is equal to that of the sections of tubing 6 which extend this cage, the frustoconical inlet area 22 then being removed and carried over to the outlet of the separator, so as to guide towards the downstream section of tubing 6 the contents of the ring, of enlarged diameter, which is axially contiguous to the terminal sections downstream of the rails 18.

The construction proposed above for the rails 18 has the advantage of offering an enlarged space 23 (FIG. 3) for each worn ball as soon as it has crossed the mesh delimited by two contiguous ridges 19: in this way, these balls are immediately evacuated to line 16 as soon as they have crossed the mesh in question.

The connection between the meshes and the pipe 16 is made successively through:
  • an annular opening 24 provided at the downstream axial end of the housing 21, around the downstream ends of the rails 18, the "downstream" direction being defined relative to the direction of circulation of the liquid designated by the arrow F,
  • and an annular chamber 25 surrounding the housing 21 and the opening 24.

To improve the circumferential circulation of the balls in the spaces 24 and 25, the first is enlarged by cutting at a bevel at 26 the external downstream ends of the fins constituting the rails 18.

The basket 17 is equipped with a cover 27 itself removably mounted on the cover 12 of the collector 8, which makes it possible to replace said basket 17 and to evacuate its contents without it being necessary to open the cover 12, but of course after closing the two valves 10 and 11.

Sur l'extrémité aval de la conduite 16, extrémité qui est raccordée au panier 17, on monte avantageusement un diaphragme amovible 28.A removable diaphragm 28 is advantageously mounted on the downstream end of the pipe 16, the end which is connected to the basket 17.

The choice of this diaphragm makes it possible to adjust at will the relative depression which prevails in the pipe 16 and therefore the hydraulic suction force exerted from this pipe 16 on the liquid and the balls passing through the separator 15.

This setting makes it very easy to modify the maximum value of the diameter of the worn elastic balls which are sorted by the separator 15.

Thus, by simply changing the diaphragm 28, this maximum value can be adjusted between 22 and 24 mm for a given elasticity of the balls, if the opening d of the separation meshes has the value of 18 mm indicated above. .

Bien entendu, toutes choses égales par ailleurs, ladite valeur maximum serait inférieure à celles de l'exemple numérique ci-dessus si l'élasticité des boules était inférieure à celle retenue pour cet exemple et vice-versa.Of course, all other things being equal, said maximum value would be lower than those of the numerical example above if the elasticity of the balls was lower than that retained for this example and vice versa.

We also see in Figure 1:
  • a ball counter device 29 mounted on the pipe 6, between the separator 15 and the collector 8,
  • and a plug 30 removably sealing a tubular end piece 31 provided on the cover 12 and making it possible to reload the installation with fresh balls.

The operation of the used ball separation device described above is as follows.

When the tube cleaning installation 1 is in normal service, with recycling of the balls 4, all these balls are admitted into the separator 15 during each cycle.

All of these balls, which are still effective for cleaning, that is to say which have a diameter significantly greater than the length d , pass axially through the separator 15 right through.

Some of those, said balls, whose diameter is reduced, but which can still be used for cleaning, can partially penetrate between two contiguous rails, but they then slide along these rails due to the entrainment of the liquid and they are released in the recycling circuit arriving at the downstream ends of these rails, thanks to the recesses 20.

Some of the balls considered to be worn, that is to say whose diameter is less than or equal to the length d or only slightly greater than this length d , pass through the meshes defined by the crests 19 of the rails 18, at the price possibly d 'a slight elastic compression, and are immediately routed through the pipe 16 to the basket 17.

This is not the case for all used balls as soon as they pass the separator for the first time, because a certain number of these may then be spaced from the ridges 19, or even at the center of the liquid current in circulation.

But it should be observed that, during the life of each ball, the number of its passages in the separator is very high.

This is how, in general, these passages are renewed twice a minute while the normal duration of effectiveness of a ball generally exceeds one week.

If therefore a worn ball is not eliminated from its first consecutive pass at the moment when its wear has become sufficient to justify elimination, the probability that it will be eliminated soon after, that is to say during the next few passages, is very large and, as the device operates continuously, the efficiency of the automatic separation which it provides is excellent.

When the basket 17 is sufficiently filled with worn balls, which can be determined automatically, in particular by counting the balls remaining in the installation using the member 29, this basket can be released through the cover 27 after closing provisional of the two valves 10 and 11.

A new load of fresh balls is then introduced through the nozzle 31, after release of the plug 30, in order to compensate for the balls eliminated.

To automatically determine the degree of filling of the basket 17 with used balls, a ball counter could be mounted directly on the pipe 16.

Following this, and whatever the embodiment adopted, there is finally obtained a device for eliminating worn balls for a tube bundle cleaning installation, the constitution of which and operation result sufficiently from the above.

This device has many advantages over those previously known and in particular the following:
  • it eliminates only used balls from the installation,
  • its operation is extremely simple since the separation of the used balls is automatic and it suffices to chronically empty the basket 17 when it is filled with used balls and to reintroduce into the collector 8 an identical number of fresh balls,
  • the separator included by this device is extremely robust since it does not include any moving parts and it is very effective since it cannot be clogged by balls whose diameter is slightly greater than the worn ones which it is desired to eliminate.
