Definitions
- a scroll saw consists of a blade stretched between the two branches of a "U" frame - in stationary machines, the lower arm is embedded in the work table - and, for hand tools, a handle which is used to hold, operate and direct this saw.
- the blade is fixed on the frame, which limits the possibilities of cutting the tool. Indeed, to saw along a curve, one can either orient the saw, or gradually turn the piece to be cut. If it is large, it is quickly stopped in both cases by the collision of the saw frame against the edge of this part, especially if the saw cut moves away from its edges. Under these conditions, cutting along a closed curve is practically impossible.
- German patent 26 37 145 in Berne: B 23 D 49/12 which offers a saw whose rear part of the frame is foldable laterally which widens the range of cutting directions, but reduces the possible distance of the saw cut from the edges of the workpiece.
- One of the embodiments of this patent makes it possible to fix the blade so that only its direction of attack has a certain angle with that of the frame, but this angle remains constant during the work of the saw. So the directional advantage you get on one side is as much lost on the opposite side. It is therefore always impossible, with this tool, to cut out a circle or a spiral at the same time. In addition, the saw must be prepared before cutting.
- the present invention provides a scroll saw whose blade can pivot on its longitudinal axis; this blade can therefore be oriented, which is done either by the handle or by means of a wheel, and this during cutting work.
- This property therefore makes it possible to follow any saw cut line independently of the frame orientation, without reducing the maximum possible distance of the cutting line from the edges of the part.
- it is not necessary to rotate the plate that is sawed it is possible to cut circles and spirals, or even letters, from a plate fixed to a work table or which is an integral part of a fixed installation.
- Claim 1 requires the blade of this saw to be able to pivot with its tenons so that it can be oriented.
- the tenons are then provided with rotation shafts which are mounted coaxially with the blade in perforations in the frame which serve as their bearing.
- the rotational movements of the posts must be synchronized; this is why the saw has a synchronization device which, in order not to counteract its movements from top to bottom of the cutting work, has its localized elements - according to claim 2 - along the frame.
- One of these devices consists of three conical gear shafts which connect the toothed wheels fixed coaxially to the blade tenons so that the rotation of one of the tenons causes the opposite tenon to have an identical rotation.
- Another device consists of an endless belt with crossed strands which connects, following on rollers the contours of the frame, the two pulleys fixed in place of the toothed pin wheels of the previous device. Finally, the two studs can be made interdependent and their movements synchronized by a teleflex cable.
- a simple embodiment of this saw consists in fixing the handle to one of the post-holder shafts, therefore coaxially with the blade.
- the frame can rotate freely on this shaft around the common handle-blade axis as it appears in Figure 8.
- the rotation of the handle is then transmitted to the opposite post by the synchronization device.
- the saw will only work properly if there is no play in this synchronization device. This presupposes precise manufacturing, otherwise the blade will twist.
- Claim 6 presents separate blade and frame control devices.
- the shaft attached to the frame which plunges into the handle is attached to it as in any conventional hand framer.
- the handle therefore controls the orientation of the frame.
- the conduct of the blade is then entrusted to a wheel.
- This will advantageously be mounted a little in front of the handle, for example under the blade and coaxially with the latter. It can thus be actuated by the thumb - or thumb and index finger - of the hand which encloses the handle. It can also be mounted on the handle itself, on its front part, its axis being horizontal, which allows it to be actuated by an up and down movement of the operator's thumb.
- a position of the handle set back from the axis of the blade is favorable: it improves the balance of the tool and frees up space for the wheel.
- a scroll saw indeed tires the hand which uses it by the torque generated at the root of the handle by the weight of the frame.
- Another improvement to this drawback consists in providing the saw with a support placed behind the handle. Thus the saw can rest by this support on the operator's hand between the roots of the thumb and forefinger. This is the subject of claim 12.
- the following description refers to the figures and deals with the embodiment with belt synchronization device. This passes around the upper pulley 4 - Figure 1 -, then in the tensor 9.
- the two strands run along the upper arm 10 of the frame pass over two vertical idler pulleys 31 and 32 mounted at the upper corner of the frame, descend along the vertical segment thereof while crossing, then head towards the two other idler pulleys 33 and 34 mounted at the lower angle, continue towards the two rollers 30 for adjusting the spacing of the strands and finally join the pulley 27 of the tenon lower 28 of the blade, which is integral with the handle 22 of the saw.
- a rotation of the handle 22 generates an identical rotation of the upper blade tenon 6 which makes the blade pivot by the same angle.
- the tensor 9 which consists of two rollers 12 and 13 with vertical shafts mounted at a short distance from one of the 'other on a piece sliding along the upper arm 10 of the saw and whose functions are: bring the two strands of belt and tighten it by increasing the path it must travel by its approximation of the pulley.
- the handle has two functions: driving the saw cut and carrying the tool, thus supporting the torque generated at the root of the handle by the weight of the frame. This is the reason for the device in Figure 8.
- the lower arm 20 of the frame the shape of which in section C ⁇ -C ′′′ (not drawn) is similar to CC ′ in FIG. 5 is extended inside the handle 22 by the pipe 21 on which the plain bearings are fixed. 26 and 24.
- the bearing 26 is supported, being able to freely rotate the handle 22.
- the shaft 23 which is integral with the handle 22 on the one hand - here by a screw pitch - and the blade tenon 28 on the other hand.
- This shaft can rotate freely in the bearing 25 integral with the lower saw arm 20. It can be seen that if the handle is held vertically, the frame of the saw cannot tilt, but can rotate freely around the vertical axis of the blade.
- the wheel 27 is driven by the lug 28 which plays the role of key in the opening 31 of FIG. 9.
- the saw exposed here being of a completely conventional general shape, composed of a "U" frame between the ends mites of the branches of which a toothed blade is stretched, the whole being carried by a handle mounted on the frame in the extension of the blade, no overall view was considered necessary.
- Figure 1 shows the upper end of the frame which carries the blade tenon 6 fixed to the shaft 1 which pivots in the bearing 5 driven as it is by the pulley 4, the whole being held in place by the nut 2 .
- Sections A, B, C, D and L are found in Figures 3, 6, 5, 4 and 7 respectively.
- FIG. 1 also shows the sliding belt tensioner 9 with its fixing screw 11.
- Figure 2 gives a side view of this tensor with its two rollers.
- Figures 8 to 11 show, as already studied, the lower end of the saw arm and the swivel handle.
- Figures 12 and 13 show the rear part of the frame respectively in elevation and rear view. We see the idler pulleys 31,32,33,34 as well as the two strands of belt and their crossing.
- Figures 15, 16 and 17 show an embodiment of this saw where the tenon synchronization member is a teleflex cable 36.
- the control member which is a wheel 37; a rotation of the latter is transmitted to the midpoint of the teleflex 35 by means of the teleflex 36 and the gear 38.
- the support 39 is also found set back from the handle.
