  • This invention relates to a tumbler for use in chemical and/or thermal surface treatment of blanks and of a type which comprises a drum rotatable about an axis and having a substantially cylindrical perforated skirt, which is apertured longitudinally to permit of loading and unloading said blanks.
  • the tumblers are usually driven through processing lines which comprise basically a station where the blanks are loaded into the tumblers, a station where the surface treatment is applied by dipping in a fluid -- e.g. by dipping the tumblers into a vat containing a specially provided pickling bath --, and a station where the treated blanks are unloaded.
  • the tumblers are kept rotating about their longitudinal axes to continuously stir the blanks therein.
  • Conventional tumblers usually have the longitudinal apertures in their drums closed by covers in the form of doors hinged to one side thereof and lockable in their closed position by means of bolts or the like.
  • Another prior tumbler design has the cover structurally separated from the drum and affixed thereto by means of lever or bayonet-type fastening arrangements.
  • Such conventional tumblers invariably require manual intervention for both opening and closing the aperture with the cover, which is specially disadvantageous where these operations are to be performed in an aggressive or unhealthy environment for the operator, as is the case with pickling treatments.
  • the problem underlying this invention is to provide a tumbler as indicated, which has such constructional and operational characteristics as to overcome the above-noted drawbacks affecting the prior art.
  • a tumbler of the type specified in the preamble being characterized in that it comprises an arcuate wall having a radius of curvature substantially equal to the skirt radius and being guided for movement in substantial contact with the skirt toward and away from a position where said aperture is closed.

  • the tumbler 1 further comprises a first stop 21 composed of a pair of parallel radial lugs 22, 23 attached to the bottoms 6, 7 in the proximities of the edge 10a of the aperture 10 and being adapted to stop the body 14 at the position where the aperture 10 is closed.
  • a second stop 24 also formed on the drum 5 is a second stop 24, again consisting of a pair of respective radial and parallel lugs 25, 26 attached to the bottoms 6, 7 and arranged in circumferentially spaced-apart relationship with the first stop 21 past the aperture 10 to stop the plate-like body 14 at an open position where the arcuate wall 15 does not interfere with the opening 10.
  • the apparatus 4 comprises a main frame 27 mounted on wheels 28 running along rails 29 which extend all along the vat 3, conventional motor means, not shown, being provided for driving the apparatus 4 along said rails 29.
  • a motor means mounted on the main frame 27 and associated with the body 14 to drive it rotatively about the axis X-X.
  • the motor means 32 comprises an electric servomotor 33 and a drive 34 operative between the electric motor and the bush 20 of the cover 13; in particular, the drive 34 comprises a gear train wherein the last gear is keyed to the bush 20.
  • a brake means 35 adapted to brake the drum rotation about the axis X-X and including (see Figure 2) a friction plate 36 keyed to the end 8A of the shaft 8 and held in pressure contact with a mating portion on the main frame 27.
  • FIG 5 there is shown a variation of the aforesaid brake means 35 according to the invention, consisting of a brake 37 mounted on the main frame 27 and acting on a pulley 38 made rotatively rigid with a second pulley 40 keyed to the shaft 8 at the end 8A by means of a belt 39.
  • Sensor means known per se, such as microcontacts and the like, are provided, moreover, to sense the angular positions of the drum 5 and the cover 13, and to energize or de-energize the motor means 32 accordingly.
  • the tumbler 1 is in a loading position with the aperture 10 facing the hopper 41 and the body 14 positioned to have the arcuate wall 15 to rest against the second stop 24 (see Figure 6).
  • motor means 32 is energized to rotate the cover 13 toward the first stop 21 into the closed position, and the apparatus 4 is driven along the rails 29 to the vat 3 where the tumbler 1 will be dipped into the pickling bath (see Figure 7).
  • the motor means 32 will continue to rotate the cover 13 about the axis X-X even after the closed position is reached; it follows that the cover 13, in pressing against the first stop 21 will entrain the drum 5 rotatively, thus stirring the blanks 2 contained therein.
  • the brake means 25 operative to brake the drum 5 rotation, will cause the cover 13 to be held at all times in pressure contact with the first stop 21 throughout the rotation of the drum with respect to the axis X-X.
  • the apparatus 4 After a predetermined residence time of the tumbler 1 in the vat 3, the apparatus 4 is taken to an unloading station, known per se and not illustrated, which is located downstream from the vat 3. At that station, the motor means 32 is stopped on the drum 5 reaching an unloading position with the aperture 10 down; then the motor means 32 is re-energized to counter-rotate the cover 13 from the closed position to the unloading position, thus freeing the aperture 10 and unloading the blanks 2 from the tumbler 1 (see Figure 8).
  • the tumbler opening and closing operations can be fully automated, and accordingly, carried out in a rapid and safe manner even in the presence of an aggressive environment.
  • the tumbler and the apparatus incorporating it are simple and practical to make, relatively inexpensive, and reliable to operate.
