Definitions
- the subject of the invention is an applicator pad for products to be spread, such as shoe polish, leather care cream, liquid wax, paint, etc.
- Known pads of this kind generally comprise a rigid base, for example of polyethylene comprising a support face on which is fixed a block suitably sized in flexible material such as foam of a plastic material with open cells, for example a polyurethane foam .
- the base is preferably made of polyethylene because this material combines the qualities generally required for: ease of production in large series by injection into a mold at a temperature of about 180 °, rigidity sufficient for use and at the same time flexibility necessary for the use of this base as a stopper for a bottle or a tube with a rigid neck to which the base must adapt, a hydrophobic character which makes it non-wettable by the product to be spread and which facilitates the flow of this product .
- the main object of the invention is to remedy this situation by carrying out the correct assembly of a block of plastic foam with a base whatever the nature of the chemical agents used in the composition of the product to be spread.
- the subject of the invention is an applicator pad for products to be spread comprising a plastic base provided with a support face, and a plastic foam block having a face fixed to the support face of the base in which a heat-fusible film extends between the foam block and the support face of the base and is fixed to the foam block and at the base.
- the heat-fusible film is itself based on polyethylene.
- excellent fixing is achieved by hot bonding of the hot-melt film to the polyurethane foam and then hot welding on the base.
- the foam block comprises at least two parts each having a face extending substantially parallel to the support face of the base and assembled to each other by a film preferably hot-melt based on polyethylene, the block part fixed to the base preferably being closed cells, for example made of polyethylene, the block part fixed to the block part closed cells being preferably open cells by example in expanded polyurethane; preferably the closed cell block portion is about twice the thickness of the open cell block portion.
- Composite structures are thus obtained offering greater comfort of use, the block of foam block with closed polyethylene cells forming an elastic cushion and minimizing, due to the absence of absorption of the product to be spread by this block of foam, the dispersion of the product to be spread during use.
- the foam block comprises a product distribution channel spreading extending in the extension of the distribution channel of the base.
- the block of foam itself comprises a distribution channel extending in the extension of the distribution channel of the base thus the product is spread continuously by distributing it through the buffer as and when required.
- the applicator pad further comprises a valve comprising return means, an operating member extending through the distribution channel, the operating member penetrating inside the foam block over a length at most equal to the thickness of the closed cell block part.
- the valve operating member thus set back relative to the block of open-cell foam allows, at the end of spreading, to empty the block of open-cell foam by applying to the buffer a pressure lower than that permitting the operation of the valve operating member. This avoids drying of the buffers in the mass.
- the foam block has a product spreading face coated with a flocked polyamide substance.
- a better distribution of the product to be spread on this face is obtained.
- FIG. 1 illustrates an applicator pad comprising a base having a support face 3 and a foam block 2 fixed to the base 1 by means of a heat-fusible film 4.
- the base is for example made of injection-molded polyethylene, it comprises a flexible sleeve 5 intended to be introduced as a stopper into an opening of a suitable container containing a product to be spread, for example a bottle or a tube.
- the base 1 is crossed by a distribution channel which opens in the support face 3.
- the foam block is substantially cylindrical and is constituted by a plastic foam with open cells, for example an expanded polyurethane foam provided with a distribution channel 8 extending in the extension of the distribution channel 6 of the base 1.
- This block of foam 2 is obtained by cutting from a plate of foam on which a heat-fusible film 4 for example a film based of polyethylene or equivalent has previously been applied by hot calendering. During this calendering, the film at high temperature is in a phase such that it can penetrate into the pores of the foam and thus achieves a solid bonding.
- the block of foam 2 provided with its heat-fusible film is then applied after heating the heat-fusible film on the support face 3 of the base 1 itself heated so as to obtain the fusion of a surface area of the face support 3 in polyethylene.
- a heat-fusible film 4 is then welded to the support face 3.
- the foam block 2 thus fixed ensures secure assembly with the base 1 whatever the nature of the chemical agents contained in the product to be spread.
- the spreading surface 7 of the foam block 2 can be flocked beforehand to obtain a better distribution of the product on its surface during spreading. It may for example be a polyamide 9 flocking.
- FIG. 2 another applicator pad according to the invention comprising a block of composite foam constituted by a block part 2.1 made of closed cell foam, for example made of expanded polyethylene and by a block part 2.2 made of open cells for example expanded polyurethane as in the case of FIG. 1, assembled to each other by a heat-fusible film based on polyethylene or equivalent;
- the composite foam block is for example obtained by fixing the hot-melt film 10 by hot calendering on a sheet of polyurethane foam as explained above and then by heat sealing the film 10 on a sheet of expanded polyethylene foam.
- the free face of the expanded polyethylene foam is then covered with a polyethylene-based film 4 by hot calendering and the composite sheet obtained is cut according to composite blocks which are assembled to bases by hot welding as explained above.
- This composite structure is also provided with a product distribution channel 8 extending in the extension of the distribution channel 6 of the base 1.
- the block part 2.1 with closed cells has a thickness substantially equal to twice the block part 2.2.
- the two types of foam used have of course a different flexibility because of their structure, in particular the block part 2.2 has greater flexibility than the block part 2.1 which acts only as an elastic cushion.
- This structure has the advantage of avoiding dispersion throughout the buffer of the product to be spread during use (the part of the buffer in contact with the base 1 being constituted by a closed cell foam, therefore waterproof) while while retaining significant user comfort.
- FIG. 3 shows a pad according to Figure 2 equipped with a spring-loaded valve device opposing the free flow of the product.
- the channels 6 and 8 respectively of the base 1 and of the foam block 2 contain a valve 11 having a head 12 and an operating member 13.
- the inlet of the distribution channel 6 serves as a seat for the head 12, which makes body with a return spring 14 with three helical elements.
- the operating member 13 of the valve 11 extends to through channels 6 and 8 and enters the interior of the foam block over a length preferably equal to the thickness of the closed cell foam block portion.
- the buffer is first of all strongly compressed so as to crush the two block parts 2.1 and 2.2.
- the valve then opens and the product to be spread disperses in the open cells of the part of the block 2.2.
- High pressure on the tampon is maintained as long as it is desired to maintain the flow.
- the pressure on the pad is reduced so that the closed cell foam relaxes completely.
- the valve therefore closes and the product contained in the open cell part can be slightly compressed to extract practically all of the product to be spread still available in the applicator pad. This avoids loss of product by drying.
