Definitions
- the present invention relates to a cartridge case, in particular to a shotgun.
- these cases comprise a metal base, generally made of brass-plated steel, carrying the primer in the center of the external face of its bottom, a tubular body generally made of cardboard, or plastic material, assembled, by one of its ends, to the base and a bottom filling part or bottom part, generally made of injected or extruded plastic such as polyethylene, which is intended to improve the assembly of the tubular body with the base, to reinforce the holding of the bottom of the case and, finally, to improve gas tightness at the level of the tubular body / base assembly.
- the manufacture of the base by stamping also contributes to increasing the price of these cases.
- plastic cases have been designed in two parts, a base and a tubular body, assembled together by welding, gluing or the like.
- the bonding does not confer sufficient mechanical strength, we have been reduced to achieve this assembly by welding.
- FR-A-2 309 830 is a socket in three elements, without metal base.
- the method of manufacturing this socket consists in placing in a mold a traditional extruded tube and a bottom piece of injected plastic material and in injecting, between them, a third piece which, by overmolding the first two by the interior ensures their assembly.
- This process therefore requires a complicated overmolding operation and at high cost.
- the bead formed at the base of the tube for its attachment by the rifle extractor does not have sufficient mechanical strength, which frequently leads to shear fractures.
- the present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks.
- the tubular body has an assembly end constricted in a truncated cone
- the base has a frustoconical bore at the same angle at the top as the constricted end of the tubular body to which it is intended to serve as housing
- the bottom part has a frustoconical external profile at the same angle at the apex as the constricted end tubular body and the bore of the base, the respective dimensions of the bore of the base and the bottom part being such that after assembly, the annular interval separating them is of width slightly less than the thickness of the constricted end of the tubular body, means being provided to allow the assembly, by snap-fastening, of the base and the bottom part.
- the bottom of the base has a central circular opening and the bottom part has a cylindrical central boss of the same diameter as the opening of the bottom of the base, capable of being housed in this opening and to be retained therein, by the abovementioned snap-fit assembly means, this boss having a housing for the initiation device intended for this case.
- these snap-fit assembly means can be constituted by an annular rib and groove, of the same cross section, formed one on the cylindrical wall of the boss of the bottom piece and the other on that of the opening of the base and arranged so as to be engaged elastically one on the other when these two parts are presented to each other in the assembly position.
- the tubular body is preferably made of a semi-rigid plastic material such as high density polyethylene, giving it both mechanical characteristics of resistance to compression, tensile and shear, sufficient for its solid assembly to the base. by compression between the bottom part and the bore of the base, sufficient rigidity to hold the charge of powder and lead or other that it must contain, and very satisfactory shooting behavior.
- a semi-rigid plastic material such as high density polyethylene
- the base the collar of which borders its bottom serves as an outlet for the extractor, must be made of a rigid plastic material such as polyoxymethylene, while the bottom part must be made of a sufficiently rigid plastic material for good resistance of assembly by snap-on, but flexible enough to ensure a good seal.
- a plastic material which is perfectly suitable for the production of this part is a polyethylene or a polyamide or a polypropylene.
- the case according to the invention is of the type consisting of three plastic elements, namely a tubular body 2, a base 3 and a bottom piece 4.
- the base 3 is made of a very rigid plastic material such as polyoxymethylene.
- the bottom 3c of this base 3 also has a circular central opening 5, of cylindrical shape and comprising, projecting from its cylindrical surface, an annular rib 6 of cross section in a right triangle, so as to present, on the side of the bore conical 3b, an insertion ramp 6a and, on the side of the external face of the bottom 3c, a catch notch 6b.
- the bottom part 4, shown in FIG. 3, has a frustoconical external profile with the same angle at the top A as the constricted end 2a of the tubular body 2 and that the bore 3b of the base 3.
- This bottom piece 4 has, on the side of its end 4a of small diameter, a cylindrical boss 7 of the same diameter and the same length as the opening 5 of the bottom 3c of the base 3 which is intended to serve as housing.
- This boss 7 has an annular groove 8 of section complementary to that of the rib 6 and arranged so as to be able to be engaged one on the other when the boss 7 of the bottom part 4 is itself fully engaged in the opening 5 of the bottom 3c of the base 3.
- This arrangement allows snap-fitting assembly of the bottom part 4 to the base 3.
- the respective dimensions of the bottom piece 4 and of the bore 3b of the base 3 are determined in such a way that, when the bottom part 4 is assembled as indicated above in the base 3, there remains between the bore 3b and the bottom piece 4, a frustoconical annular space of width slightly less than the thickness of the wall of the constricted end 2a of the tubular body 2.
- This arrangement is intended to allow, by the snap-fitting assembly of the base 3 and of the bottom part 4, good anchoring of the constricted end 2a of the tubular body 2 in the aforementioned space.
- the bottom piece 4 it is advantageous for the bottom piece 4 to have a certain elasticity allowing it to compensate for the differences between the wall thickness of the constricted end 2a of the tubular body 2 and the annular thickness made to receive it.
- the bottom part 4 is advantageously made of a slightly flexible and elastic plastic material such as a polyethylene, a polyamide or a polypropylene.
- This elastic flexibility of the bottom piece 4 has, moreover, the advantage of providing an excellent seal at the level of the assembly of the three elements 2, 3 and 4.
- the flexibility and elasticity characteristics of the bottom piece 4 are improved by providing its outer wall with grooves or annular teeth 4b of triangular cross section.
- the bottom part 4 has, on the side of its large diameter end 4c and as is known per se, a frustoconical recess 9 and the boss 7 has a cylindrical central opening 11, communicating with the aforementioned recess 9 and intended to serve housing to the device for priming the cartridge formed with this case.
- the bottom part 4 is provided with an annular lip 12 bordering the inner end of the well 11 which is intended to serve as a housing for the initiation of the cartridge.
- the purpose of the presence of this lip 12 is to improve the seal against the combustion gases of the powder between the primer and the wall of the well 11, which not only improves the yield of the cartridge but also reduces the risks of expulsion of the primer.
- This case also has the advantage of allowing, with total freedom, the assembly of tubular bodies and bases of different colors, which, by adopting a specific color code, facilitates the distinction between different cartridges .
