- the invention relates to a homogenizer for the production of a flowable product such as an emulsion or the like with a stator which is driven by a motor and has rotor blades, which surrounds the rotor and through which the material flows from the inside to the outside.
- Homogenizers of this type work to produce an intensive homogenization with strong turbulence and thus unfavorable flow conditions, so that relatively high drive energies are required for processing highly viscous products. Because of these turbulences, such homogenizers produce only a very slight pumping action, so that additional pumps must be used to circulate the flowable product or additional blades or the like are attached to the rotor of the homogenizer in order to improve the pumping action (DE-OS 34 17 242). However, such solutions or special constructions mean a relatively high outlay, a complication of the homogenizer and a possibly increased susceptibility to failure.
- the present invention is based on the object of proposing a homogenizer with which it is possible to easily switch to a higher pumping action without this requiring more effort.
- a homogenizer of the type mentioned at the outset which is characterized in that the rotor can be driven both in one and in the other direction of rotation and in that the conveying surfaces of the rotor blades are shaped in relation to the flow openings of the stator in such a way that one direction of rotation the flow of the flowable product occurs approximately at right angles to the walls of the flow openings and an optimal homogenization effect is achieved, but in the other direction of rotation is directed in the direction of the flow openings and achieves an optimal pumping effect.
- This solution has the significant advantage that it is possible to switch the homogenizer to pump operation in a very simple manner, namely when driven by an electric motor in an electrical manner, without having to operate valves or the like. Since homogenizers are already designed for these high outputs due to the high drive power required for homogenization, very high pump outputs can be achieved after switching the direction of rotation.
- An advantageous embodiment is characterized in that the rotor blades are provided with first conveying surfaces which are effective in one direction of rotation and are designed for homogenization and with second conveying surfaces which are effective in the other direction of rotation and are designed for optimal pumping.
- the homogenizer is preferably designed in such a way that the first conveying surfaces of the rotor blades run approximately radially and that the second conveying surfaces have a spiral course with a continuously decreasing distance from the stator when rotating in the other direction of rotation.
- the first and second conveying surfaces of the rotor blades are preferably shaped such that their directional components are approximately perpendicular to one another in the two directions of rotation. Such an extreme shape has the effect that during the homogenization operation there is practically only turbulence and homogenization without any appreciable pumping action, while the optimal flow conditions are present during the pumping operation, so that high pumping capacities can be achieved with relatively low energy.
- the stator expediently has a plurality of guide blades distributed around the circumference, the flow openings of which run approximately parallel to the directional components in pumping operation in the other direction of rotation.
- the flow resistances are minimized by this design, while in the homogenizing operation the directional components strike the walls at the flow openings approximately at right angles, which leads to strong turbulence and effective homogenization.
- Another embodiment is characterized in that the rotor has a plurality of radially inclined rotor blades and the stator has a plurality of radially inclined guide vanes, that the inclination of the rotor blades is opposite to the inclination of the stator blades, preferably two sets of each Rotor blades and two sets of vanes are provided.
- Such a homogenizer which can be switched over to pumping operation can expediently be used for pumping off the flowable product after homogenization has been completed by reversing the direction of rotation of the rotor and switching over to a drain.
- Such an insert is particularly simple to set up in terms of system and has the advantage over the use of an additional pump that the device that is not required in each case does not have to be shut down and possibly cleaned before being put back into operation.
- the homogenizer according to the invention can, however, also be used particularly simply for circulating the flowable product or for adding an additional component to the product while reversing the direction of rotation of the rotor.
- an additional component is added, a homogenization operation is usually not necessary, so that the high pumping power of the switched homogenizer leads to a high circulation and thus mixing speed.

- the homogenizer is to be given a slight pumping action, then the first conveying surface 12 or the walls 23 of the stator 2 are designed to be slightly different from a perpendicular relationship to one another in order to achieve a larger outwardly directed component. It is also possible to provide a deviation from the optimal pumping action in the operating mode according to FIG. 4 if a slight swirl is desirable.
- Fig. 5 it is shown how with the homogenizer according to the invention, consisting of the rotor 1, the stator 2, the drive shaft 4 and a drive motor 7, a simple switchover from the homogenizing operation to pumping or circulation can take place. Only a three-way valve 8 is required to control these processes, but no additional pumps or shut-off valves. If the outlet 6 of the homogenizer is connected to a return 9 to a mixing container via the three-way valve 8, the homogenization operation takes place in one direction of rotation, the flowable product leaving the outlet 6 being reintroduced into the mixing container 10 via the return 9.
- the three-way valve 8 is switched over and the homogenizer is operated in the reverse direction of rotation of the motor 7 (pump operation). In this case, the flowable product flows from the outlet 6 via the three-way valve 8 to the outlet 20.

This means that the inclination of the rotor blades 11a and 11b is opposite to the inclination of the stator blades 21a and 21b.
- Both embodiments have in common that the homogenizer is designed in such a way that in one direction of rotation there are optimal conditions for effective homogenization, while in the opposite direction of rotation optimal flow conditions are set for an optimal pumping action.
