Description

The invention relates to a method for applying a liquid or pasty substance to a material web which is moved past an application unit and then past a doctor device. Furthermore, the invention relates to a device for applying a liquid or pasty substance to a material web, consisting of transport means for the material web, an application unit for the substance and a doctor device having several doctor units.

In a known method and a known device, the application strength of the substance is set in such a way that a doctor unit is brought into the working position by several doctor units available. The various doctor units are arranged in a revolver-type doctor device. In order to change the doctor blade, it is necessary to transport the Stopping the material web, because with an uninterrupted transport, a relatively large length of material web would pass the doctoring device unswept in the phase in which the one doctor unit is brought out of its working position and the new doctor unit has not yet been brought into the working position, and would therefore be a committee. By reducing the transport speed or interrupting the transport during the doctor blade change, this reject length can be shortened considerably. But even when the transport is interrupted, the material web has errors at the point where the doctor blade change takes place. Because of the error concentrated on one spot, the doctor blade change seems to be most suitable when the material web transport is interrupted, but interrupting the transport of the material web brings other problems. To a small extent, this also applies to a reduced transport speed. If the transport speed is reduced, different application conditions result on the doctor unit, because of which the application thickness changes. Since the web of material often runs through a dryer, the temperature of which provides a certain drying capacity taking into account the transport speed, it is necessary to lower the temperature of the dryer accordingly at a reduced transport speed. This is associated with considerable effort and can not be achieved in a short time, but only gradually. It is generally not possible to stop the transport because, even when the temperature is reduced, the temperature level is still high, which leads to overdrying of the material web.

The invention has for its object to provide a method and an apparatus for applying a liquid or pasty substance to a material web, in which or during which application errors do not occur during the doctor blade change and possibly subsequent treatment Stations of the material web can continue to be operated unchanged during the doctor blade change.

This object is achieved in the method in that two doctor units arranged one behind the other in the direction of movement are used for a doctor blade change, of which during continuous transport of the material web the doctor unit located in the working position is only brought into the rest position when the other doctor unit in the rest position is in the working position brought. In terms of the device, this object is achieved in that the doctor device has two doctor units which are arranged one behind the other in the transport direction of the material web and are assigned to the same treatment section of the material web and which can be adjusted independently of one another on the material web.

Since a squeegee unit is always fully used in the invention, there is no section which is not squeegee during uninterrupted material web transport. A section is squeegeeed twice during the squeegee change, but this does not lead to a surface defect on the squeegee side of the material web. Since the individual squeegee units are brought into the working position and the rest position when the material web is continuously transported, there are no striking engagement and disengagement points even for the discharge-side squeegee unit, rather these areas are ground and therefore do not appear as surface defects. Since the doctor units can be adjusted independently of one another, the doctor device also enables operation with two doctor units in use at the same time.

The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to a drawing schematically illustrating an exemplary embodiment.

A material web 1 is transported in the direction of arrow 2 by transport means, not shown. It is fed by means of a guide roller 3 to an applicator unit 4, which consists of an applicator roller 5, a trough 6 filled with the substance to be applied and two pre-metering devices 7, 8 in the form of rollers that can be adjusted to the gap to the applicator roller 5. The application roller 5 is immersed in part in the substance to be applied. Depending on the direction of rotation of the application roller 5, one or the other metering device 7, 8 is employed. A squeegee device 9 is arranged directly downstream of application unit 4. This doctor device 9 consists of two doctor units. Each doctor unit has a doctor rod 12, 13 mounted in a height-adjustable receptacle 10, 11 and a height-adjustable pressure plate 14, 15 on the uncoated material web side. The two doctor units 10, 12, 14 and 11, 13, 15 can be set independently of one another on the material web 1.
