Abstract

The sheet-metal blank has a tear-off strip (2) running between two predetermined breaking lines (3, 4), these lines (3, 4) extending into the tongue (5). For this purpose, the tongue (5) is made wider than the tear-off strip (2). Thus a can, produced from the blank by welding, can be opened without problem, i.e. without the risk of destroying the tear-off strip just after the weld is broken. <IMAGE>

Description

US-A-1 568 438.The present invention relates to a tin can with a welded side pinch or overlap seam, which is provided with a circumferential tear strip formed between two essentially parallel pre-scored predetermined breaking lines; see e.g. US-A-1 568 438.

A problem with tin cans of this type is the application of a tear strip which, despite the side weld seam, can be opened easily and securely using a key.

In the embodiments known today, in which the tongue forming the start of the tear strip has the same width as the actual tear strip running between the scoring lines, it is shown time and again that after the weld seam has been overcome (due to its mechanical destruction) there is a risk that the actual crack line does not run along the predetermined breaking lines, but at least one of the two crack lines runs away from the pre-scored predetermined breaking line. Such unwanted tear lines always run in a triangular shape, either to the second predetermined breaking line or to the second unwanted crack line. Of course, the tear-off strip is destroyed prematurely and a further opening of the tin can is no longer possible without additional tools.

The object of the present invention is now to create a tin can with tear strips, which solves this problem in a simple manner satisfactorily while maintaining the quality of the side weld seam.

In the case of a tin can of the type mentioned, this solution consists in that the tongue, at least in the vicinity of the weld seam, is wider than the subsequent tear strip and that the two pre-scored breaking lines are extended into the tongue.

Thanks to this design of the tin can, outside the area of the tongue, when it is formed, a good weld with a high degree of homogeneity of the weld metal can be achieved by means of a side pinch or lap seam. A cold weld occurs in the area of the tongue or tear strip, since the increased contact area at this point increases the transition resistance. The emergence of this cold welding enables the cans to be opened easily.

The safe execution of the welding in the area of the tongue can be guaranteed with a suitable welding current program (increased current for a limited time, i.e. in the tongue area).

Thanks to the predetermined breaking lines already present in the widened tongue, which run practically rectilinearly through the weld seam, the actual crack lines initially run inwards, but ultimately end on the pre-scored predetermined breaking lines.

  • Fig. 1 eine Draufsicht auf einen zur Herstellung einer erfindungsgemässen Dose ausgebildeten Blechzuschnitt;
  • Fig. 2 eine mit dem Blechzuschnitt nach Fig. 1 hergestellte Bleckzarge;
  • Fig. 3 einen Schnitt entlang der Linie A-A von Fig. 2;
  • Fig. 5 einen vergrösserten Ausschnitt aus Fig. 2.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to an embodiment shown in the drawing. It shows:
  • 1 shows a plan view of a sheet metal blank designed for producing a can according to the invention;
  • FIG. 2 shows a sheet metal frame produced with the sheet metal blank according to FIG. 1;
  • 3 shows a section along the line AA of FIG. 2.
  • Fig. 4 is a section along the line BB of Fig. 2, and
  • 5 shows an enlarged detail from FIG. 2.

Die beiden vorgeritzten Sollbruchlinien 3, 4 sind bis in die Zunge 5 hinein verlängert.FIG. 1 of the drawing shows a sheet metal blank 1 designed to produce a can according to the invention, in which two predetermined breaking lines 3, 4 running parallel over the entire width of the blank are pre-scored to form a later tear strip 2. Such cracks preferably have a V-shaped cross section and their greatest depth lies approximately in the middle of the sheet thickness (depending on the sheet thickness). The tear strip 2 formed between the predetermined breaking lines 3, 4 has, for the purpose of tearing open, a tongue 5 which is wider than the subsequent actual tear strip 2. The two pre-scored breaking lines 3, 4 are extended into the tongue 5.

A sheet metal frame 6 (FIG. 2), formed by means of the blank 1 by welding, is used to manufacture a can (by attaching it, a base and, after filling, a lid). The can is opened by means of a key (not shown), which is attached to the tongue 5, by tearing open the pre-scored tear strip 2 in a manner known per se.

Hinter der durchgehenden Schweissnaht 7 steht frei die Zunge 5 ab (sie liegt mehr oder weniger dicht an der darunterliegenden Zargenwand 1 an).FIG. 2 of the drawing shows a can frame 6 formed from the sheet metal blank 1 by welding a side pinch or overlap seam 7.

Dank dieser Kaltschweissung lässt sich später die Dose problemlos öffnen.FIGS. 3 and 4 show sections through the frame wall in the area of the weld seam 7, FIG. 3 showing the very homogeneous weld in the normal overlap sector, while FIG. 4 shows the seam 7 in the sector of the tongue 5. In this sector there is a cold welding, since the larger resistance increases the transition resistance due to the tongue 5. Thanks to this cold welding, the can can be opened later without any problems.

The safe execution of the cold welding is guaranteed with a suitable welding current program, thanks to which the welding current can be increased in the sector of the tongue 5.

4.Figure 5 shows a detail of the frame 6 of Figure 2 on an enlarged scale. This shows how the weld seam 7 is broken or torn when the tongue 5 is raised for the purpose of opening the can. The corresponding possible tear lines (shown in dashed lines), starting from the outer edge of the tongue 5, run through the weld seam 7 inwards and ends securely in the scored lines 3 and 4.

The cans designed according to the invention with a cold welding point as an opening gap can be used in the field of technical packaging, possibly also in the food sector.
