Definitions
- the present invention was made as part of a collaboration between the acoustic laboratory of the University of Maine, unit associated with the National Center for Scientific Research No. 1101 and the Institute for Research and Coordination Acoustic Music.
- the present invention relates to devices for obtaining quarter-tones and other micro-intervals on wind musical instruments with side holes and more particularly, instruments with a flute mouthpiece or reed instruments such as the clarinets, saxophones, oboe and bassoons.
- Patent FR-A-2 529 364 (ESTABLISHMENT E.FERRON) relates to a method for improving the emission of predetermined notes from a wind instrument, that is to say from certain notes which are difficult to execute.
- the object of the present invention is to remedy the drawbacks indicated above, by providing devices which make it possible to translate the entire range of an instrument, in particular a quarter tone, in a simple manner by eliminating any complicated fingering.
- the subject of the present invention is a device for obtaining quarter-tones and other micro-intervals on wind musical instruments with side holes, comprising for each register of the instrument at least one auxiliary tube which is mounted bypass at the in the vicinity of the head of the instrument and a manually operated mechanism for closing or opening the auxiliary tube, characterized in that said mechanism closes or opens said auxiliary tube at its first end in contact with the instrument or at its second end facing outwards and in that the dimensions of said tube are such that the range of the instrument is translated from the micro-interval selected by the action of the mechanism. Thanks to this device we obtain a surprising result, never before achieved, namely the translation of the whole range of a wind instrument. This translation which is performed instantly even during the performance of a piece of music, allows to double the number of playable notes.
- the present invention overcomes the prejudice generally accepted by many musicians that it was inconceivable to place an open auxiliary tube without significantly disturbing the playing of the instrument. Indeed, physical theories suggest that, to some extent, the introduction of such an open tube causes disturbances inversely proportional to its length.
- auxiliary tubes are used mounted in bypass in the vicinity of the head of the flute and a mechanism making it possible to close each auxiliary tube at its first end in contact with the instrument and to open it to its second end facing outwards.
- each of the two auxiliary tubes is mounted between the mouthpiece and the trill key, for the first register its section S and its height h are such that S h is between 0.2 and 0.7 mm with h between 30 and 110 mm, which results in a diameter d between 2.7 and 9.9 mm for its diameter.
- its section S and its height h are such that S h is between 1 and 2.5 mm with h between 10 and 40 mm, which results in a diameter between 3.5 and 11.3 mm for its diameter.
- the device of a clarinet comprises at least one auxiliary tube mounted on the barrel, on the spout or on the upper part of the body and a mechanism making it possible to close the tube or tubes at least at one or the other of their ends. .
- the device comprises an auxiliary tube corresponding to the first register which is mounted on the barrel or on the upper part of the upper body. and whose volume is between 2 and 5 cm3, and an auxiliary tube corresponding to the second register which is mounted on the barrel, the spout or the upper body and whose volume is between 1 and 4 cm3.
- a manually controlled mechanism makes it possible to close the tube at least at one or the other of its two ends, and possibly in an intermediate position between its two ends.
- the device comprises: an auxiliary tube for the first register which is mounted on the jar, its section and its height are such that S h is between 0.08 and 0.3 mm with h between 10 and 250 mm, which results in a diameter between 1.4 and 6.2 mm for its diameter.
- the device also includes a first tube which corresponds to the second register and which is mounted on the first half of the jar which adjoins the spout, its section and its height are such that S h is between 0.15 and 0.5 mm and its height is between 10 and 50 mm, which results in a diameter d between 1.4 and 5.6 mm for its diameter and a second tube for the second register which is mounted on the second half of the jar or on the upper body, its section and height are such that S h is between 0.7 and 2.6 mm with h between 5 and 20 mm, which results in a diameter between 2.1 and 8.1 mm for its diameter.
- the calculation of the dimensions of the device depends on the register considered and on the micro-interval selected. This micro-interval is defined by a relative increase in frequency A or a relative decrease in frequency D.
- the table below gives the values of A and D for the main intervals: Interval AT D 1/8 0.0145 0.0143 1/4 0.0253 0.0285 1/3 0.0393 0.0378 1/2 0.0595 0.0561 2/3 0.0801 0.07413 1 0.1225 0.1091 for an interval of one tenth of a tone
- the nth register of such an instrument corresponds to a frequency interval ranging from f min (low) to f max (high).
- Instrument 1st register 2nd register Flute C serious to C # medium D medium at treble # Oboe sib serious to C # medium D medium at treble # Saxophone sib serious to C # medium re medium to high # fa Bassoon low to medium bass F II medium at high F Clarinet E low to low Bb if medium with high C
- the notes indicated are the notes written on the score, and not the notes heard.
- instruments of the same non-transposing family such as flute, oboe, bassoon, simply translate the notes given here.
- This tube of height h and of section S must be such that its acoustic "inertia” (see below) is worth: where S is the internal section of the instrument at the place where the open tube is placed, the air density being estimated equal to 1 for reasons of simplification.
- the quantity S / h about the flute is a simplification of the quantity: which is the inverse of the acoustic "inertia" L, a quantity representing the inertia of the air in the tube (cf. BERANEK, ACOUSTICS, 1954, P. 131, MC GRAW HILL, NEW YORK).

- Each piston P1, P2 moves between a position for closing the opening 54, 55 where the auxiliary tube 50, 52 opens and a position where it abuts against the bottom 58, 60 of the tube and where a certain volume V of the tube is in communication with the air column of the clarinet.
- the device according to the invention comprises three tubes: one of them has been shown diagrammatically in FIG. 8. It can be seen that the tube 70 is mounted perpendicular to the axis of the saxophone. This tube is traversed internally by a piston 72 which functions in a similar manner to the pistons of the flute between a position where the opening 74 is closed and a position where the piston is completely out of the tube.
- the two registers are raised by a quarter of a tone as shown by curves 11a and 11b respectively.

Description
Intervalle A D 1/8 0,0145 0,0143 1/4 0,0253 0,0285 1/3 0,0393 0,0378 1/2 0,0595 0,0561 2/3 0,0801 0,07413 1 0,1225 0,1091
- les figures 1 et 2 sont respectivement des vues de côté et de derrière d'un élément de cornemuse hongroise de type connu ;
- les figures 3, 4 et 5 représentent respectivement une flûte, une clarinette et un saxophone ;
- la figure 6 représente schématiquement une flûte et des mécanismes d'ouverture et de fermeture de tubes auxiliaires ;
- la figure 7 représente schématiquement une clarinette équipée de deux tubes auxiliaires ;
- la figure 8 représente schématiquement un saxophone et un tube auxiliaire ;
- les figures 9a et 9b représentent des courbes de variations de la hauteur tonale respectivement pour le premier et le second registres de la flûte traversière ;
- les figures 10a et 10b représentent des courbes de variations de la hauteur tonale respectivement pour le premier et le second registres de la clarinette en si bémol ;
