Abstract

1. Method of use of a firelighting fluid consisting of alcohol and a thickening agent for igniting coal and wood, the fluid being characterized by a content of 10 to 20% by volume water, 0,3 to 6% by weight of the thickening agent and rest alcohol.

Description

The invention relates to the use of a fuel liquid made of alcohol and a thickener for igniting coal and wood.

Coal and wood lighters for a grill or fireplace are available in various forms, for example as fuel pastes made from methylated spirit and colloidal silica, as fiber plates soaked in wax, as petroleum-based fuel oil or in the form of methylated spirit.

It is a dimensionally stable gel, using methyl cellulose as a thickening agent, which is known to form a real stable gel. 3 to 50% by weight of methyl cellulose is added, the amount depending on the degree of methylation in order to obtain the required gel-forming viscosity. This patent describes a fuel which retains a shape once it has been obtained and which does not melt during combustion. Such yellow fuels can also be used as firelighters for coal and wood in a grill or a fireplace. However, they have the same disadvantages as known lighters, namely pastes and impregnated fiberboard. Due to the consistency of such products, they are localized to certain places, which only ignites the adjacent coal and wood particles. In addition, most of these more or less solid igniters do not burn residue-free and undesirable cracking substances can occur. The same applies to fuel oils. Methylated spirits as igniters wet the coal and wood pieces, but they evaporate and burn to develop a sufficient ignition effect and there is also the risk of deflagration and "fueling".

The object of the invention is to provide a safe liquid ignition aid which is used to ignite coal and wood and which ensures a flat and continuous wetting and thereby a sufficiently long burning to ignite the coal and wood pieces.

This object is achieved by using a fuel liquid mentioned at the outset, which is characterized by a content of 10 to 30% by volume of water, 0.3 to 6% by weight of thickener and the rest of alcohol.

Appropriate further developments of the fuel liquid are characterized in the subclaims.

In contrast to the dimensionally stable fuel gel known from US-A-2 613 142, the fuel liquid used according to the invention consists of phlegmatized alcohol, which may contain a thickener but is still a liquid. It has been found that the addition of water achieves a certain degree of desensitization of the alcohol and slows down its rate of combustion. By adding a thickening agent, the alcohol to be burned off becomes more viscous, thereby avoiding the "spriting" - that is, the rapid divergence - of the fuel liquid on the pieces of coal and wood to be ignited, as well as on their base, and the spontaneous evaporation and burning that occurs with pure alcohol. This addition also has a desensitizing effect and also saves fuel. With 40 to 50 ml of the desensitized fuel liquid, practically any quantity of charcoal can be lit reliably and made to glow. The fuel liquid is expediently produced from substances which are to be described as highly pure, so that it can be assumed that no physiologically harmful cracking substances are produced during combustion which are disadvantageous in terms of smell, taste and / or health. Switching off such side effects is particularly important when used as a grill lighter. The desensitized fuel liquid according to the invention burns practically without residue. The viscosity of the fuel can be adjusted as required by the thickener. In any case, it should still be sufficiently liquid to flow apart on the pieces of coal and wood to be ignited and to wet them essentially uniformly. This ensures that the fuel liquid between the coal and wood particles burns off relatively slowly and ignites them. Due to the water evaporating during the burning process, the burning mass is constantly cooled, which evaporates more slowly and consequently burns more slowly. It has been observed that the desensitized burning liquid burns with smaller flames than pure alcohol. The viscosity of preferred preparations is chosen so that they can be dispensed through dispensing openings of bottles with special closures, for example safety closures, with flexible, compressible walls. In this way, the amount dispensed can be easily metered by the consumer.

It has been found that isopropanol is particularly suitable as a desensitized fuel. Its calorific value with the addition of 15 vol.% Water corresponds to that of commercially available methylated spirit. Hydroxypropyl cellulose and polyethylene oxide are suitable as thickeners with the desired properties, namely largely or completely residue-free burning and avoidance of undesirable disadvantageous cracking substances.

The following experiments illustrate the advantageous results that can be achieved with phlegmatized alcohol, in particular isopropanol.

The experiments show that even phlegmatized methylated alcohol runs far less and burns more than twice as long as pure methylated spirit.

Excellent results are achieved with isopropanol, with optimal results being observed with a water addition of 10 to 15% water and 0.40 to 0.50% hydroxypropyl cellulose. A mixture of hydroxypropyl cellulose and polyethylene oxide also gives very good values.
