Abstract

The bracelet comprises elements (1A-1C, 2A-2C), preferably rectangular or square which are arranged in a plurality of rows (A, B, C,...). Each element (1A,..., 2B,...) is comprised of an upper element (4) which has pillars (7) as well as a central abutment (8), as well as of a bottom plate (5) connected to the free end of the pillars (7). Meshes (9) act as link members; each mesh (9) has an opening (10) to which it may bind two adjacent pillars of two neighbouring upper elements (4). The opening (10) is so dimensioned with respect to pillars (7) and the distance thereof are such that a play is provided between the mesh and the two elements in all directions, thereby providing an ample flexibility to the bracelet.

Description

The subject of the invention is a bracelet for watches or jewelry, comprising several parallel longitudinal rows, each row being composed of elements which, in the longitudinal direction of the bracelet, are interconnected in a flexible manner by meshes, the elements of two adjacent rows being interconnected in transverse direction by other meshes, each element consisting of an upper element formed by a top equipped with pillars as well as a bottom plate connected to the free ends of the pillars.

Such a bracelet is already known from document DE-A-1 460 162, in which links for assembling decorative objects, in particular bands or chains used in jewelry, are illustrated. Each link is flexibly connected to a neighboring link by a connecting member or mesh, these connections being possible both in the transverse and longitudinal direction. Each link consists of an upper element comprising pillars extending towards a bottom plate which is connected to the free ends of them. To make this connection, the bottom plate is provided with the corresponding mouths in which these ends fit. Consequently, the bottom plate necessarily has a certain thickness which can no longer be reduced, and for reasons of symmetry the upper elements have the same thickness, which makes the link heavy, therefore less elegant for the intended purpose. The meshes connecting these links or elements are thin plates, carrying openings which correspond to the diameter of the pillars. Because the upper element and the bottom plate, due to their thickness, must be assembled very close to each other, and in view of the diameter of the openings adapted to the pillars, there is practically no play between the links, especially not in the direction perpendicular to the plane of said links. However, such play is essential if one wishes to use them for a bracelet in which, by wearing it on the arm, each link in a row is in a plane different from that of the adjacent elements.

To ensure this play, provision has already been made to connect the elements by axes or transverse bars, but these bars allow an angular position of the neighboring elements only in the same row and not between adjacent rows; moreover, such a measurement requires a shift of the elements of a row relative to those of the adjacent rows.

The invention aims to remedy these drawbacks and to create a bracelet in which the flexibility of the adjacent elements or flexibility is ensured not only in the longitudinal but also transverse direction, while keeping the thickness of each element to a minimum.

Another object of the invention is to simplify the manufacture of the bracelet by providing constituent elements which are composed of a minimum of parts.

These objects are achieved by the bracelet according to the invention which is defined in claim 1.

A preferred embodiment of the bracelet according to the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which illustrate
  • Fig. 1 a partial view of a strand of the bracelet,
  • Fig. 2 a section of an upper element along the line Il - Il of FIG. 3,
  • Fig. 3 a view of this element from above,

  • Fig. 5 the bottom plate of an element, and
  • Fig. 6 a side view of two elements of the inner row of the strand.

1, the bracelet which is attached by its strands to a watch 1 in a known manner (and, therefore, illustrated only in a schematic manner) is composed of several rows A, B, C, etc., in the example three rows, each row composed of elements 1, 2. 3, etc. Said elements 1, 2, 3, etc. are in this embodiment, rectangular and arranged in such a way that their longer edges lie side by side. This arrangement differs from the known art in which the elements of a row, for example of row B, are found, in the longitudinal direction, offset with respect to the elements of adjacent rows A and C, in order to allow the front ends elements of these rows and the rear ends of the elements of row B to be connected by a bar or a rigid transverse axis around which all the elements which are connected to it can pivot, to ensure the necessary flexibility of the bracelet; identical bars or axes are also provided for the rear ends of the elements in rows A, C and the front ends of the elements in row B.

2, 3 and 5, each element 1, 2, 3 of the longitudinal rows A, B, C etc. consists only of two parts, namely an upper element 4 and a bottom plate 5, which makes these elements very simple and easy to produce. The upper element 4 which forms the visible face of the bracelet (when worn) includes a top 6, a number of pillars 7, here four, which are attached perpendicularly to the underside of the top 5, and a central stop 8. The pillars 7 are, in this embodiment, in the middle of each edge of the top 6 and are of a height H. They can have a generally square section, with a rounded edge (for manufacturing reasons) as illustrated , or any other appropriate section. The central stop 8, which preferably has the same section or a section similar to that of the pillars 7, is of a height h which is reduced, in comparison with the height H of the pillars. The difference in these heights preferably corresponds to the thickness d (see fig. 6) of the bottom plate 5.

The pillars 7 are intended to receive meshes 9 serving as connecting members between the elements 1, 2, 3 etc., both in the longitudinal direction of the bracelet, and in the transverse direction. These meshes have a substantially annular shape, preferably they are plates in which an opening 10 is made. This opening 10 is of sufficient length to accommodate together two adjacent pillars 7 of two neighboring elements with longitudinal play. The width of the opening 10 exceeds the width of the pillars so that there is also lateral play with respect to the respective element, which allows a limited lateral offset among said neighboring elements.

In order to prevent the meshes 9 from coming out of the pillars 7, the bottom plate 5 is provided with notches 11 which have such dimensions and are arranged in such a way along its edges that the bottom plate 5 can fit into the free ends 12 of the pillars 7 to which it is connected, in particular by welding.

The longitudinal play between each link 9 and the two pillars-7 surrounded by it provides the bracelet with the necessary flexibility in the longitudinal direction. This flexibility is further assisted by the fact that the bottom plates 5 have dimensions, at least in the longitudinal direction of the bracelet, slightly less than those of the top 6 of the upper elements 4. The lateral play increases the general flexibility of the bracelet. However, these two games are not enough yet. The flexibility also depends on the fact that the meshes can take an inclined position towards at least one of the adjacent elements, as can be seen in FIG. 6, and it is therefore essential that the stop 8 has a certain height in order to maintain the top 6 and the bottom plate 5 sufficiently separated from each other. The stop 8 therefore serves as a distance element.

As already mentioned and as illustrated in fig. 1, the meshes 9 are used not only to link the elements consisting of a longitudinal row A, B, C, but also to link the neighboring elements of two adjacent rows, and in this way we also obtain transverse rows. For the two outer rows of the strand, in the example rows A and C, one could provide only three pillars 7 and three notches 9 in the bottom plates 5 of each element, because there are no meshes 9 the along the edges of the bracelet. However, for reasons of simplicity of manufacture, it is advantageous to produce only one kind of elements 4, therefore with four pillars and notches, as illustrated.

The elements can have any shape, in addition to the rectangular or square shape already mentioned, the shape adopted depending on the aesthetic point of view. One could therefore provide round, elliptical, diamond, trapezoidal or generally polygonal elements, or square elements could be provided but placed at 45 degrees from the position illustrated in the drawing for the rectangular elements; the pillars must then be placed at the corners of the square. One could even foresee, if the price of the bracelet does not play a role, completely irregular shapes and sizes. Such a bracelet would look like a leather bracelet, in particular crocodile leather. However, the rectangular or square elements 4 in their illustrated position have the advantage that they hide the connecting members or meshes 9 in the best way, even if they do not have the same thickness.
