Abstract

One stack space is provided for accommodating each stack of a plurality of stacks of printed products to be supplied to the processing line. Each stack space is provided with a powered feed mechanism which urges the associated stack toward a predetermined processing location, such as a product singling or supply device for singly transferring printed products to the processing line. To be able to prepare the supply of printed products at a location remote from or independent of the processing line, a plurality of transportable winding frames are provided. The winding frames are equipped for exchangeably accommodating a wound package of mutually identical printed products. The winding frames are provided with drive and conveying means which drive the wound package in an unwinding direction and convey the printed products unwinding from the printed package to a transfer location. The winding frames are each selectively connectible to any one of the feed mechanisms, while a drive member of the feed mechanism can be simultaneously coupled to a drive member of the drive and conveying means.

Description

The invention relates to a device for feeding printed products to a continuously working processing line according to the preamble of claim 1, and a method for operating the device.

Such processing lines, for example collating devices, saddle stitches and the like, generally have a plurality of stacking spaces which are arranged comparatively in close succession along the processing line, such as, for. B. is known from US-A-3 552 943. These stacking spaces have a relatively limited capacity and, if the continuous mode of operation is not to be interrupted, are to be refilled as soon as the supply in one of the stacking spaces is running low. This requires a considerable amount of work, especially in the case of stacking rooms with a lot of space, even if this is partly carried out mechanically. In itself, the capacity of the stacking space could be increased in order to extend the time until the contents of a stacking space are exhausted. On the other hand, most of the stacking rooms are set up to hold lying piles with standing printed products (also known as “bars” in technical jargon), which makes it easier to dismantle the stack, for example. In this case, however, an increase in the capacity of the stacking space would lead to a corresponding lengthening of the stacking space in the horizontal direction and thus to an increase in the floor space requirement.

It is therefore a purpose of the invention to provide a device of the type mentioned, in which, in principle, without increasing the size of the stacking spaces and without changing the arrangement essentially given by the processing line, the stacking spaces can be supplied with printed products over a longer period of time, which in turn can be remote can be provided from the stacking rooms into the formation suitable for supplying the stacking rooms.

For this purpose, the proposed device has the features defined in the characterizing part of patent claim 1.

It should be noted that the term “winding of printed products” means that formation for storing printed products that can be produced, for example, using the device described in DE-OS-31 23 888. In principle, it is a spirally wound scale formation, with a winding tape being coiled between the winding turns, which holds the winding together.

Since in the proposed device the drive and conveying means of a winding frame connected to a replenishment mechanism are coupled to the drive of the latter, replenishment to the stacking spaces takes place in accordance with the drive speed of the replenishment mechanism in question.

Features of preferred embodiments of the proposed device can be found in the dependent claims. The invention is described in more detail below, for example, with reference to the drawing. It shows:
  • FIG. 1 shows a schematic end view of a device assigned to a saddle stitcher,
  • FIG. 2 shows a schematic plan view of a part of FIG. 1, in which a winding frame carrying a full winding is about to be connected to the replenishment mechanism of one of the stacking spaces,
  • FIG. 3 on a larger scale a schematic side view of a winding frame carrying a full winding, indicating its drive and conveying means, and
  • Figure 4 on the scale of Fig. 3 is a schematic side view of an empty winding frame, the drive and conveying means are only very schematically indicated.

The device 10 shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 is installed here purely, for example, on a saddle stitcher 11 which is only shown schematically. It has a plurality of stacking spaces arranged in a comparatively dense arrangement along the saddle stitcher 11, of which the stacking spaces 12, 13, 14 are shown. The stacking spaces are provided with replenishment means 15, 16, 17, which are not shown in detail, and which serve to accumulate printed products from standing stacks of standing stacked printed product stacks 18, 19, 20 in a shingled stream, and these stacks are always against a not shown and in the saddle stitcher 11 to push the built-in separating and feeding device. Such replenishers are described in detail, for example, in US Pat. No. 3,700,232 or in DE-OS-2421-271, IPC B41f, 13/70. Each of these replenishment means 15, 16, 17 has an individual drive. This is shown schematically in FIG. 1, where an electric motor 21 is shown for the replenishment means 17, which drives the not shown, movable elements of the replenishment means 17 via a chain drive 22, which is only indicated schematically. It is only important that one link of the chain countershaft 22, for example a toothed wheel 23 ', is accessible from the side of the replenishing means 17 facing away from the saddle stitcher 11. What has been explained in relation to the replenishment means 17 also applies to the other replenishment means.

To each of the replenishment means 15 to 17 and thus to each stacking space 12 to 14, a movable and yet to be described with reference to FIGS. 3 and 4 winding frame can be connected, approximately as a ferry is docked with its bow to a pier. The three winding frames 23, 24, 25 are shown in FIG. 2, wherein the winding frame 24 is about to be docked onto the stacking space 13 ', while the winding frames 23, 25 in FIG closed state are shown.

The winding frames 23 to 25 serve for the interchangeable reception of printed product windings W and are provided with drive and conveying means 26 which are only indicated in FIG. 1 and which serve to drive the relevant winding W in the unwinding direction and to supply the printed products resulting from the winding to convey a delivery point 27 (see FIG. 1) at the same height as and when the winding frame is docked directly in front of the inlet area of the replenishment means of the stacking spaces.

The drive and conveying means are driven by a chain gear 28 which is permanently mounted in the winding frame itself and initially only shown schematically in FIG. 1, the first link of which is formed by a gear wheel 29 which is freely accessible on the same side of the winding frame in question as its delivery point 27 and is arranged at the same height as the gear 23 '. Therefore, when the winding frame is docked, the gear 29 engages in a form-fitting manner in the gear 23 'driven by the electric motor 21. This not only has the advantage that the speed at which the drive and conveying means work is matched to that of the assigned replenishment means, but also that the winding frames do not require their own active drive. The speed of the motor 21 is expediently adjustable so that it can be adapted to the working speed and the need of the saddle stitcher. The inlet areas of the replenishment means 15 to 17 are flanked by a pair of guide columns 30, which precisely define its position in the longitudinal direction of the saddle stitcher when a winding frame is approached and thus the respective delivery point 27 according to the replenishment means in question, as well as the gears 29, 23 'in relation to one another align.

Its base plate 32, supported on rollers 31 on the floor, bears a box frame 33, which is shown essentially only in its outline. In its upper region, a bearing 34, indicated only by a circle, is mounted on the box frame, in which a winding W is interchangeable its winding core 35 can be placed in such a way that the winding W is in principle freely rotatable.

The gear 29 can also be seen, on the shaft of which a crank 36 (indicated by dashed lines) to be operated by hand from the side facing the viewer sits or can be plugged on.

The drive connections originating from the gear wheel 29 are drawn in with solid triple lines for the sake of simplicity. First, the first drive connection 37 leads to a deflection roller 38 which is rotatable on a shaft 39. The shaft 39 is also the pivot point of a rocker 40, in which - as will be described later - a system of conveyor belts is mounted. The rocker 40 is supported on the base plate 32 via a gas spring 41. The gas spring 41 is dimensioned such that it can just overcome the weight of the rocker 40 articulated at 39 and the parts mounted therein. From the deflection roller 38 there is a drive connection 42 to a deflection roller 43 and a drive connection 44 to a capstan roller 45 which interacts with two pressure rollers. From here, a drive connection 47 provided with a slip clutch 46 leads to a winding mandrel 48 which receives a coil 49 for the already used at the beginning in connection with the term “winding tape 50.

Das Wickelband 50 führt dann über Umlenkrollen 58 um die Capstanrolle 45 auf die Wickelbandspule 49.The deflection roller 43 is wrapped around by a conveyor belt 51, which leads to the circumference of the winding W, then around a larger deflection roller 52 and then in a stretched zigzag course determined by freely rotatable guide rollers 53 on the top of the deflection roller 38 and leads back to the deflection roller 43 . The deflection roller 38 is wrapped in a conveyor belt 54, which first leads around three freely rotatable deflection rollers 55, then wraps around the larger deflection roller 52 in the same direction as the conveyor belt 51 and then runs back to the deflection roller 38 in the same elongated zigzag course determined by the guide rollers 53. Where the two conveyor belts 51 and 54 have a common course, namely around part of the deflecting roller 52 and then in the mentioned zigzag course, they delimit a conveying gap 56 which stops at the deflecting roller 38. This is also the already mentioned delivery point 27 of the winding frame. Furthermore, a freely rotatable take-off roller 57 is mounted in the rocker 40 directly in front of the deflecting roller 52, which peels the already mentioned winding tape 50 from the winding W. The winding tape 50 then leads over deflection rollers 58 around the capstan roller 45 onto the winding tape reel 49.

From what has been said, it can be seen that as soon as the shaft of the gearwheel 29 is driven (either via this or via the crank 36), the capstan roller 45 and the two conveyor belts 51 and 54 are driven in the direction of the arrows. The capstan roller 45 pulls the winding tape 50 off the winding W and thus sets the latter in a clockwise direction (unwinding direction) in rotation (arrow 59). The thereby released print products D are taken up by the conveyor gap 56 between the conveyor belts 51 and 54 and conveyed to the delivery point 27.

In the course of the removal of printed products, the diameter of the winding W gradually becomes smaller. The gas spring 41 ensures that the rocker 40 is raised accordingly, so that the conveyor belt 51 and the take-off roller 57 always remain in contact with the circumference of the roll W. However, the delivery point 27 always remains at the same level.

An empty winding frame is shown in FIG. 4. The rocker 40 bears against the now empty bearing 34 under the action of the spring 41. To load the winding frame shown in FIG. 4, it is sufficient to pivot the rocker down and then a full winding with its winding core. by means of a suitable lifting device from the direction of the viewer onto the bearing 34 and also an empty winding tape reel onto the winding mandrel 48. The excess length of the winding tape present on the circumference of the full roll is then released, around the take-off roll 57 and the deflection rolls 58 and around the capstan roll 45 up to the attached winding tape reel. The shaft of the gear 29 is then rotated, for example by hand. The excess length of the winding tape is wound up and the winding is thereby set in rotation. The conveyor belts 51 and 54 also run, but the conveyor gap between them will only receive printed products for further transport when the last turn of the winding belt still on the circumference of the winding belt begins to be unwound. The shaft of the gear wheel 29 is then rotated further until the first printed product has passed through the conveying gap 56 (FIG. 3) and appears practically at the delivery point 27, ie above the deflection roller 38. The winding frame is now ready to be connected to one of the stacking spaces (FIG. 2).

The device expediently has more winding frames than there are stacking spaces in operation, preferably twice as many. Then, in each case, a winding frame is connected to the assigned stacking space, and a correspondingly empty winding frame can be provided with a new, full winding, even at a spatially separate location, and can then be moved close to its future place of use. The time it takes to replace a winding that has become empty on a stacking space with its frame by a new frame that is provided with a full winding is so short and in any case not sufficient to compensate for that in the stacks 18, 19 and 20, respectively use up existing stock of printed products. The continuous operation of the saddle stitcher 11 or more generally the processing line is thus guaranteed.

It should be noted that the capacity of a roll W can easily be ten to twenty times or more compared to that of one of the stacking spaces 12 to 14, so that there is sufficient time for few operating personnel to supply a large number of stacking spaces . Another advantage of the device is that the winding frames can be moved, which means that the loading of the winding frames with full windings can take place locally.

The rollers 31 can be locked and / or designed as steering rollers. Likewise, quick couplings, not shown, can be provided between the housings of the replenishment mechanisms on the one hand and the winding frames on the other hand, in order to lock the latter in the connected position.
