Description

The invention relates to a method for producing tear lines in metal sheets, in particular for producing tear-open lids for cans or similar containers, in which the sheet is placed on an anvil type abutment and by sinking the embossing or scoring edge of a stamping tool corresponding to the course of the tear line a scribe line is generated at a predetermined penetration depth.

The production of such scoring lines for tear-open covers is known as long as there are such tear-open covers in which the cover plate can be torn partially or completely along a line of weakness determined by the tear line, preferably with the aid of a part arranged firmly on the tear-open part, such as a handle tab or the like .

Various forms of embossing tool and abutment have been proposed for producing the tear lines (see US Pat. Nos. 3,359,773, 2,061,697 and 2,406,306 and 2,005,568). The course of the weakening line corresponds to the outline of the tearing part. The line of weakness can be closed in itself, so that the tear-open section of the sheet is completely removed from the other sheet metal parts of the can when opened. The tear line can also have an interruption point, e.g. serves to ensure that when opening the container the tear-open part can be torn open to expose the opening, but is permanently connected to the can via the break point of the tear line. The main purpose of this measure is to ensure that the tear-open lid with its sharp tear-open edge, together with the empty container, reaches a waste collection point.

In many cases, the tear-open cover has a more complicated geometric outline shape, the tear line passing through relatively narrow radii of curvature.

In all known cases, such a tear line is produced with a uniform embossing tool in a single work step by embossing cracks. For this purpose, the sheet is placed on the anvil part and the embossing tool is lowered so far that the embossing edge provided on the embossing tool and corresponding to the length and the course of the scoring line has penetrated into the sheet to a predetermined depth of sheet thickness.

Experience has shown that difficulties arise in the production of scoring lines with the known embossing tools if the scoring line is curved around relatively sharp corners with a very narrow radius of curvature. This means that when tear-open lids with a tear-open area are produced, the score line delimiting the tear-open runs curved in all areas of its length and also has a sufficient radius of curvature everywhere, even if this can be relatively small. The depth of penetration of the embossed edge can be different at different areas of the scoring line.

However, there are also cases in which, at least in certain areas, a non-circular course or an abrupt change in direction of the tear line is desirable in order to achieve certain functions and opening processes.

It is an object of the invention to further develop a method of the type described in the introduction in such a way that the limitations and difficulties shown are eliminated and the method can be designed to be considerably more versatile with regard to the geometry and the course of the scribe lines.

According to the invention, this object is achieved by the teaching of claim 1.

Thus, by introducing two or more than two scoring lines with the help of two or more than two tools in two successive work steps, an infinite number of outline shapes can be created for the tear opening, which at least in places have a non-circular or discontinuous course, the rest of the usual machines and Procedures can be used.

In a modification of this procedure, a single scoring tool with only a limited length of the embossing line corresponding to the scoring line can be used and can be brought into effect in two or more successive steps in mutually offset positions. Again in such a way that the individual scribe line sections overlap in the sheet when this appears to be indicated.

To carry out the method, the invention provides an arrangement with an anvil-like abutment and an embossing tool which has an embossing or scoring edge, this arrangement being further developed in accordance with the invention according to the teaching of claim 2. Instead, a single embossing tool can be provided with an embossing or scoring edge of limited length, which can be brought into effect on the sheet in predetermined, differing positions and in a predetermined sequence, such that the two or more scoring lines become sharp at their connection points bump or cross at an angle.

Advantageously, the embossing or scoring edge of each part of the embossing tool can have an approximately circular arc shape, the embossing or scoring edges of the parts of the embossing tool having a different radius of curvature.

Because of this design, it is possible to achieve such a sharp change in direction at certain points on the scoring line that the adjacent scoring line sections enclose a very small angle with one another without requiring a radius of curvature at the tip of this angle.

Further features of the invention result in connection with the following description.

The invention is explained in more detail with reference to schematic drawings using several exemplary embodiments.

Although the tool or the cross section of the embossed edge and the associated anvil part can be formed in one of the different known forms, for the purpose of explanation the scribing tool is shown in a form which basically corresponds to the scribing tool of DE-A-2 406 306 mentioned at the beginning corresponds.

Fig. 2). In the new arrangement, the scoring tool is made in several parts. 1 and 2 only a part of the scribing or embossing tool is shown. This part is designated by 2. The associated embossed edge is designated 5 (see FIG. 2). In Fig. 1, a part of the anvil 3 is shown in cross section and detail, on which the sheet 1 is placed before the embossing tool 2 is lowered. The lowering takes place in relation to the anvil 3 to a predetermined approximation, which at the same time determines the depth of penetration of the embossed edge 5 into the sheet 1. In the example shown, the embossed edge has two inclined flanks 6 which have two flats 7 and 8 located at different heights, which are connected to one another via an inclined shoulder.

This itself is not enough to delimit a tear-in or tear-out part. Rather, several stamping tool parts, each with a limited stamping edge according to FIG. 2, are required. The essential thing is that these embossing tool parts are provided in a predetermined relative geometric arrangement to one another and act on the sheet metal one after the other. As a result, not only can a relatively acute-angled mutual course between adjacent sections of the scoring line be produced, but above all it can be achieved that these scoring line sections intersect slightly at their connection points, as shown by various exemplary embodiments according to FIGS. 3-7. In these figures, the size of the crossover is exaggerated, since it is usually sufficient for the scoring line sections to cross so far that a direct connection of the scoring lines to one another is reliably ensured. The score lines can also butt against one another at the apex of the angle enclosed by them, as is shown at 19 in FIG. 5.

In Fig. 3, a composite scribe line 14 is provided in addition to a simple scribe line in a sheet. This consists of the scribe line sections 15 and 16, both of which have an approximately circular arc shape, the arches, however, showing different radii of curvature. The length and arrangement is such that the two scribe line sections 15 and 16 intersect slightly at the adjoining points as at 17.

According to FIG. 4, an approximately triangular tear-open point in the sheet metal is limited in this way, the sides of which are curved. Pages 11 to 13 are manufactured in succession with different embossing tool parts, so that intersection points 10 again result here.

With the same design and curvature and length of the scoring edges for producing the scoring lines 11 to 13, a single embossing tool can also be provided which has an embossing edge for producing one of the scoring lines 11 to 13. This embossing tool is arranged in such a way that it can be brought into different positions one after the other and can thus be used one after the other to generate the different scoring lines 11 to 13.

According to FIG. 5, a tear-open part 18 is shown by two identical scoring lines in the form of a circular-purpose corner with butt joints 19.

With the new multi-part embossing tool, not only closed tear-open parts according to FIGS. 3-5 can be produced, but also open-ended tear parts as shown at 20 in FIG. 6. Here, too, there is a crossing of two embossing lines or scoring lines of different inclinations at 21 and an interruption point of the scoring line at 30.

Another geometric shape of a tear-open area with four curved side edges 26 to 29 is shown at 25 in FIG. 7. Here, too, the adjacent scoring line sections intersect at a sharp angle, the scoring lines preferably crossing at these points, as shown.

The new process is equally suitable for sheet metal of any kind, i.e. for aluminum sheet or steel sheet.
