Abstract

The invention relates to the fitting of a metal closure on a vessel of which the circular edge is a rigid beaded lip. The method of this invention starts with a closure blank (1) of which the edge (14) has been bent through less than 180 DEG , a thick elastic gasket (5) is positioned inside its support section (20), and then, when the closure blank (1) has been positioned under a centering press (7), it is shaped, it is fitted under the beaded lip (4) of the vessel and it is sealingly tightened in a single operation, by the movement of an annular mandrel (10) or several outer tools of the same function.

Description

The field of the invention is the mechanical working of metals and more particularly the shaping of the edges of a metal cover.

  • - utilisation d'une ébauche de couvercle de diamètre réduit, pour l'économie de métal;
The essential object of the invention is a method of tightly crimping a metal cover onto a container with a swollen circular edge, meeting two conditions with a view to application to continuous canning manufacture:
  • - use of a blank cover of reduced diameter, to save metal;
  • - simple and quick crimping process, if possible in a single operation.

The sealed closure of a container, the edge of which is constituted by a rigid ring having a bulge, by a metal cover is most often carried out by a succession of mechanical operations, the last of which is pushing back the skirt of the cover beforehand. folded back into the groove of the ring in order to obtain a lasting attachment with a tightening effect. This pushing is done laterally for example using one or more knobs.

In a different and simpler way, US-A-3,190,481 describes the crimping of a cover blank having a central hollow coming to be housed in the orifice of a glass container, this blank having a shaped outer edge. in a U that a pressing tool with a radiated interior shape gradually deforms so that the U-shaped edge tips under the bulged edge of the container, thus carrying out the crimping.

Pair Elsewhere, the patent GB-A-891,341 describes the crimping of a blank cover, having on its periphery a groove whose outer skirt ends with an outwardly rolled edge carrying spaced narrow slots, on a container having a rolled outer rim, when this cover blank is disposed on the container its groove overlaps the outer rim of this container. The annular tool of the crimping machine has a radiated interior shape which allows the gripping of the blank cover by its rolled edge. The descent of this annular tool produces the tightening of the outer skirt of the cover blank around the outer rim of the container, tightening accompanied by the crimping of the rolled end edge of this skirt under this outer rim, thanks to the action of the vertical surface of the annular tool, which overcomes its radiated interior shape.

In these methods, the cover blank includes a shaped or rolled outer edge for crimping which uses a relatively large amount of metal or material and is an economic handicap.

The invention relates to a sealed crimping process for a cover in which the crimping is carried out in a single operation by translation of one or more shaped tools and in which the extreme edge of the cover blank has been hemmed, but much more limited than in the two patents cited above and for a different purpose. An essential objective of the invention is the saving of material and the method of the invention uses a blank cover surface just sufficient to allow the attachment under the ring of the container of the end of the edge of the cover, without that there is excess metal in the form of a rolled edge or a folded edge. The extreme edge of the blank of the cover of the invention is hemmed over 100 ° to 140 °, and it has a double role: it serves as a primer side for the deformation of the periphery of the blank, and the other side, towards its end, of primer for hanging the cover under the bulged ring of the container. The complex deformation of the periphery of the blank, leading to its crimping under the bulged ring of the container and to its tightening on this ring, is made by a special annular mandrel, or by several external mandrels of the same function as this annular mandrel.

While in the processes of patents US-A-3,190,481 and GB-A-891,341, the edge of the U shaped blank or rolled blank is tilted or folded and then pushed back under the bulged edge of the container, the deformation mechanism complex of the edge of the cover blank in the method of the invention consists of a drawing accompanied by a tightening and ending with a hooping, having the overall effect of the tight crimping of the cover. In the method of the invention, the edge is thus unfolded and crimped without unrolling or tilting it.

In more detail, the subject of the invention is a method of crimping a metal cover onto a container, the edge of which comprises a rigid ring having a bulge, by means of a crimping device comprising a presser-centering device and an annular mandrel. comprising in particular an inclined radiated interior shape and a vertical interior surface, or else several exterior shaped mandrels, this process typically comprising the following steps:
  • a) a cover blank is prepared comprising a hollow central part with an approximately frustoconical side wall and a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the orifice of the container, and an annular part comprising successively: an annular bearing zone , an inclined intermediate zone and an extreme concavity edge facing inwards and hemmed over 100 to 140 °,
  • b) a continuous thick elastic seal is deposited inside the support area of the cover blank (on the reverse side of this area) or on the rim of the container,
  • c) the cover blank is placed under the presser-centering device of the crimping device and the container is placed below the cover blank. It is not possible to center the container precisely at this time, a surprising self-centering effect of the container manifesting itself at the start of the deformation of the cover blank by the annular mandrel if then the bearing force of the presser-centering device is still weak, that is to say if the thick elastic seal is slightly crushed,
  • d) the cover blank is gradually brought to bear on the rim of the container by means of the thick elastic seal inserted between said cover blank and said rim, using the presser-centering device, until a force d '' selected value support,
  • e) during and after step d), it is deformed, crimped and a tight tightening of the cover blank is made on the ring of the container, by means of the only annular mandrel, or of the only external mandrels of shape, according to the following deformation process:
    • e1) stretching, pushing down and tightening the hemmed end edge and the intermediate zone of the cover blank, by pressing the annular mandrel, or external shaped mandrels, on said hemmed end edge, and by rolling of said border in the inclined radiated inner shape of the annular mandrel or in the shapes of the outer mandrels.
    • e2) this deformation of the extreme edge and of the intermediate zone of the cover blank is continued, and the same is pushed back under the bulged ring of the container, by pressing the connection surface surmounting the radiated inner inclined shape of the annular mandrel and by engagement of the vertical interior surface of said annular mandrel around said extreme edge and intermediate zone, or else by support and by engagement of the shapes and vertical interior surfaces of the exterior shape mandrels,
    • e3) the tight tightening of the cover is completed on the swollen ring of the container, shrinking it by sliding from the vertical internal surface of the annular mandrel, or from the vertical internal surfaces of the external shaped mandrels, around the external edge of the lid. at least up to the level of the underside of the bulging ring of the container.

In a preferred form of the invention, this crimping is carried out in a single operation by translation of an annular mandrel of particular shape parallel to the common axis of symmetry of the edge of the container and of the cover. With regard to conventional shaping processes, it can be said that this crimping essentially combines a stamping process without a blank holder for the blank of the cover by the punch which constitutes the rigid ring of the container and the matrix which constitutes the annular mandrel, and a process of rolling the metal in a groove of the mandrel, rolling itself thwarted by the outside of the ring of the container.

A non-limiting example of a container, the edge of which comprises a rigid ring having a bulge, an example corresponding to a glass jar, will make it possible to better describe the invention and to specify certain details thereof.

The drawings which illustrate this example are as follows:
  • Figure 1 shows a blank metal cover, for example aluminum, in axial half-section.
  • Figure 2 shows in axial half-section the edge of the same cover blank in the crimping start position on the rigid edge of a glass jar.
  • Figure 3 shows in axial half-section the cover during crimping during the rolling phase.

In FIG. 1, it can be seen that the cover blank 1 has been pre-curled according to known methods, so as to allow, on the one hand, easy unstacking, on the other hand, the initiation of the deformation process and crimping. This cover blank 1 comprises a hollow central part 2 and an annular edge 3 which will overlap the rigid swollen ring of the stopper container as shown in FIG. 2. The annular part itself successively comprises: an annular zone of support 20, an inclined intermediate zone 18 and an extreme edge 14 of concavity turned inwardly hemmed over approximately 120 °. The extreme edge 14 has, moreover, in cross section a small radius r 2 (FIG. 2) so that it cannot become embedded on the outside of the ring 4 of the container and that it comes to hang on under the ring 4 only after deformation of the periphery 14 and 18 of the cover blank 1 by the annular mandrel.

In Figure 2, we can see the cover blank 1 in position for crimping. An elastic annular seal 5 is placed on the upper or "drinking" end 6 of the ring 4 and is interposed between this ring 4 and the edge 3 of the cover, while a presser-centering device 7 presses the cover 1 and maintains it relative to the ring 4 of the jar thanks to the cooperation of the periphery of its stud 8 with the roughly frustoconical periphery 9 of the hollow central part 2 of said cover. An annular mandrel 10 having a vertical translational travel controlled by an elastic cylinder surrounds the presser-centering device 7 with a small clearance, the presser-centering device also serving to ensure the centering of this mandrel 10 relative to the ring 4 of the jar. While the outside 11, 12, 13 of the edge of the ring 4 can be inscribed in a circle of radius r l , the internal radius r 2 of the extreme edge 14 of the cover is significantly smaller than r, and the radius R of the shape 15 of the annular mandrel 10 is greater than r i . The shape 15 of the mandrel is connected with a radius r 3 to a lower part and with a radius r 4 to the vertical central orifice 16. The working parts of the mandrel, namely the shape 15 and its connections of radius r 3 and r 4 as well as the bottom of the central orifice 16 have a surface condition and a hardness suitable for the rolling and crimping work of the metal cover, in this case aluminum.

The cover 1 thus being in place in the crimping device, between the ring 4 of the glass jar surmounted by the seal 5 and the presser-centering device 7 surrounded by the movable annular mandrel 10, the crimping work begins with a first rolling phase (FIG. 3) in which the annular mandrel 10 descending vertically as indicated by the arrow progressively makes contact first by the arrangement of radius r 3 with the end edge 14 of the cover, then by the shape 15 of radius R with the part of the cover 18 immediately contiguous to this border 14 and returns them downwards and under the lower part of the ring by a rolling effect in the peripheral shape 15 inclined and radiated along the radius R. Surprisingly, a self-centering of the container under the cover 1 was done at the beginning of the deformation of said cover, under the effect of the spontaneous balancing of the efforts to maintain this cover by the annular mandrel. This self-centering effect facilitates the implementation of the method.

This surprising self-centering effect makes it possible not to center the container with precision along the vertical axis of symmetry of the presser-centering device and the cover blank, for example better than 0.3 to 0.5 mm per relation to this axis. When the jar is off-center and when the bearing force of the cover blank 1 on the ring 4 of the container is still low, for example less than a quarter of the maximum bearing force chosen, the annular mandrel 10 comes into asymmetrical support on the periphery 14 of the cover blank 1 and it seems that the transmission of asymmetrical support forces to the ring 4 of the container via the inclined intermediate zone 18 and the elastic seal 5 is sufficient to drive the container aside, until the support forces corresponding to the precise centering of the container have been balanced. This self-centering effect, linked to the progressive intervention of the press-centering device at the start of the action of the annular mandrel, is an important advantage of the process, particularly in the case of glass containers.

Le mandrin annulaire 10 poursuivant sa descente (figure 4), la zone de raccordement de rayon r4 puis la surface verticale 16 de l'orifice central du mandrin 10 continuent d'exercer un effet de repoussage du matériau du couvercle sous la partie inférieure de la bague, et exercent, en outre, un effet de serrage de la partie précédemment roulée 14 et de la partie immédiatement contiguë 18.The annular mandrel 10 continuing its descent (FIG. 4), the connection area of radius r 4 then the vertical surface 16 of the central orifice of the mandrel 10 continue to exert an effect of pushing back the material of the cover under the lower part of the ring, and also exert a clamping effect on the previously rolled part 14 and on the immediately contiguous part 18.

When the descent of the annular mandrel 10 is complete (FIG. 5), the periphery of the lid 1 has been hooped on the ring 4 of the container by the sliding of the internal vertical surface 16 on the edge 14 and 18 of the lid 1 applied on the periphery of the swollen ring 4, sliding continued until the vertical surface 16 reaches a level below the bottom of the ring 4. While completing the tightening of the edge 14 and 18 of the cover 1, the internal surface 16 of the annular mandrel 10 pushed the end 19 of the end edge 14 of the cover. The tensioning of the cover as well as the action of the presser-centering device 7 resulted in a progressive crushing of the seal 5 by the upper part 20 of the edge of the cover. The progressive descent of the centralizing presser 7 during the downward translation of the mandrel 10 can be either mechanically controlled, or more simply be done under its own weight, the centralizing presser 7 now in constant support the seal 5 which is gradually compressed by the tension due to the deformation of the edge of the cover.

By way of example, the blank cover 1 is shaped from a sheet or strip of aluminum alloy 5052 according to the specification of the Aluminum Association, of thickness between 0.2 and 0.4 mm and of hardness H22 to H28 according to standard NFA02-006, and the initial thickness of the seal 5 is between 0.6 and 1 mm. Typically, in the case of a glass jar, the outside of the edge of the jar of the jar fits in a cross section in a circle of radius r, between 2 and 5 mm, the extreme edge 14 of the lid 1 is pre-hemmed with a radius r 2 between 1.5 and 4mm and the shape 15 of the annular mandrel is radiated according to a radius (R) between 3 and 8 mm and its axis of symmetry in cross section, shown in the Figure 4, makes an angle between 30 ° and 60 ° with the common axis of symmetry of the edge of the container and the lid, axis coincides with the axis of symmetry of revolution of the annular mandrel 10 in the case of the example. The end 19 of the end edge 14 of the cover can be located in the radiated part along the internal radius r 2 or be a non-conforming extra length of this radiated part. The outside diameter of the centralizing presser 7 is typically equal to or slightly greater by 0.5 to 1.5 mm than the outside diameter of the ring 4 of the container (diameter at point 12 in the case of FIG. 2) and the mandrel 10 slides at low clearance - less than 0.2 mm - around the centering presser 7. The edge of the cover 18, 14, 19 preferably has no discontinuities in form or shape.

    avec des ébauches de couvercle en alliage d'aluminium 5052 demi-dur, d'épaisseur 0,25 mm préparées comme suit à partir de flans ébauches circulaires de diamètre 94mm:
  • - partie centrale en creux de profondeur 3 mm et de pourtour tronconique de diamètre à mi- hauteur 71,5mm, avec un angle de génératrice par rapport à la direction de l'axe égal à 8° environ;
  • - diamètre extérieur de l'ébauche 86 mm, avec une bordure extrême (4) ourlée sur 120° selon un rayon intérieur (rz) de 2 mm, et un diamètre intérieur de passage sur l'extrémité libre (19) de 83mm;
The writing process was thus applied to cylindrical glass jars having the following dimensions:
  • - hole diameter: 72.5 mm
  • - outer diameter of the jar body: 78.5 mm
  • - outside diameter on the swollen ring of the edge: 82.5mm
  • - ring height: 3 mm
    with cover blanks of semi-hard 5052 aluminum alloy, 0.25 mm thick prepared as follows from circular blank blanks with a diameter of 94mm:
  • - hollow central part with a depth of 3 mm and a frustoconical perimeter of diameter at mid-height 71.5 mm, with a generator angle relative to the direction of the axis equal to approximately 8 °;
  • - outside diameter of the blank 86 mm, with an extreme edge (4) hemmed over 120 ° according to an inside radius (r z ) of 2 mm, and an inside passage diameter on the free end (19) of 83 mm;
  • - compressible elastic seal of thickness 0.7 to 0.8 mm applied by spraying inside the bearing surface (20).

The central presser 7 had a centering pin 8 with a diameter of 71.5 mm and a height of 1.5 mm, and its outside diameter was 83.5 mm. The annular mandrel 10 had a vertical interior surface 16 of diameter 83.6 mm, sliding freely around the presser-centering device which thus served not only to center the blank of cover 1 but also the annular mandrel 10 during its translational movement .

The pressure was applied by the same head: on the presser-centering device by means of a spring, and on the annular mandrel. At the start of the operation, a precise refocusing effect of the container was observed, improving the initial centering from 0.3 to 0.4 mm. The effort was limited to 45 kg on the presser-centering device, the maximum effort recorded for the entire presser-centering device (elastic support) and the annular mandrel (crimping work) was 100 to 110 kg for a series of fifteen jars.

When it comes to the vacuum tight closure of preserving jars with injection of water vapor and condensation of this vapor, it is important not to release the pressing pressure of the lid too suddenly, so as to allow decompression of the thick elastic seal and to avoid air intake. The elastic support of the presser-centering device is therefore preferable, both to promote precise self-centering of the container and to avoid the return of air at the end of the crimping operation.

The following general details can still be added, in particular following the tests:
  • 1 °) the cover blank should preferably have a hollow central part with a depth of between 1.5 and 4mm, of essentially frustoconical periphery whose generatrices in axial section make an angle of 5 to 10 ° with the direction of the axis, of diameter that of the orifice of the container.

The inclined intermediate zone 18 succeeding the support zone 20 typically makes an angle of 30 to 60 ° with the direction of the axis. The extreme edge 14 following this intermediate zone 18 preferably has an internal radius r 2 of between 0.5 times and 0.8 times the envelope radius r, of the external contour of the bulged edge of the ring 4 of the container in axial section.

Le diamètre extérieur hors-tout de l'ébauche de couvercle 1, diamètre correspondant à sa bordure extrême 14, a une valeur typiquement égale au diamètre extérieur de la bague renflée 4 du récipient augmentée de 0,8 fois à 1,3 fois la hauteur de cette bague 4. Enfin, le procédé peut être exécuté avec une ébauche de couvercle de surface réduite, sa partie annulaire 3 ou encore 20 et 18 et 14 ayant en demi-section axiale une longueur développée comprise entre 0,9 fois et 1,2 fois la longueur développée totale du buvant 6 et du contour latéral et inférieur de la bague renflée 4 du récipient. Le joint élastique épais, d'épaisseur typiquement comprise entre 0,6 et 1 mm, peut être réalisé, par exemple, en un plastisol de chlorure de polyvinyle plastifié, et appliqué par coulée, par projection ou simplement déposé et éventuellement collé, comme cela est habituel et connu;The overall outside diameter of the cover blank 1, the diameter corresponding to its extreme edge 14, has a value typically equal to the outside diameter of the bulged ring 4 of the container increased by 0.8 times to 1.3 times the height of this ring 4. Finally, the process can be carried out with a blank cover of reduced surface area, its annular part 3 or else 20 and 18 and 14 having in axial half-section a developed length of between 0.9 times and 1, 2 times the total developed length of the rim 6 and of the lateral and lower contour of the bulged ring 4 of the container. The thick elastic seal, typically between 0.6 and 1 mm thick, can be made, for example, of a plasticized polyvinyl chloride plastisol, and applied by casting, by spraying or simply deposited and possibly bonded, like this is usual and known;

  • - le presseur-centreur 7 qui fixe le centrage de l'ébauche de couvercle 1 porte au centre de sa surface d'appui sur la zone d'appui 20 de l'ébauche de couvercle 1 un téton de centrage 8 de hauteur inférieure à la profondeur de la partie centrale en creux 2 de ladite ébauche 1 et de diamètre tel qu'il coopère avec la paroi latérale tronconique 9 de la partie centrale en creux 2 par un léger encastrement;
  • - on utilise de préférence un mandrin annulaire 10, dont la forme périphérique inclinée 15 a un rayon R compris entre 1,5 fois et 2,5 fois le rayon enveloppe ri du contour extérieur du bord renflé de la bague 4 du récipient en section axiale. La surface intérieure verticale 16 du mandrin 10 doit avoir perpendiculairement à son axe de symétrie de révolution un diamètre égal au diamètre maximal de la bague renflée 4 du récipient augmenté du double de l'épaisseur de l'ébauche de couvercle 1 et de 0,05 à 0,2 mm. La forme inclinée rayonnée 15 est comprise entre une surface de raccordement à la partie inférieure du manchon annulaire 10, surface de rayon r3 en coupe axiale, et une surface de raccordement avec la surface intérieure verticale 16 du rayon r4: de façon que le début de la déformation de l'ébauche de couvercle se fasse correctement, il faut que le bas de la forme rayonnée 15, correspondant à la jonction de la zone de surface de raccordement de rayon r3 et de cette forme 15, ait perpendiculairement à l'axe de symétrie du dispositif, un diamètre de préférence compris entre le diamètre extérieur de l'ébauche de couvercle 1 moins deux fois le rayon intérieur r2 et ce même diamètre de l'ébauche 1 moins 0,5 fois r2;
2) the tools should preferably have the following characteristics:
  • the centralizing presser 7 which fixes the centering of the cover blank 1 carries in the center of its bearing surface on the bearing area 20 of the cover blank 1 a centering pin 8 of height less than the depth of the hollow central part 2 of said blank 1 and of diameter such that it cooperates with the frustoconical side wall 9 of the hollow central part 2 by a slight embedding;
  • - An annular mandrel 10 is preferably used, whose inclined peripheral shape 15 has a radius R of between 1.5 times and 2.5 times the envelope radius r i of the outer contour of the bulged edge of the ring 4 of the container in section axial. The vertical internal surface 16 of the mandrel 10 must have, perpendicular to its axis of symmetry of revolution, a diameter equal to the maximum diameter of the swollen ring 4 of the container increased by twice the thickness of the cover blank 1 and by 0.05 0.2 mm. The radiated inclined shape 15 is comprised between a connection surface at the lower part of the annular sleeve 10, surface of radius r 3 in axial section, and a connection surface with the vertical interior surface 16 of radius r 4 : so that the beginning of the deformation of the cover blank is done correctly, the bottom of the radiated shape 15, corresponding to the junction of the connection surface area of radius r 3 and this shape 15, must be perpendicular to the 'axis of symmetry of the device, a diameter preferably between the outside diameter of the cover blank 1 minus twice the interior radius r 2 and the same diameter of the blank 1 minus 0.5 times r 2 ;
  • the annular mandrel 16 must slide with a slight clearance around the presser-centering device 7 to ensure its centering with respect to the cover blank 1.

The method can optionally be applied with, instead of an annular mandrel, several mandrels coming into contact simultaneously or successively with several parts of the periphery of the outer edge of the cover.

This process is particularly useful for canning food or pharmaceuticals in glass jars. It also applies to the crimping of a lid on any other container having a bulged edge and sufficiently rigid. Conveniently for the user, the cover may be an easy-opening cover, for example for preserves intended to be used from the first opening, or for preserves for successive uses, the jar then being provided with an over-cover for successive fillings.

The invention typically applies to glass jars whose orifice has a diameter between 50 and 110 mm.

Claims (10)

1. A process for cimping a metal cover to a container whose circular edge comprises an enlarged rigid ring (4), by means of a crimping apparatus comprising a pressing-centering means (7) and an annular mandrel (10) comprising in particular an inclined radiused internal shape (15) and a vertical internal surface (16) or a plurality of external shaping mandrels, comprising the following steps:
a) preparing a cover blank (1) comprising a central recessed portion (2) with a perceptibly frustoconical side wall (9) and a diameter slightly smaller than the diameter of the orifice of the container, and an annular portion (3) successively comprising: an annular support zone (20), an inclined intermediate zone (18) and an outermost rim portion (14) of inwardly directed concavity, which is turned over at the edge over 100 to 140°;
b) depositing a thick continuous elastic joint (5) within the support zone (20) of the cover blank (1) or on the edge (6) of the container;
c) pacing the cover blank (1) beneath the pressing-centering means (7) of the crimping apparatus, and arranging the container below the cover blank (1), optionally centering the container precisely;
d) progressively bringing the cover blank (1) into a position of bearing against the edge (6) of the container by way of the thick elastic joint (5) which is interposed between said cover blank (1) and said edge (6), by means of the pressing-centering means (7), until a bearing force of selected value is attained;
e) during and after step (d), deforming, crimping and sealingly clamping the cover blank (1) on to the ring (4) of the container, by means of just the annular mandrel (10) or just the external shaping mandrels, in accordance with the following deformation process:
e 1) drawing, pushing downwardly and tightening the outermost turned-over rim portion (14) and the intermediate zone (18) of the cover blank (1), by the annular mandrel (10) or the external shaping mandrels bearing against said outermost turned-over rim portion (14), and by rolling said rim portion in the inclined radiused internal shape (15) of said annular mandrel (10) or in the shapes of said external mandrels;
e2) continuing said deformation of the outermost rim portion (14) and the intermediate zone (18) of the cover blank (1) and at the same time pushing the end (19) of said outermost rim portion (14) under the enlarged ring (4) on the container, by contact with the connecting surface disposed above said inclined radiused internal shape (15) of said annular mandrel (10) and by engagement of the vertical internal surface (16) of said annular mandrel (10) around said outermost rim portion and said intermediate zone (14+ 18) or by contact and engagement with the corresponding surfaces of said external shaping mandrels; and
e3) concluding the operation of sealingly clamping the cover (1) on to the enlarged ring (4) of the container, by tightening it therearound by sliding movement of the vertical internal surface (16) of the annular mandrel (10) or by sliding movement of the vertical internal surfaces of the external shaping mandrels, around the outermost rim portion (14+18) of the cover (1), at least until the bottom of said vertical surface (16) or said vertical surfaces of the external shaping mandrels reaches the level of the underneath of the enlarged ring (4) on the container.
2. A process according to claim 1 characterized in that the outermost rim portion (14) of the cover bank (1) is turned over with, in axial section, an internal radius (r2) which is between 0.5 times and 0.8 times the envelope radius (r,) of the external contour of the enlarged edge of the ring (4) on the container.
3. A process according to claim 2 characterized in that the outside overall diameter of the cover blank (1) is equal to the outside diameter of the rigid enlarged ring (4) on the container, increased by 0.8 times to 1.3 times the height of said ring (4).
4. A process according to claim 2 characterized in that in axial half-section, the developed length of the annular portion (3) or (20+18+14) is between 0.9 times and 1.2 times the total length of the edge (6) and the outside contour of the enlarged portion of the ring (4) of the container.
5. A process according to any one of claims 1 to 4 characterized in that the crimping apparatus comprises an annular mandrel (10) having the following particular features:
- its inclined radiused internal shape (15) is in axial section of a radius (R) of between 1.5 times and 2.5 times the envelope radius (ri) of the outside contour of the enlarged edge of the ring (4) on the container, and an axis of symmetry forming an angle of between 30° and 60° with the common axis of symmetry of the container and the cover; and
- its vertical internal surface (16), perpendicularly to its axis of symmetry of revolution, is of a diameter equal to the maximum diameter of the enlarged ring (4) on the container, increased by twice the thickness of the cover blank (1) and from 0.05 to 0.2 mm.
6. A process according to claim 5 characterized in that the bottom of the radiused internal shape (15), which is defined as the junction of said shape (15) and the lower connecting surface of a radius (r3), is of a diameter between the following, perpendicularly to the axis of symmetry of revolution of the apparatus: the outside diameter of the cover blank (1) less twice the inside radius (r2) of the outermost rim portion (14) of said blank (1) and said same diameter of the blank (1) less 0.5 times said inside radius (r2).
